Have You Children Had Extremely High Temperatures That Scared You?

My 2 year old son has been sick since yesterday. This morning about 2:30 am I woke up and I could feel the heat radiating from his body. He was laying next to me in bed but wasn't touching me. I got up and got the thermometer and some tylenol. I gave him a dose of medicine and then took his temperature. He had a temperature of 104. It totally scared me because he has never had a temperature that high before. I waited about an hour and took his temperature again and it was slowing going down. It is now 102. If it doesn't get any lower in the next hour I think I may take him to the emergency room, if it does go down then I will probably get him in with the doctor as soon as possible tomorrow. Have you children ever had high temperatures that scared you?

My son was 12 mos old, I was going to take him to the Dr. in the morning, he had a fever of 102, I was visiting my mom, fell asleep and she woke me about 4 in the morning, his fever had gone to 104 and he went into convulsions. I took him to the car to take him to the ER. Was cold out, I could see the steam coming off of him, kind of like the steam that comes out of a dryer vent. Ended up he had phneumonia. Once the body gets to a temp of 104 the brain could start to literally "fry" and cause retardation. I cant imagine him being any different than he is today (he's 19) but not knowing anything that happens at 103/104 degree temps could have made him very dependant on me and everyone else. Did you get him to the Dr.? When there are warning signs like this, the body is warning you that something is horribly wrong!!

Yes, I took both my kids to the doctor yesterday. They both have the flu and my so also has tonsilitis. The doctor said to watch them closely so it doesn't develop into phneumonia. They seem to be feeling a little better this morning.

Yes, that's scary! When my boys had high fevers, though, they never went about 103. Once I saw that I gave them Tylenol and put them in a lukewarm bath to bring it down. That always works pretty well. I see it's been a few hours since you started this, I hope you didn't have to take him in and that it's nothing serious.

Once, when my son was 3 years old, he his temp went up so high that he started hallucenating (sp?). It scared the heck out of me. Took him to the emergency room and get him checked out and he was fine. His temp was just really high. It's always best to get it check out if you're worried. It's better to be safe than sorry right? Take care and I hope your baby feels better soon!

When I was pregnant with my son and my daughter was at an ultrasound with me she started acting terrible and I was like what is wrong with you why are you acting this way. After the ultrasound was over I checked her and she was burning up. I was in the hospital so I immediately went to the emergency room. When we got there they checked her temperature and it was at 104 so they said they would be right out to the waiting room with ibuprofin before she even saw the doctor so that way they could get her fever down. I waited over an hour with her sleeping on my lap when I finally got mad and frantic and went up and asked when they were going to bring her the ibuprofin. They had the nerve to tell me they forgot all about her. I was furious. She was 3 and burning up and they forget about her. How could they let that happen. By the time they gave her the ibuprofin her fever was at 105. I had never been so scared in my life. I've heard children can die from having fevers that high. She was fine after that but it still scares me to think about it and remember how hot she felt. It turned out that she had a urinary tract infection and that was what was causing her to become so sick so fast.

My stepson and i just went through this high fever. From my expirience as long as the child is acting ok, you just need to get the fever down. If they are acting sick then you need to get them in somewhere. To get the fever down from home: you can give them tylenol or motrin (some say you can alternate but, i'd ask your own doc) if you only use one i prefer motrin. Strip them down. Give them a tepid bath, give them cool foods and drinks (popsicle, cool water etc). The key is to keep them from shivering. When they shiver the body heats up. So don't have too cold of a bath or have them standing in front of an a/c. Also once the fever is over 102 they aren't supposed to have anything pasturized (milk, oj etc)..Hope this is helpful.

My brother and I both had extremely high temperatures, and one of my was so bad it was close to 103. The highest for my brother was about 106 or higher because of his Type 1 Diabetes. Oh, that is another thing that I meant to mention about people with Diabetes, you have less immunity to the flu or any other disease, so do not think for two seconds that you cannot catch anything from anyone, you can.

my daughter has and it wasn't going away..tylenol would suppress it but only for a couple of hrs. so i took her to the dr.'s n it turned out she had a urinary tract infection...she was only 5 mos. old and her temp got as high as 106. they hospitalized her and after a week she was ok...now what sux is that since she already had 1 UTI she will always be susceptible to them.

wow 104 I would of been freaking. I was going crazy when my daughters temperature was at 102.9 after giving her some tylenol it went down. For 2 days she ran fever. Then her skin broke out with little red spots all over her. I took her to the dr and they said she would be fine and didn't give her anything. I usually just call my dr and ask what to do then always run her in now b/c most of the time I can do what they do at home and if they ask me to bring her in then I will.

