We're celebrating, my husband's thyroid test came back normal without medication

He had been on meds since 1992 for his thyroid. It was wildly swinging back and forth between making too much and too little. He had two big goiters in 1998. So for him to be able to go months without any thyroid meds and his blood checking out as normal is incredible. His sister's went back to normal after one year, but his has been such a mess for so many years, this seems like a miracle to me. So have you ever had something that you thought would never go away and it did? I had low blood sugar that I caused by eating poorly. My Drs. said I would always have it and then I would have high blood sugar, so then I ate more reasonably and it went back to normal. But that was just a mild problem and it didn't take much to change. My husband's was major, trust me, I've lived through it.

What wonderful news it is that your husband's thyroid problem has straightened out. It's just great to hear when people have health problems that disappear or go away as much of the health news I hear about is not good news. Yes, I was told I had a "fatty liver" but the liver function tests returned to normal after I had an ERCP done (a scope procedure where biliary ducts were cleared out). The dr. said my high liver function tests were due to my biliary duct problems and NOT a fatty liver. That was great news.

That is wonderful that both the Drs. found and relieved the problem as well as you were able to return to normal. Yes, it is great when things return to normal. They're calling it temporary remission of thyroid problems for now, they will check, but it could be permanent. I hope they continue to monitor your bile ducts and that you live long and well. Thanks and take care. I hope people read your response and ask about bile ducts when their liver tests come out abnormal. Thanks and take care

So happy for you and glad to hear this! This is news to me as I have never heard of this before!! My Dad is on thyroid Meds and will be for life...My understanding is that it is dangerous to go off this medication but under the advice of a doctor it must be OK for your hubby to do and truly I am thrilled for you! My Hubby's Step-Mom is also on Thyroid Meds for life...she is more severe than my Dad is and has just recently had her medication changed in hopes that will help her! Again, congratulations on getting this under control as I would call it a real miracle!! ~Heavens~

Hello writersedge, I just 'had to' drop in here, after reading all you've had to say. I am heavenschild's step mom in law, that she's been speaking about here. By the way, she's on her way over for a visit today, as I'm typing this. First of all, congrats to your husband, and I believe you said 'his' sister, on their remission. What a lot your husband's gone through ... how horrible! I'm so happy for him especially. I had no idea that remission was even possible with a thyroid condition. It does give me hope. At the moment, I'm doing battle with it, and have been feeling lousy since last November. I started on my first meds around a year ago this past February, and although 'they' say my levels are good, something changed last November. Prior to that, once I'd had enough of the medication, things settled down, and I was feeling pretty good. Suddenly without warning, something changed in November, and I've been having no end of serious bowel problems, have been so exhausted that I can sleep any time of the day, have developed a very nasty rash, severe leg and muscle cramps, and just generally feel really weird. I finally went and saw my doctor on Thursday, as the rash was out of control, and she 'actually' took a look at it. I've got prescription cream here, as well as an anti-histamine to take at night. I'm also on prescription meds for the bowel problem. She 'would have' left me on the same type and dosage of the thyroid pills, but when I talked to her about the way I'm feeling, she said she'd 'try' changing my meds, and would swing me over more toward the 'hyper' side of things. I have hypothyroidism. I've only been on the new meds for a week, and have to have my blood checked in a couple of months, and then return to my doctor. By the way, she's never offered to send me to a specialist, but I may have to insist on this. I know they're called an 'endocrinologist.' My condition has also affected my eyesight, as this is what my optometrist, and the specialist (surgeon) believe is the cause. I have 'very severe' cataracts on my right eye, and my vision is impaired. I'm quite young to have this condition (they say), and I'll be having corrective surgery for this in April. Cataracts have also started on my left eye, so they're keeping a watch on this. Thanks again, for sharing this here. I wish your husband and his sister continued health, and I do appreciate the encouragement you've given me. Take care.

