Flight delay stories?

My most memorable one was probably when I was flying home from Chicago in 1986. Some idiot called in a bomb scare. We all had to go back through security again and our plane was taken down to the other end of the airport. It was searched and all the baggage was x-rayed. By the time we got boarded and into Denver, it was much too late to make our connection and they had to bring in another plane from somewhere. I'd say I ended up being delayed at least 8 hours. Meanwhile, back before we left Chicago, some moron was at the counter cussing out the airline people for the delay, as if it were their fault that some moron had made that call! What are your flight delay stories?

Sorry that it has taken me two weeks to respond. I was caught in a flight delay!! The worst that in ever had was in Munich during a snow storm. There was only one plane coming to the UK and that was to Glasgow not London. My flight to London was cancelled and of course we all wanted to get on the Glasgow flight. That quickly filled up and they couldn't take any more passengers. Being very important I demanded that they put me on it. Of course they didn't. So I had to wait 24 hours in a freezing airport with zillions of others. We did ask about an hotel, but there was no chance. One of my colleagues did get to Glasgow and pleaded that he had to get home to London as his wife was close to delivering their second child. British Airways gave him a taxi - that's a 7-8 hour drive. I wonder how much it cost.

He got a taxi and you didn't even get a room? Doesn't seem quite fair. So, was his wife really pregnant?

I was delayed for a couple of hours in LA once. By the time I made to Detroit..my connecting flight had left. Engine problems was the reason..made a little uncomfortable about boarding..lol..The airlines paid for my stay at a hotel and shuttled me back and forth and paid for a free dinner and breakfast too. I was supposed to be back at work the next day but..what do you do? lol..It really sucked for my ride home because they had driven for an hour to pick me up on a flight I wasn't even on. They had to do it again the next day too.

Yes flight delay is totally a nightmare especially if you are in a tight schedule. I always experience this delay in my domestic flight boracay via caticlan airport. My flight schedule is supposedly 12:45pm but it was delayed for a couple of hours and we were able to bored at around 4:00pm. That's my worst delay flight experience that I would like to share.

Wow! That is an amazing flight delay experience that you have described here. I am glad to say all my flight delay experiences that I will detail are no where near as dramatic. I had been staying on a lovely little Greek Islands and then I took a ferry to Athens. That took five hours and next I had a look around the city. When I arrived at the airport it was packed with people. I had to spend all night there waiting for my heavily delayed plane. When I went to St Lucia the plane was delayed by four hours due to it being searched my Customs and Excise. It was a ten hour flight and sun set happened immediately after landing. On the journey to my accommodation I was bitten my lots of mosquitoes. The plane in Israel wasn't delayed but I certainly was. I was interviewed and felt nervous so I didn't answer well. I was taken to a room and my luggage received a detailed search. They let me go when they found out I was just an innocent traveler. However I almost missed my flight. On my last trip I arrived at the airport to find out my flight was delayed. It was meant to depart at 19.35 but it didn't take off until 01.00. It was terrible trying to keep my toddler son happy. Then we had a 12 hour flight to Cape Town. Luckily he was well behaved on the flight.

Oh goodness~ Can't say that I have anything to top that. There has been flight delays for me before, but that was due to bad weather. Nothing like the story you just shared here. It's been years since I have actually flown. I usually drive as long as it is under 12 hour drive. Though the older I get the harder it is getting to sit that long and drive.

It's about 7 hours from Sacramento to LA but I'd rather fly. If you get the tickets far enough in advance it's almost cheaper. Unless the kids are coming...

In 1968 I was delayed from San Francisco to Los Angles 3 hours due to heavy rain. When I landed I had missed the transfer flight home and the next flight was the next morning. I had a credit card and no cash so I had to call a relative to come get me, he lived about 1 hour away and the rain delayed him another hour. We had no cell phones, it was 2AM and I was very tired and very alone in the large airport, I was also a very inexperienced traveler. But it all turned out all right.

Let's see, an hour from LAX. That would be about 5 miles in LA traffic, right?

I guess. At 3 am, Mulholland Drive shouldn't have been an hour from the airport...

1968 at 3:00AM flood not traffic caused the problem, but he was on Mulholland Dr. near the top of the hill.

