Our cat has been in morning for his fellow cat who passed away last week. I was amazed how much he missed him, they didn't even like each other but had lived together for over 12 years. Today he is finally back to his old self. For a week all he did was talk to us when ever he saw us come into a room and beg to be held. Now he is out hunting and only talks when he wants something. Again it is proof to me that we don't know anything about these wonderful animals communication.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I am sure the cat remaining, is missing his fellow cat quite a bit. My two cats do not get along either, but one time, my husband was trying to wash my female cat's tush, she was screaming so loud, our other cat, then starting hissing and clawing at my husband, like he was saying leave her alone. Cats are certainly strange and interesting creatures.

I agree, it's much harder to tell what a cat is thinking than a dog. Thank you

So sorry to hear about your kitty's passing, and your other cat's mourning. I know when my Dad passed away my two cats missed him, they used to go from room to room, looking for him, meowing loudly.

Hi savypat! I was wondering about your ill cat. I'm sorry about the loss. Guess your other cat was mourning. We really don't have a clue about their communication.

I suppose my main point about Cesar was the fact that domesticated pets are taken for granted as tame animals with no wild tendencies. The fact that they came from wild stock thousands of years ago is not lost in their genetics, though. They still have some form of behavior that is linked to their past, regardless of what breed or species they are. Chihuahas have the same pack instinct as wolves, so depending on what original stock cats came from, they may have a form of social order in their daily life. Suddenly losing a member of that order, regardless of the direct relationship, is still difficult. If the other cat had truly been a strong friend, you would have seen a totally different coping mechanism, perhaps pining, crying, diminished hunting and of course seeking you out for affection. To a small extent, he may have been doing that with you. I realize the common housecat may have more in common with less social animals like the cougar or even an ocelot, perhaps the social order developed as they became associated with people as a source of food and safety. There is a definite level of Alphas and Betas, and this implies structure. Who ate first? Who played with a toy first? Those are rhetorical questions, the cats may never have played with toys. Regardless, the survivor is living high on the soft warm bed, since living high on the hog would not apply very well to cats.

Personally I think there is a lot out there that we as humans do not understand nor can comprehend about cats, and the other animals we ever own as pets. But I think they have thoughts and feelings as well even in their sense. For your cat to act like this is proving it as well. Cats can sometimes be one of the Best mood ratioists out there.
