"MASSILON, Ohio - Evidence of the slumping economy is stacking up at an Ohio school which has nearly 700 applications for one open janitorial job.
Officials at Perry Local Schools near Canton in northeast Ohio say they've extended the deadline until Monday to accommodate the overwhelming response to the week-old posting.
The full-time position at Edison Junior High School pays $15 to $16 an hour plus benefits.
Superintendent John Richard says many applicants are laid-off workers with heart-wrenching stories about the tough economic times.
Donna Croston, 49, said she applied after losing jobs at two nearby factories that closed.
Croston said her chances of being hired amid the hundreds of applicants are slim, but that she was hoping to get lucky."
i used to be a janitor and i didnt mind it but i remember the days when people would just scoff at becoming one so yeah.. you know people want a job any job if they are lining up for this! would you be desperate enough to do janitorial work or do you have standards on what you would do and what you would not do?

I like to eat so, yes, I'd go for a janitorial job... any job!
Times are most certainly bad. No, beyond 'bad'... downright horrible! It's like you mentioned all over the place. There are waiting lists to be hired for McDonald's, WalMart, and the like. People with college degrees are on those waiting lists!
I knew we were heading downhill when the work I used to do from home (proofreading and typesetting) was being sent overseas (mostly to India) because the labor is cheaper there. This was way back in the early 90's! Man, that hurt! I had been doing this for 20 years, then it was gone... vanished... unless I wanted to move to India!
That's one of our problems in this country. Profit, profit, profit!!! American companies want bigger profits so they send the work where it's cheapest to do. Foreigners are coming in on work visas and taking jobs that should be going to American citizens right now. Smaller companies are going belly-up. Larger companies are being sold to foreigners who hire 'their own' instead of American citizens.
Our government is so 'foreigner-friendly' that they're driving life-long citizens out! I'm not against anyone trying to make a better life for themselves, but when it takes the food out of the mouths of American citizens, I get angry.
It's scary! It's terrifying, actually. I'm not old enough to remember the 'Great Depression' but I've heard stories about it from those who were there. It wasn't pretty. We're heading there again... fast.
Unless some drastic changes are made in our government, we will be experiencing a new meaning of the word "depression". It's scary, for sure.

I don't want to start a political conversation here but I've heard some interesting things coming from Washington lately. Changes are definitely afoot. I only hope that these changes are as good as they seem, that they WILL happen, and that they're not too late.
Moon, anyone who might get angry at what you (and I) said are those whom the fear hasn't hit yet... those who have plenty of money, aren't worried about the economy and refuse to see how it's falling into a depression.
Catilda, you are so very right! We need to plant seeds, and not just the kind that grow into vegetables, either! We all need to start thinking of ideas to help everyone get through these tough times and probably worse times ahead.
My son just helped me by setting the foundation pipe outside so I can put up my umbrella-type clothesline to dry our clothes outside. It's one major way we can all cut down on expenses... stop using those clothes dryers! They eat more energy than most other things we might be using (aside from heat for our homes). Hey, if you're anywhere close to my age, your parents did't have a clothes dryer either, and they got by. I remember my mother's fingers being so red after hanging the laundry outside in the wintertime.
If you MUST use a clothes dryer (with no space to hang clothes outside), disconnect the vent (bendable piping going from dryer to outside vent) going to the outside wall, cover the hole in the wall with something thick so the cold air doesn't come in, tape some kind of lint trap to the end of the dryer vent hose (like pantyhose or something similar) and let that hot, moist air stay in your home instead of heating up the outside. (There's a gadget you can buy to do just this, but you don't need to buy anything... just use what you have.)
As for real seeds, vegetable seeds, I've already started my long-season veggie seeds, like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and celery. I'll be starting other things like broccoli, melons and other things that need an early start within the next couple of weeks. I've also planted perennials like kiwis, grapes, asparagus, many different kinds of herbs and a bunch of fruit trees. I do a little more each year, then save some seeds for the next year's garden.
Whatever I grow that can't be eaten fresh, I plan to share. I'll be canning, freezing and drying a lot this year also so I won't have to buy too much next winter.
You're so very right about planting seeds! You can grow a tomato plant, pepper plant, even a potato plant on any balcony so having no room is no excuse to do what you can.
Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a veggie growing lesson. LOL I'll behave and stop now.