I have never been in a bomb scare before it must be so frightening .I would not care how long I waited just as long as it was safe.Maybe they should let these idiots who complain might like the drama of getting blown up.Some people moan about everything the weather, the bus service, fast food restaurants, infact everything they like to try to make a point. What point is only known to them attention I think.Sure it is a pain better get their alive then not at all.xx

lol Too bad the airline people were too polite to suggest to the guy that he might prefer getting blown up. Probably would have just made him madder though...

well, I don't have any real ones, but my mom... once they had to replace the door of the plane! another time the head wind was so bad the plane was 2 hours late the only thing that comes close was the time we were supposed to land in Houston and ended up in Dallas... and the pilot came out saying something about "they'd better fix that!"

We went on a little vacation back in Sept for my baby sister's wedding. Most of my extended family lives in Washington, we live in California. Anyway, I have often joked with everybody about having been 'stuck' in WA for most of my life and having been SO happy to get the hell out of that state. When we were getting ready for our flight back home out of Seatac airport, there was a flight delay. I was so irritated, I was sitting there muttering under my breath about how of course that would happen, of course fate would conspire to not let me leave WA yet again. To make matters worse, we were traveling with our daughter - who is a good traveler but at the time just four and a half. Kids have limited patience, even good kids. I had no idea how long the delay would be. On top of it, we had a transfer, it wasn't a straight flight back to CA. Because of that, the idea that the flight was delayed was even worse - either they'd have to hold the connecting flight (making all the passengers on that flight grouchy) or we'd have to wait for another connecting flight, meaning that we'd be home at least 2 hours later than expected. We finally got on the flight, and lo and behold, when we get to the connecting flight in Oakland, they had held the connection. Next problem - we couldn't get 3 seats together. It would have been okay if airlines still let you hold a 4 year old on your lap (and not buy a seat) but they only do that for 2 and under. We had to ask one of the flight attendants to even try to get TWO seats together, obviously our daughter couldn't sit alone. I sat with her and my husband found another seat. It sucked though, she kept trying to stand up and look for daddy. I was sitting in the aisle and she was in the middle, there was a guy sitting by the window in our row. He was a nice guy, he noticed that she kept asking and trying to see him. After about 10 minutes he said 'I have a little girl too, I understand. Would you like me to trade seats with your husband?' I was sooo grateful. The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful. BUT. We arrived back home in CA, late of course. Then we had to wait for all the bags. I had checked the carseat instead of using it, so it wasn't with us. Guess what? Our bags showed up, but no carseat. I went to the office and asked them about it. They started questioning ME! Telling me they needed my tags from my suitcases and my ID, etc!! I was SO FREAKING ANGRY! It was after midnight (when we were supposed to get back by ten) and my daughter was so tired, and I was still a bundle of nerves after being worried about being stuck in Seattle an extra day.... Turns out they LOST her carseat!! I said - come on, what do you expect me to do?? I can't just drive home without one and who is open after midnight? They gave us a loaner seat and promised to get it tracked down. It was actually delivered the next afternoon so it was found, but ugh.... what a rotten situation. OH! and I almost forgot, when I was going thru security at Seatac I had a hard lemonade or bottled cooler or something in my backpack and I had forgotten about it. The guy who caught it suggested that I chug it before I go thru lol.

Oh geez. Well glad the guy on the plane was so nice about it, that had to help. But the car seat would have just been the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Can't believe they gave you trouble about that one!

That would be the most recent flight that I took about 3 months ago. I was flying from Columbus, back to Cairo Egypt. The plane in Columbus was delayed because some idiot was drunk on the plane and tore up the bathroom. Several police officers came to take witness statements on the tarmac. No one pressed charges! So the guy just left. Then...our plane needed to be de-iced. Freaking winter! I was supposed to catch my connecting flight in JFK at 4pm, then I was moved to a 6pm. I missed both of these because I did not get to JFK until 7pm. Instead of getting a flight to Cairo, I waited in NY for 4 hours to get on a flight to Amman, Jordan. I was in that airport for another 4 hour delay. Overall I ended up being 10 hours later than expected. The worst part...so much stuff was stolen from my suitcase. Geez I hate traveling sometimes but it cannot be avoided in my case.

Not fun at all. I know I've missed at least one connecting flight due to a delay related to de-icing. And my last one from Sacramento to Burbank was delayed due to snow in Las Vegas. Go figger....

wow, I don't really have any flight delay stories - but man,had I would've been mad had your situation happened to me!Probably scared too , but mad once I found out it was a hoax. The only time I remember a major delay was with waiting for luggage and I was a kid, so I have no idea why we waited 2 hours for our luggage. lol