WOW! Well my husband's Step mom is really bad! She has Hypo-thyroidism (Spelling) with all of the symptoms pretty well when her medication is not in the correct dosage....She gets awful rashes and has swelling of the eyes...severe tiredness and many other problems due to this condition!! My Dad does well on the pill however and has never had the dosage changed...He comes into a problem if he misses a couple days of meds then he is sweaty and feels really ill and is tired so it hits all people differently...To me it is no big deal that my Dad takes a little pill every morning for the rest of his life if he feels better with it...As for My Hubby's Step-Mom I just wish they could get her dosage or pill type right or what ever is wrong with hers as she is really bad again now with the tiredness and feeling so ill and a really bad rash:( ~Heavens~

Both he and his sister are in remission from this problem. I had never heard of it until one by one, they had it happen. If the thyroid is still producing hormone(s), then it is possible, if it quits, then I guess it is not. My husband had Hashimoto's Disease (spelling) and all kinds of problems with it like goiter, so it is like a miracle to me, too. But apparently it is becoming more common all the time for people to go into remission. They've made a lot of headway with Thyroid Gland problems. From 1992 to 2008 is a long time and I thought it would never happen. His sister only had a problem for one year so hers isn't as big a deal. So there is hope for your relatives, too.

Congrats to your husband, and sister in law. I've written a lengthy comment under heavenschild's response, as 'I am' her step mom in law, that she's mentioned here.

Thank you! I really feel honoured that your husband responded to me himself. It means a great deal, to have the support of somebody who's 'been there.' Take care, and have a great day.

Yes, husband and sister-n-law. He responded to you after I responded above. You're the first person he's actually responded to. Normally, I ask him something and he just says tell so-n-so, such and such which is usually one line. So I just type one line. He hates talking to people on the phone or by computer so this is pretty cool. I hope that our responses help you and give you the stength or encouragement to carry on until you get over the rough spots in this condition. I wish someone hold told us all this when we were going through the rough times, they did eventually, but I say, "The earlier, the better."

I am so thrilled for you....and your hubby! So nice not to be tied to that medicine bottle....many, many years ago, I was treated for thyroid, and I was on injections (self-daily)...I was able to sympathize with diabetics...but after 4 years, (not nearly as long as your poor hubby)...I normalled out! Thrilled! My goodness, you had some serious diet issues in order to end up "hypo"...and thoroughly pleased you are taking care of yourself now! Congrats...to both of you! Finished the never ending job...just trying to catch my breath...and my computer has spring fever, it is infected with "slugs"...but only on myLot. Cheers...love good news!

Luckily, my husband was on pills. They had wanted to radiate his thyroid and kill it. I prayed they wouldn't. His eyes are dangerously forward of his head and they decided it was too dangerous a gamble for his eyes. The goiters made it too hard for them to cut it out. So they tried two pills, one for hypo and one for hyper thyroid. They did the same with his sister and it worked for her really well and really fast. But my husband has been on both since 1999. I was beginning to think he would be on meds for life and now this. It's been a long haul, but he and the Drs. did it! Injuctions would be horrible. Glad you've off them. Good that you work is getting done. Yes, sometimes Mylot is really, really slow!

My husband promised that he would at least try on the weekends. With better thyroid, at least his legs don't get cramps or charlie horses like they used to.

Yes, it was quite the effort, esp. when he was wasting away until they got his meds under control. I was waiting on him hand and foot plus praying a lot. Thanks for realizing that the patient, relatives, and doctor all have to work together. Not everyone realizes that. I had to go in with him to the doctor for awhile because he couldn't remember what was being said and have the doctor write it down for us. Thanks for bringing up a very good point, team effort, I hope people read this and learn something from it today.

Thyroid isn't depression. The gland may be depressed in output. Glad your husband is there for you. Depression is hard to deal with, but better when you have friends and/or relatives to talk to. Hope your depression lifts or at least gives you a break, take care and good luck.

That is so true, when my husband was standing by me and the depression it helped alot, but that kind of went to the wayside, but I will talk with him, and make him realize it is not over yet. Thank you and good luck to you and your husband, and to him to kick the depression once and for all.
