Politico.com "Culture of Conspiracy: The Birthers

The conspiracy theorists have an odd name which sounds more like a group of mothers in Maturnity Wards then a political movement, described by Politico.com as a "fringe groip". They're also turning out to be an embarassment to conservative Republicans. The full article can be found here with excerpts below. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0209/19450.html Bill Clinton had the Vince Foster "murder." George W. Bush had 9/11 Truth. And the new administration has brought with it a new culture of conspiracy: The Birthers. Out of the gaze of the mainstream and even the conservative media is a flourishing culture of advocates, theorists and lawyers, all devoted to proving that Barack Obama isn't eligible to be president of the United States. Viewed as irrelevant by the White House, and as embarrassing by much of the Republican Party, the subculture still thrives from the conservative website WorldNetDaily, which claims that some 300,000 people have signed a petition demanding more information on Obama's birth, to Cullman, Alabama, where Sen. Richard Shelby took a question on the subject at a town hall meeting last week. Their confinement to the fringe hasn't cooled the passion of believers; the obscure New York preacher James Manning turned up at a National Press Club session in December to declare the president "the most notorious criminal in the history not just of America, but of this entire planet." A quick reality check, before we dive in: The challenges to Obama's eligibility have no grounding in evidence. Courts across the country have summarily rejected the movement's theory — that Obama can't be a citizen because his father wasn't —as a misreading of U.S. law; and Hawaii officials, along with contemporary birth announcements, affirm that Obama was in fact born in Honolulu in 1961. But belief in obscure, discredited theories is a constant in a country with a history of partisan division — a country in which, a recent survey showed, 34 percent of the public believes in UFOs and 24 percent believes in witches.. .... The conservative talk show host Michael Medved recently referred to the movement's leaders as "crazy, nutburger, demagogue, money-hungry, exploitative, irresponsible, filthy conservative imposters" who are "the worst enemy of the conservative movement." "It makes us look weird. It makes us look crazy. It makes us look demented. It makes us look sick, troubled, and not suitable for civilized company," he mourned. .... The White House is, presently, ignoring the birth certificate questions, having released an official copy of the Hawaii certificate during the presidential campaign. The press aide once tasked with quashing viral rumors, Ben LaBolt, no longer follows the fringe. But lawyers for the Democratic National Committee and for Obama have been steadily batting down a stream of lawsuits, winning motions to dismiss the suits in courts from Pennsylvania to Hawaii, from the state level to the United States Supreme Court. To believers, the legal engagement itself is evidence that something's afoot. "[Obama] is spending hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to keep this information from getting out," said Gary Kreep, the lawyer representing former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, who sued Obama in California to prevent the state from certifying its election results. Keyes recently called the citizenship issue "the greatest crisis this nation has ever seen" and warned of "chaos, confusion and civil war." Kreep has been battling Obama's California lawyer, Fredric Woocher, to release the president's records from Occidental College on the theory that they might provide information about his citizenship. Woocher has threatened to seek sanctions against Kreep for pursuing the case. "This suit, like all of the others that have been filed challenging Obama's qualifications for the Presidency, is frivolous," he said in an email to POLITICO, adding that he is, in fact, working pro bono. "There is absolutely no truth to the stories about the untold millions supposedly being paid to us," he said. Most of the lawsuits seek documents and express dissatisfaction with the State of Hawaii's refusal to release for public inspection Obama's original birth certificate rather than the notarized copy typically issued. The state's governor, Linda Lingle, has attested to the authenticity of the birth certificate, and Hawaii law forbids its release; Kreep blamed Democratic control of Hawaii for the refusal to release it. (Lingle is a Republican.)

Some people might call them "imposters" and "the worst enemy of the conservative movement," while others would call them "watch dogs with a bull dog determination to get at the truth." I would dismiss these people as pointless were it not for the fact that so much of Obama's past history has been locked away from view of the public. No only his birth certificate, but college records and a lot more information is shrouded in secrecy. Here is a list of some of the things we still don't know about him, and why we may never know. As quoted from Conservapedia: "The Democratic party feels it necessary to keep all questions about Obama at a safe distance. It is an unprecedented move to keep secrets about a presidential candidate(now president, of course.) The following questions remain sealed from the public. Certified Copy of original Birth certificate Columbia College records Columbia Thesis paper Campaign donor analysis requested by 7 major watchdog groups Harvard College records Illinois State Senate records Illinois State Senate schedule Law practice client list and billing records/summary Locations and names of all half-siblings and step-mothers Medical records (only the one page summary released so far) Occidental College records Parent's Marriage Certificate Record of baptism Selective Service Registration Trips schedules for trips outside of the United States before 2007 Scholarly articles Access to his Grandmother (Obama's Grandmother has since passed away from cancer . List of all campaign workers that are lobbyists Obama keeps donations secret by exploiting a loophole that allows campaigns to refuse to divulge donations under $200.00. This is useful to the candidate because many of his contributions are from dubious foreign or illegal sources. It is described as the "largest pool of unidentified money that has ever flooded into the U.S. election system, before or after the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reforms of 2002." With all the ducking and hiding going on here, a lot of people are still wondering why all the secrecy is necessary and what he is hiding. It appears the "fringe groups" are the ones in the forefront of the investigation and I say more power to them!