Yes my children have had really high temperatures at times. In fact one of my boys hallucinates when he gets a high temperature, and that is really scary to me because he really sees things that are not there and it is pretty horrible. I always panic anyway at the first sign of a temperature, I hate it when they are ill.

When my youngest son was a year and 4 months old, he had fever and with his high temperature, he was also experiencing slight sleep apnea. It was already 2 in the morning, I have to get a good sleep for I was going to an out-of-town seminar that day, but I couldn't sleep. We were in bed and suddenly my wife told me that we have to bring the baby to the hospital. The doctor told us that we have to confine the baby. I was so bothered about the seminar but my mind is with my baby. I went to the seminar and it was the last time, as I remember, my more than 24 hour continued no-sleep experience. My baby is turning 2 years in April and is very healthy now, but still snores loudly at night...

My oldest son, when he was 4 years old, had a fever of 103. Tylenol would not bring it down, not even one degree. I took him to the emergency room and it was found that he had pneumonia. They immediately gave him an antibiotic suppository to bring his temperature down as fast as possible. THAT kind of fever is nothing to wait around for... that's a serious infection somewhere in your little sweetie's body! I'm sure that, by now, you've done something... at least I hope so! A fever of 105 can kill an older person if it's not brought down quickly. A fever of 104 for a two-year-old is serious! Please keep me informed. I worry about stuff like this!

It's been just over four years ago now, but I remember when all three of my kids had a fever of 104 or higher at the same time. That was really scary for me. My oldest got sick first, and when his temp got that high, I took him to the ER, along with my younger son who also had a raging high fever. At the time, I left my daughter with a babysitter. By the time I got to the pharmacy to get medicine, the sitter called me to tell me my daughter was now burning up too. When I left, she didn't have a fever at all! I immediately called the doctor and told him so he could call her medicine in too. I was a scared Mommy. It took almost a week to get them all better! Try giving him a Tylenol and a luke-warm, not hot, not cold bath to help bring his temp down. Actually, you can and should alternate Tylenol with Ibuprofen for his fever. That is what I was instructed to do. Make sure he gets plenty of fluids, to help keep him from dehydrating! I hope that he gets to feeling better soon!

Yeah, couple of times we took our little one to the emergency room with temperatures like that - she never had any prolonged problems, but once we even took her clothes off an put her in a cold bath we were so worried. We have a National health service advice line we can call in the UK, and I think they told us what to do... This only happened about two or three times and they grow out of it - there are a number of things you can do to cool them down as long as it isn't done too quickly - keep monitoring the temp and if it doesn't go down of it's own accord, then professional medical help is the best option.

I do hope that your sons temperature has gone down now and that he is feeling better now. I know how terrifying it is when they have temperature like this - I also know how scary it is to watch s child having a febrile convulsion caused by such a high temp. I would most likely already have taken him to the dr with a tmp of 104 and if you cannot get it below 100 within a few hours then definitely needs seen Other advice is to make sure that they drink plenty of fluids as if they get dehydrated their kidneys can get affected. AS well as meds and drinks I would strip him down and bathe with a tepid flannel, not cold as that would give them a chill! Hugs for you! xxx

My son has had fevers as high a 104 and he is only 20 months. I ran him to the emergency room one night, and the doctors just gave him some tylonol and sent us home. I guess babies get higher temps then we do as adults. You are right to be concerned, but it sounds like you are doing all the right things.

The same thing happen to me with my daughter but her temperature was 104 and it scared me so bad that I started to cry. I had just took her to the emergency room that day and they said she was okay, just a cold. And about 1:00 in the morning she had been sleeping with me so I can keep an eye on her and I was turning over and it felt like I stuck my arm to something really hot and I jumped up to check her temperature and it said 104. I do not have a car so I couldn't of took her back to the emergency room so I gave her some Motrin and I stayed up the rest of the night to see if it was going to go down and eventually it did. The next morning I took her to her doctor as a walk-in and found out she had pnuemonia. It is truly a scary feeling.

i can tell you from experience that a 104 temp is danger. one of my triplets had a 104 temp 3 years ago and went into a seizure i had to call the ambulance out .they did check for brain damage we were lucky things turned out that way.104 temp you should always try to bring down as soon as you can and with a fever that high i would head to the emergency room .if you have ever seen a child have a seizure it is very scarey and sad.god bless you and your little one.
