Are you afraid of travelling to new countries?

I have lived in small communities in Canada all of my life. I would definitely like to travel to exotic places (Egypt, Greece, Austrailia, New Zealand, Bali) but am afraid to leave my country. I have heard so many horrible things on the news and don't do well in strange environments. Living in Canada is so safe compared to other places in the world. Well, except if you live on the west coast; they have real problems with drive by shootings right now. I would like to meet people from other countries and learn about your culture.

Ok well that's a thought... I am not that confident and don't make friends easily. I think it's a trust issue. You have travelled quite alot! Do you find people are the same wherever you go? I have been told that Canadians are among the friendliest of people but sometimes I'm not so sure. Do you travel with your work or just for pleasure?

i travel for both work and pleasure. these days i travel on holidays as i am now married with kids and tend to work from home for the last 10 years. I find people of all countrys the same. some really friendly, some rude, some suspicios and some xynophobic. no different than my home town.

My kids have all grown up and gone now. What kind of work do you do from home? I live in a rural area, and would love to find something that I could do here. Thanks for your reply and your support, I really do appreciate your comments.

I live in England and I always wanted to go traveling when I was a child. My dream for doing that came true. I went to Greece and the Netherlands before going all around Europe by train. I went to Tunisia and to St Lucia next. Then I spent just over one year on my fantastic trip around the world. I have been to more than fifty different countries and I have almost all of time stayed really safe. I got sick in Asia and fell down a drain in the Far East. I one place I got attacked surprised me, the Maldives, because nothing bad happened to me in Nairobi, Los Angeles or Jerusalem. I suggest wearing a money belt when traveling. I hope that you will go traveling to places similar to Canada first then later I wish that you will have lots more confidence to traveling. I suggest go visit places like Australia and New Zealand first because they are very safe countries. Bali, Greece and Egypt would be countries with different cultures and languages. They are fairly safe and I am certain you would be fine there. Good luck.

Hello Maximax - you are very welcome for the best response! I hope you enjoy your trip to Canada. Someday we may get to Austrailia, but with the way our economy has tanked in the past year, I don't think we'll be going to far away from home for awhile. Happy myLotting!

Thanks for your reply! How exciting to have travelled so many places, I just can't imagine. You have made some really good points and should I ever get to travel, I will definitely keep them in mind. I would love to go to Austrailia. When I was a young girl, I babysat for a couple from there. They were wonderful people and had great sense of humour. Cheers!

Sometimes, it's difficult to do some of the things that we want to do. But if you're really afraid, then I do not think that it is a good idea. It's best to do something that we feel comfortable doing, not the things that we feel uncomfortable doing.

You are soooo right. I guess when I was younger, I had to do more of the things that I didn't want to do. Now that I am "mature" (ha ha), I can choose more carefully realizing the outcomes.

I would like to travel to some countries, but I am scared of accidents. not anything major but things like: what if someone steals my money and tickets so I can't get home, what if I am late from my plane etc. silly.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel! Also major stuff too: What if there is a natural disaster and we can't get home... like what just happened in Haiti. What if there is a government takeover with martial law instituted and we can't get home. I don't think you are being silly at all... there are so many bad things going on. I am lucky to live in Canada, where my personal rights are generally respected, especially as a woman. I would never visit a country where they treat their dogs better than they treat their women either. I am too outspoken and would probably end up caned, in jail or worse. Happy myLotting!

I do fear it too, yet would love to visit many places. Just make sure to learn as much as you can about the place, especially the emergency languages. Also make sure to know their local law and travel with someone or an organization. But do it when you are really ready! Good luck and best wishes.

I am afraid to fly now too. But a friend of mine who was and is still afraid to fly just flew all by herself! I was encouraged by her courage and now I know that one day we will get there. She said don't rush it though! I sooo want to go to the Dominican Republic... how did you know?

I think I would have to start out with travelling to the US, and then other english speaking countries - Dominican Republic? I love the beach. Travelling with an organization or group sounds like a good idea. Now I just have to get over my fear of flying! Maybe I should start out with Canada, it is a huge country and beautiful too.