yeah it all comes down to that we as a country need to help ourselves survive before we start helping out everyone else.. a lot of people will be angry at me saying that but its true.. and yeah its headed towards another great depression and that just scares me

Honestly i would do it. It pays almost double what i get paid at the moment anyways. Besides i have an aunt and uncle who are retired school janitors and i know its a good job, although looked down upon. I guess the saying "Its a dirty job, but someone has to do it" applies. What is sad is that there were so many applicants. A field i would recommend people looking into is the job i do, because there is always a need for home health care people, and its not as bad as people think it is.

I would take anything if I was desperate....but on the other hand....we actually were talking about this today...our state has big time unemployment right now...yet no one ever comes in to apply for a opening....we think alot of people are drawing their unemployment and not banging their feet to the pavement like they should be....that is just in our state...I don't know about other states or what their unemployment rate is.

Yes, the economy is bad if 700 people are lined up for one job!!! And here I thought that South Carolina was the state that had lower job selcetions.. Wow!!! Yes, I would be standing in that line, if I really needed a job and the money. But since, I have an Herniated Disc in my back, I can't work like I used to. In the past, I did used to work as a housekeeper. And it was tough! This was my last job that I ever worked to. It is bad that many people are losing their jobs due to the economy. I hope that it gets much better very soon! No wonder people are stressed to the max! This is pitiful! We all pray that things will change real soon! I hope that Barak Obama can bring some peace to thie country.. Pronto!!

At $15-16 an hour, and if I am out of a job, I will definitely go for it.
That job is paying better than most of the janitorial jobs available locally!
Assuming that you work the regular 8 hours a day.
At even $15 an hour, you are looking at a pay cheque of $120 a day!
5 days a week, 4 weeks a month, you are talking about $2400 a month! Plus benefits!
Heck, that is almost what I am making if you don't count conversion in the currency!
Darn! I am grossly underpaid as a professional!

That is truly sad. We are certainly in bad shape as a country right now. I am very scared for several of my family members. So far my husband and I are OK, but you never know these days. I am just so worried about so many people. I hope something good happens soon.

Wo
this really is shocking!~ I didn't know the effect was that bad!~ I wouldn't mind any job as long as it's not illegal like robbing & stealing & all that stuff!~
It is an honest living anyway!~ I've never looked down on any of those kinds of jobs. Just simply think of it this way, if there was no janitor, if there were no garbage collectors, no road sweepers......I think it would be a stinking world we'll be leaving in? Haha

Yikes!!! I don't think it's that hard to look for a job there. Many companies are still hiring for entry level positions. The only ones I think who were affected by the economy are the top level executives who have a big spending account. Big companies still hire young professionals to take over the executives' work at a lower cost. this is just my opinion though.

I see nothing wrong with being a janitor. And as for standards, I think no one is better than anyone or any job. In these tough times people would be fools to turn done a job just because they think it's beneth them. All that matters that your working a honest days work for money to provide for yourself and family.

I cannot see anything wrong in a janitorial job. It is a decent job just remember that "there is always dignity in labor." As long as you are working hard for your money and not violating any human rights law, it is just alright.

I guess that when it comes to desperate times, it really doesn't matter what the job is. What really matters is to bring food to the table for the family. I have been through that road before and i know how hard it is to just do any job that pays.
Anyway, i love your animated avatar. How do you do that ?

I agree, nothing wrong with janitorial work. They are my best friend as a teacher and I try to keep them happy! I think as long as you can be happy doing what you are doing there isn't anything wrong with any job, so long as it's legal of course. Anora
