Do you eat almond butter?

With the peanut butter scare, I'm wondering if more people are turning to almond butter as an alternative to peanut butter. It certainly speads like peanut butter and has a nice taste of its own, comparable in consistency to peanut butter. But it doesn't taste like peanut butter. And for peanut butter die-hards, it just doesn't quit cut it. So are you a die-hard and have you recently switched to almond butter until the scare is over?

I have used almond butter is specific recipes, but found that the cost was prohibitive to use for other than specialty items! Here, in B.C. it is almost triple the cost of peanut butter, and it just doesn't fit into my budget! I am sure that the cost is reflective of production & processing (not nearly as many growers/processors) so...until it costs peanuts (LOL) it will not be in my fridge!Good discussion on alternatives, tho! Cheers!

I hear ya on that cost! I, like you, don't buy it all that often, for the very reason you stated. But once in a while, I measure out a little from the machine that grinds it, and I take it home for a treat.

Eleven years ago when we got ours, we paid dearly for her. Papered...linage out of England. We let her go 2 years before thinking of breeding, and when we took her to the vet, he found a heart murmur. We had her fixed at 3 years without litters. She also grew 14 and a half inches tall, a bit tall for a Jack Russell. But she is nearly all white but for brown ears. We never persued anything more. She is a bit antisocial with dogs, but she often whines to be with them. We just can't trust her to be civilized. She was the alpha of her litter too. She does love people, unless they ride bikes or skateboards. We have just the one dog. She will probably be the last one. Right now she is loosing teeth and getting some lumps under her coat. She is still chasing shakey toys and jumping up, but the jumping down is more tender for her. And that's the story of our Mollie.

Hey, Jellen....looked your profile, (not that that was necessary--as I enjoy your posts) but you got me from "go" when I saw that one of your interests was Jack Russell Terriers! I have a registered male JRT, was 4 on Dec. 19, and will keep him as is...as would like him to sire a litter.....I absolutely lucked in on him, as a rescue doggy that came with, all lineage, all vet papers...as well as he has a chip! He's a big JRT...and his register name is "Super Bruiser"...but we lovingly call him "Bru". Like his brother's name better "Super Briar"....but he's the light of my life. Was a little bit Alpha when I brought him home, as I have another old love, who is 15 yrs.3 months! Best buddies now! Do you raise JRT's? Have a great weekend!

I have never even heard of almond butter, but I am sure I would like it. As to peanut butter, I am picky, only Peter Pan crunchy!

I've always been afraid of the crunchy ones, ever since I read what was allwed to pass inspection at the plants...some of it crunchy. So I go for the creamy, unsweetened, natural brands. Lately, that's been Adams. Almond butter is usually available in nutrition sections of chain stores or health food stores. Like I said, it's good, but not the same.

We had a bad outbreak of food-related illness connected to peanuts. That is over now, so we can go back to enjoying our peanut butter. Most folks don't know about the standards of peanut butter quality control. But I believe, if more people knew what was allowed to pass inspection and be in our peanut butter jars, a few fewer people might be eating the peanut butter. I only eat the smooth. I like the taste, and if there is something crunchy in my smooth peanut butter, I want to know it. Maybe one day you can try it. It's quite delicious.

I love almond butter. I haven't gotten too scared away from peanut butter. I actually just had some a minute ago. They said most of the jars were safe. But, I did make a quick check of each of the companies website, of the peanut butter I had, to make sure they were not affected. I took a food allergy test awhile back ago and almonds came up as one of my allergens. So, I try to avoid them and not by almond butter. Almonds a bit hard to resist sometimes. I agree that almond butter is good, but it can't really replace peanut butter. Almond butter and chocolate is nice, but peanut butter and chocolate, that is a whole other story :o)

I'm with ya. Chocolate and peanuts are way more exciting I think. But almonds offer some great nutrients that peanuts don't.

I have had it once. it was good. I can use it instead of peanut butter in cookie recipies. But it is very hard to find where I live and so I just haven't bought any peanut butter lately.

I've never tried it in cookie recipes as almond butter, but I have used almond meal in baking before. I think the meal is one step from turning into almond butter. But it's expensive, and if raw, seems like it would be more nutritious on a slice of toast than a cookie, I would think.
