Well today, March 17th as you know is St. Patrick's Day, and whether or not you're into celebrating St. Patrick per se since folks of Irish heritage know the real truth behind St. Patrick's "mission" (and no not to drive snakes out of Ireland, but to destroy the pagan religions--but not going to get too political here at the moment) The thing is, St. Patrick's Day is still a day to celebrate in general Irish heritage. I'm part Irish myself (along with other ethnic groups)....and yes I get my Irish up and wear a bit of the green on this day. My Irish heritage comes from part of my maternal line...the first person to come to America from Ireland was my great-great grandfather Edward Burk (that's how he spelled it) and came in 1851 from County Claire and I still have his signed declaration to become an American and forsake his former homeland. My Irish great-grandmother's line is a bit sketchier but were of the Lees from County Mayo (God Preserve Us as those from that county would often say). We Irish are a stubborn lot..we're proud as hell, we're fighters, known to have tempers and hissy fits...--given that I'm also part Scottish, Welsh and English...now you just KNOW how stubborn I can be.But as they say on St. Patrick's Day everyone seems to love celebrating with a bit of the green...do you even if you're not Irish? How many of you are of Irish blood? Do you celebrate with the traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage meal and perhaps some Irish Soda Bread? Do you drink a bit of the Guinness? Mead? Ale? I'm thinking of fixing a genuine dinner for myself as I have to admit I haven't had it in ages....nix the beer though as I'm not into beer...LOL And now for a wee bit of entertainment here...here is a YouTube video of Riverdance....get those feet dancing folks....LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXEl1pEOoec&feature=related (Warning: NOT a referral link but a link to Riverdance video) So Happy St. Patrick's Day To Ya...and here's a pot of gold for luck

We had to wear a bit of green.. made clovers to stick on the floor and the walls and a leprechaun hahaha. they even served us a green banana cake for a treat hahaha... imagine taking calls with green cakes stuck in between your teeth lol kidding... By the way... Happy St. Patrick's Day, Pye!!!! I'm not wearing green today waaaaah. I forgot that my green blouse is in the laundry basket ... I'm wearing bright orange lol...but right now I have corned beef for lunch hee hee... though we don't have any merrymaking stuff after work... too bad... I hope you all enjoy St. Paddy's day there... hugs, pye...

My great grandmother from my mom's dad's side was a Dailey/Daily/Daley from the County Cork. Apparently there are still relatives over there. My father's name is Irishized Scot, when the English sent the protatsant Scots to Ireland, they Irishized their names and came to America. The first one came over with William Penn.

The Irish names in my family were Burk(e), Maddock, Lee and Kelley...yikes try to find the history behind common names like Lee and Kelley.. I'd really like to find out more about my great-grandmother's line as it was thought there origins were actually older in America than the potato famine years and may have first settled in the south ...my great-grandmother had many southern traditions that were thought strange in Brooklyn, NY...LOL

Well, all the ancestors came over before Ellis Island opened, but only just barely. That includes both of mom's grandmothers and her grandfather on her mother's side. The Pateral name side came to settle in New Amsterdam, but her grandfather married the Dailey, and her mother's side was German/English - her English grandfather wouldn't let her German grandmother teach any of the children German. However, a couple of words slipped down to us anyway - thank you and bless you (when you sneeze).

All my ancestors on my other ethnic groups came to America long before Ellis Island also...mainly in the late 1600s and early 1700s--that would be the German side mainly and French, Spanish, Dutch, English, Scottish and Welsh

The weather cooperated here in NYC for St. Patrick's, especially for the parade...we've had St. Paddy's Days in the past where it actually snowed!

I don't think there is a lot of Irish Heritage in my background but there should have been. We can find some Scots back there and my grandmother has never really illuminated me about what her ancestry might be, but I know I have some German and Swedish in me. I am celebrating by wearing a Gaelic Storm T-shirt. They are Gaelic band that plays both traditional Irish music and some originals. They have several albums out and they make the World Music charts now and again. Most people have seen them and don't know it. They were the steerage band on Titanic. And it was actually them not just their music, I even paused it once just to make sure . I have been listening to their music today in celebration and I was thinking of partaking in an Irish Whiskey and Coke after work. I am jealous of my Dad he is in NY for a meeting and he got to see the parade there and he is going to a pub with other people from the meeting. Such is life if you work 4-9 no pubbing for me.

