Pop My Cherry

I think that most of us know what the phrase above means, but what actually is a "cherry" in this context. I understand the analogy to popping corks, after all one gets a lovely explosion. But I've never seen a cherry "pop". I am sure that someone out there can help this poor ignorant fish.

I always thought that this phrase was awfully inappropriate to losing ones virginity. I remember my first time and there was nothing going pop, or exploding, and certainly nothing about the experience made me think of cherries at all. If I had to sit and seriously think about it I would guess that when you squeeze a cherry the juice runs blood red in color, at least it does with the black cherry variety. So I guess people compare it to the busting of the hymen which could produce the same kind of effect. Regardless, I always thought it was gross. And saying someone lost their virginity always makes me giggle. You lost it? Really? You had it out admiring it one day and it wandered off and now you can't find it? Honestly.

They really should equate losing virginity more with a balloon than fruit. You know, one pr!ck and it's gone and all that. At least that would make some sense.

Its my belief that the popping of the cherry. Refers to the breaking of the hymen, which lets out some red stuff. I have never thought it to mean anything else at all.

I think this poor ignorant fish needs to spawn! I reckon I could pop a cherry! All I'd need is a tube of silicon, an industrial air pump and a sledgehammer. Why is this reminding me of something else???

My spawning days are gone James. These days I just lie on the river bed and gently rub....... Darn these dreams.

I know the expression but the origins escape me and maybe there is a story to this. We all know that many phrases or expressions have somewhere they came from. I would also be interested to know. Cheers!!

pike,well my answer to this would be,if you had to look at a womens cervix it is actually shaped like a cherry.i use to do a lot of pap smears as that is part of my job in pathology,and when i use to train the new girls i would always refer to the cervix as that cherry,so i suppose thats where you get the phrase pop that cherry,good topic pike.cheers sue
@p1kef1sh (45681)
24 Mar 09
Now that's interesting Sue. Many people think that it is the hymen, but the shape of the cervix makes more sense.

My guess would be that cherry being a fruit was just eventually used to describe the hyman or maidenhood. I've tried to see what I could pull up in terms of etymology, but so far nothing has stood out.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I think that's what it is. A "nice" reference to a fruit that isn't always sweet!

I think popping the cherry expression comes from when the hymen gets torn and there is bleeding which looks like a cherry has been crushed. So to the observer it looks like someone had burst a cherry and you could see the juice flowing out.

Juice = blood?

i always thought cherry was a metaphor for being young, the popping was the actually insertion into a place not yet touched. This was a great question and topic. I really like the different responses, form the silly to the dark
@p1kef1sh (45681)
23 Mar 09
Quite possibly. But cherries are hardly in a dark untouched place. At least not until I have eaten them! LOL.