Once this little ball got rolling a lot of folks suddenly wanted to look at documents that they have no legal right to look at. I'm pretty sure that no one has the legal right to look at my college records or baptism record...I do have privacy rights and so does Obama. My parents and family members have a right to their privacy, too, so were I in his position I would seek to ensure that their privacy was protected as well. Access to his grandmother? Damn straight I'd take steps to keep people from trying to exploit my grandmother. His grandmother was an old woman, not in the best of health and she didn't need that kind of stress. As far as the rest of your list...it looks like some apples were added to the basket of oranges and, in my opinion, it's due to the "pest factor" and, again, right to privacy issues.

My, my, but he PROMISED to be open and forthright about EVERYTHING. So much for promises. I wish my personal information were as well protected as his.

Where did he promise to be open and forthright about his personal business and that of his family? When did he promise to give up everyone in his extended family's rights to privacy to every Tom, D1ck and Harry who files a lawsuit or wants to "investigate" something?

What really amazes me is the fact that even if they are right ( which I know is not true), what do they expect to happen next?If Obama stepped down ( not even a remote possibility) Biden will be in charge, so nothing will change. What fools, it will still not get McCain into the office which in my opinion seems to be their real goal. What do they really want a new election? Get real, these people need to move on and get life.

"if Obama stepped down ( not even a remote possibility) Biden will be in charge, so nothing will change." sure it would, we would have a candidate in the presidential position who's citizenship wasn't in unprecidented question "What fools, it will still not get McCain into the office" Thank God "And as for treason, better watch out, the things you are saying can also be considered that." I would go take a good read of the consitution, as you obviously do not know what you are talking about. Treason is not speaking out against or demanding the trial of a president, it is crimes against the constitution and the country.

Oh Rose, get your head out of....those one sided political law websites and read the definition of treason. While you're at it, read the 25th. Amendment. Obama would not be charged with treason. There would actually be two processes if it was determined that he was not a natural citizen and knew it...a judicial one and an executive one. On the judicial side he would most likely be charged with campaign and election fraud, among other things. So would any members of the Democratic Party who knowingly participted in the fraud but each person charged would have the right to a trial which would take years. Meanwhile the House Judiciary Committee would investigate the charges against Obama and vote to impeach him. He would either eventually be impeached or he would step down. Either way, Joe Biden would become the President. This is all layed out in the 25th Amendment so there will be no constitutional crisis. If Obama is impeached or steps down, Biden becomes the President and appoints someone to replace him as V.P. If there is evidence that Biden also participated in campaign and election fraud then he would face the same fate...both judicial and executive...BUT the likelihood of both of them stepping down at the same time is nill...not gonna happen so, either way, the person appointed as V.P. would become the President. And here's one you'll really like. If both cannot continue to serve for whatever reason, the Speaker of the House becomes the President. That would be Nancy Pelosi. There is nothing in the Constitution that invalidates an election or allows for the runners up to jump in after a President has been sworn in. It's too late for McCain and Palin. The election is over, the win was certified and Obama was sworn in as President. If he has done anything illegal he will be dealt with AS a President according to the Constitution. You can keep dreaming but those are the facts.

Wow you are really living in a fantasy world aren't you? I know your go in life is to get McCain in office, but it is NOT going to happen! And as for treason, better watch out, the things you are saying can also be considered that.

This is so riduclues. The whole issue was taken care of during the campaigning. All this is, is a matter of sore losers. It's a shame that that these same people didn't jump on the issues of the hanging chads in Florida when there was the undecided election for Bush's last election. You didn't here the Republicans raising the roof over the issue of having to have a recount. They just knew that the election was run clean, but gave over to letting the chads be counted just to give the other side somethng to do. It's the same thng here with doubt on Obama's birth. Let the sore losers make a further mule of themselves. What they don't see is if Obama wasn't a legal citizen, would he had even made it as far as he did when he became Senator? Sore, sore, losers. if Obama wasn't a legal citizen, would he had even made it as far as he did when he became Senator? yes, the requirements are far less for a u.s. senetor. "It's a shame that that these same people didn't jump on the issues of the hanging chads in Florida when there was the undecided election for Bush's last election" Go up a few posts and read my post. the conspiricy theorists the article mentions are the same people who thought Bush's election was rigged. and they are not republicans. this article is wildly inaccurate.

It's not, because you don't have to be a natural born citizen to be a U.S. senator. the question is not whether or not Obama is a citizen, but whether or not he is a natural born citizen. Either way, I'm not sold on the whole thing myself and am fairly confident that he is, but there are a number who aren't. But, it is no small issue if that is the case, it is not just a "technicality" it is a profound issue of constitutional eligibility.

afahctor, I can't believe that even as a Senator that checking one's citizenship is not just as much as a priority as it would be to be a President. That doesn't make sense. I wish that the whole matter would be put to rest, but then again, that would be taking away from the sore loser's somethng to scream about, wouldn't it? DCMerkle