Pye- I just love your threads! Today we all wore our green though my family is not personally Irish. My first husband was 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Cherokee so I just always celebrated because of his Pawpaw with my older children. Even in my second marriage it's just a part of my custom. And today being the day before our daughter's surgery we needed the celebration time. The husband is working, and it's just me and children so not much fancy tonight. I don't care for Guinness but I do enjoy Mead. Though tonight I'll be working some more on a few school things, but spending most of my time following the baby's strict eating guideline so that she gets lots to eat before she can't eat anymore before surgery tomorrow, and packing the bags. Enjoy your celebrations!! Namaste-Anora

Thank you for this very pleasant diversion, pyewacket! I really get a kick out of Riverdance. I remember a few years ago when I was so excited to hear that a popular group was slated to appear locally, and I wanted so badly to go, but, alas, I could not afford the price of the tickets.Since I watch a lot of PBS I do get to see them occasionally. Great post!

Happy Saint Patricks Day to you! I am Irish on my moms side of the family, The family is from County Cork, and my moms maiden name was Gillick. We used to have a relitive that would send us all shamrocks in the mail around Saint Patricks Day. I had a corned beef dinner at my daughters house tonight, ya no cooking for me! I enjoyed watching the video, love Irish dancers, and I always wished I could dance like that. Hope you had fun today as well :)

I sure wish I could dance like that too..LOL. I always wondered something though...the Irish are the only ones to say County (fill in name) rather than the way we say something..we say Orange county, or Suffolk County...we don't say County Suffolk...LOL Just one of those things I wonder about

I, too, have a wee bit of Irish in me, a wee bit less than I'd hoped since my Irish turned out to be Scots Irish, but we hail from County Derry, Limavady Newtown area, Tamlagh Finlagen parish. My mother's great-grandfather and his wife and three small children came to the US along with his all of his wife's siblings but two, and settled in the Millville, NJ, area of Cumberland County. They worked for the glass plant as glassblowers. Even Mom's grandfather, who was the first child born here, was working for the glass plant at age 11. It troubles me to think that any of my ancestors might be associated with "The Troubles" of Northern Ireland. I like to think that they themselves did not agree with the treatment of the native Irish by the British. They moved here around 1865, around 16 years after the infamous potato famine. I wasn't raised with religious or ethnic prejudice and I hope that's because of the influence of my Irish line, since that's the line my mother so closely identified with. Even her sister, a mere three generations later, married a Catholic, so I just don't see my branch being among those who felt the political animosities of others.

I would love to trace my great-grandparents line in Ireland itself...but yikes I'm dealing with common names like Kelly, Burke and Lee. I guess my great-grandparents weren't involved with the political ideals of Ireland as even though they were Catholic, they didn't bat an eye when my mother married a Methodist...LOL

Kind of how I feel about mine with names like Miller and Forrest, although there is a McClean in the Forrest line. I haven't found anything beyond the Miller who came here with his wife Catherine. I know where he lived, and there are Millers still there, but I don't know who he connects to. I didn't have time the one partial day we were in the area to check out their historical center. But, I did go the records office in Belfast and STILL didn't find anything. I did, however, find the passenger records of their coming to the USA. Apparently, Catherine had an older brother who ventured over first before the rest followed.

Oh, and my Irish were Church of Ireland and Episcopalian there, but when they got here, they attended Methodist...most likely because it was the "only game in town".

I'm definitely going next door to the A.N.A.F. club a bit later for several Guinness! They actually have3 it on tap and it's 25 feet from my back door. In this city, the accents are primarily Irish or Scots. There are also 6 Irish pubs within walking distance from the apartment.

This is the first St. Patrick's Day that I didn't wear anything green! Shame on me! I got up this morning and forgot all about it, and by the time I thought of it, I decided that I was already dressed, I wasn't going to worry about it. I didn't make my traditional corn beef and caggabe dinner with gren potatoes either.

I almost put on one of my Hawaiian shirts since it's the only one that has any green on it. My dad's side of the family is Italian, but my mom's side is Scottish/Irish. It's been a while since I've had corned beef, cabbage or Guinness. My St. Patrick's Day dinner consisted of some popcorn chicken with Worcestershire sauce. I did have some Sprite, though (That's in a green can!)
