Which one do you think saves more money?

I was listening at a couple of people at work talking about how much their electric bill has went up. One said that by leaving the central heat and air unit on and set at a certain temperature..he saved more money than turning it on and off as needed. The other person swore that it saved money to turn it down at night and up during the day. Which do you think saves more money? Leaving the unit at a certain temp or turning it up and down as needed?

I always leave mine on a certain temperature.
I thought that would be saving money but I'm not sure either.

hello jenintn
when that my family and myself have the central heat and air conditioning unit on, it is set to one temperature all of the time. i heard or read somewhere the other day that if you set your therometer on sixty-eight degrees and leave it there, then that will reduce your electricity bill, when that the thermostat is set to over sixty-eight degrees, that increases your electricity bill by a high percent and i do not remember what that percentage was. lol it was like by a fourth of the electricity bill. so i think that it does make sense to keep the thermostat set to one temperature all of the time to save on the electricity bill.
take care and have a beautiful evening.

We have ours on a timer and when we're not home it's set colder in the winter and warmer in the summer to conserve energy. My mother-in-law turns hers on and off as needed. I don't honestly know which one saves more money.

Leaving it on when no one is there is not good. It is actually better to have a thermostat that is programmable. It saves more money. Mine lowers the heat when we are not home, an hour after we go to bed, an hour before we wake up and it does save us more money that way.
We also have a room we only use for guests so that has the heat turned off and we have a thing under the door to prevent drafts from that room.
We only use CFC bulbs and not incandescent, we have all new, Energy-star appliances, we use the dishwasher rather than washing dishes by hand as it saves water and electric. Each time we run water, we use the well pump which takes electricity, more than using the recycled water in the dishwasher.
We will be getting a tankless water heater this summer and next year are planning to get solar panels for our roof and a wind turbine. Since we get plenty of sun and wind, we will most likely not have an electric bill.
Your friend who turns it up and down is saving more money. It is not hard to prove as we kept records to see if it made a difference. You can see your usage on your bills and if you are not convinced, can see how fast or slow your meter is turning.
It is a fallacy that you use a lot of energy for the room to reheat. My husband worked for the electric company, too, and this is something that he said many people believe but it is not true.

There is a company called CitizenRe that you can sign up to rent them. It is very cost effective. Check it out on line.

I can't really be sure. I think the latter is what is better, as per the temperature outside. Even more, making sure the unit is turned off altogether and windows are open or fans are on, lol, would probably save more money. Not quite sure about that though!

i had an electrician tell me one time if it's not running it will not cost you when i ask him about this. i turn mine way down at night because i can't sleep where it's hot. thankfully my house doesn't take but a few minutes to warm up.

Even though I've never experimented with the other options I've always just turned mine on and off as needed. That has always saved me money.

What works for us is leaving it set at a certain temperature. We keep it so the air is slightly cool, but not cold. Just enough to be comfortable, barely. I won't even turn it on till it's at least 85 outside.

Me either snowcat! I try not to turn the air on at all and just use fans in the summer. My heat is however through the same unit so I have to use that a little more. I may try it both ways and document my bill to see which is better. There are other things to consider though such as weather, temp, etc. Thanks for the response.

I think the first one should save more money because it does not require more power to heat up.
