'Smartness, flexibility, beauty and intelligence '- that's what secretaries must come with. Do you think that the job of a personal secretary has been much profaned since time immemorial? The fact that most people or organization demand a female secretary, comes with sly speculations and uncalled for apprehension. Many people kind of attach secretive activities with the profession. What is your take on this?

Hi mimpi dear! Yes, there are a lot of connotations that are attached in secretaries especially if they are beautiful and sexy. however, I really don't think the way others think although there are a few whom I personally know have some "secret activities" with the boss. I just can't generalized all. I do know that in every career, whether it is a woman or a man, it always down on the integrity of that person. I believed that there are so many secretaries out there who are respectable in their field of work. Take care and blessings to you. lovelots..faith

You got it right, as always. I think this kind of activities go on everywhere and it all depends o the integrity of the person. I feel, every profession is respectable and people must not generalise. Secretaryship is in fact a job with great sense of responsibility and general integrity, patience, perseverance, and time management. Not all can be good secretaries.

Well Mimpi I think that it is an undeniable fact that the femminity definitely adds beauty to any ambiance. A good looking girl with great capabilities is always welcome by anyone to a grumpy inefficient male. The rest have to be taken care of the people concerned I think. It is a mater of opinion and choice of the employer or employee as both of them are educated adults.

I know what you mean bala. Ultimately it comes down to personal choices and integrity. No one can force an adult to do anything unless in extreme cases where people have to succumb and the advantageous lot take undue advantage. Sad!

To me, I think, the word 'private' or 'personal'makes the problem... I wonder why the 'bosses' do not understand his/her secretary is another human being?

That's a valid point Sreevasu! I think a lot depends on the terminology and the attitude of the bosses.

I don't think there is any wink wink going on over use of the term nowadays, at least not where I live. Part of the reason is that skilled private secretaries are so badly in demand that more respect comes with the position than it once did...perhaps. Anyway a while back a "business man" was someone highly respected, but the term "business woman" meant the female equivalent of a pimp. No longer, I think.

Hey mimpi! I have worked as a secretary and it does depend on who you are working for. I have been a secretary in different types of offices. And yes it does sometimes mean that you are required to keep things confidential. That is a requirement of this type of position. It is nothing to be surprised about. When you are working for someone in a high professional position there are sometimes matters that are of the utmost of importance that you are trusted with and thus it is part of your job to keep these things in the highest of confidence.

Its very important, as you have rightly mentioned with whom we are working with. And keeping secrets and when and how to deliver it, if all is in the dynamic personality of a secretary. Nothing wrong with it. Sadly, here, we find a lot of hush hush going on around the profession, which no way could be accepted.

My take on this!!!!!!!!!mmm OH Mimpi! The word'private secretary' immediately brought only associations of ideas from romances, Mills and Boon aaha![sorry dear I am a diehard fan of these romantic novels!]So, I cannot even understand the word'profane' with regard to this[it is also an issue of my refusal to understand it I guess because then I will rudely be awakened to reality and thrown into the world. ]Fooling apart, I think your statement may be slightly outdated mimpi , what with increasing number of women being private secrataries .Unfortunately people who always are looking for 'juice ' of some kind talk like this about secreatries and also nurses.[an age old habit I guess which with the passage of time has of course been diluted to a great extent-don't you think so?] Another thing is --the demand for female secretaries is also based on their capacity for hard work and dedication[this was what I heard froma an employer himself and I saw that most of his staff were women] There is also nothing wrong in expecting 'Smartness, flexibility, beauty and intelligence]from a private secretary. After all the boss is sure to have a hectic schedule and he would need smartness/quick thinking and presence of mind and intelligence from his secretary.Flexibility and an open mind to adapt would come a long way in catering to the demands and pressures of her job.Is it not? With all this, I think even beauty may also only refer to the good , neat way one presents oneself.Honestly, I do not attach any secretive activity with the profession in real life. Now, mills and Boon is different and it is bound to have all this and a happy ending of course. Probably, too many stories have also contributed to a wrong perception. And it was all the gossip of our old people I guess.I cannot believe that even in educated circles people hold such concepts these days.

You will be surprised to know the real world Kala! I agree that all those attributes have so much relevance in the job profile of a secretary but people kind of play with words. There are far deeper implications in many cases. A pleasant female personality tagged with patience, dutifulness, perseverance and dynamic work management, is a pre requisite for the job. That's how it should be, in ever case. But our society, which is supposed to be growing forward sometimes shows backward trends and I fear that possibility. And Kala, I have grown with M&B and my teen fantasy are primarily an offshoot of the series.

Reputed houses are more careful about this for they just cannot afford to get a bad name. That would affect their image in the industry. Having said this, however, I would say that these things are mutual and morality and ethics have changed grossly over the years and it has to have both the parties agrreing.

Hope you have not grown out of M&Bs.Incidentally, whoa re your favourite authors? In the place I was living earlier, I had a small lendign library stocked with all good M&Bs and I used to advise my customers too, what to pick. I distributed many of my books to my friends and members[these members became such good friends and I used to have long chat sessions with them].Coming back to the point, it is true that I am not too sure of what is happening in the real world but I did think that in organizations of very good repute, there would also be a public image that would get tarnished /say for example in listed companies and all[it may be true in some small companies or some private limited companies-is it not so?Or is it the same everywhere?]

In my country, you aren't permitted to set criteria like this for a "generic" role and this is how it should be in my opinion. The role of a secretary is definitely one of the more stereotyped ones in that most would be female and we all think along these lines genrally; but to set standards such as these is discriminatory! I am constantly amazed by the criteria put forward in job avdertisments here in Egypt and I had the same amazement in India too. Employers ask for people that are unmarried, attractive, "no older than", no children and many other things and this is just not right! The secret activities angle is a new one for me though, I must admit!

SMARTNESS, SKILLS, PRODUCTIVE, AND GOOD LOOKING That is my criteria of selecting secretary and the sequence of it. Should I call it as SSPG?. I think so. I don't used the word for "beauty" because it has vast definition and the interpretation. SMARTNESS The meaning of smartness related to the secretarial job is always job performance takes first in achieving the high level of job quality related to the tasks assigned. An easy explanation is very perfect in sort and solve system, not in the state of indecisive for which one to take first to reciprocate the job flowchart system. SKILLS Secretarial skills is actually the imperative part to anyone who wished to be a secretary(please don't mixed up with company secretary). What is secretarial skills? The high level of public relation tasks in manage, handle and control the both parties interests; boss(superior) and general public; where she works as a mediator interconnecting between both parties. She must remember that, she is actually justly like an "ambassador" to her boss. In other words, she is the color to her boss and the entire scope of management. Sometimes must be creative and innovate in making decision on the spot within her range in her scope of works. PRODUCTIVE In this kind of job and service areas, productive must be defined as efficient. What is an efficient, mimpi1911?. Efficient is small input with great output. Meaning that, her working nature must be in monitor-less but in and at high grade of working ethics control. She really knows about the working perimeter and produce high outcome. GOOD LOOKING She always perform healthy life and style in all angles of her working condition, attitude, ethics, public relation and communication skills. Never take things to the circle of procrastination or mawkish, sluggish, insipid and careless. What I mean is, her personality is her good life style. Whatever she do, really in the state of "attractive" to third party's eyeballs, soothes mind and a peace of mind. MY CONCLUSION One private secretary does practice the "Dos" and "DON'Ts" in work ethics. I think, that's all from me as a brief explanation for what criteria of my selection in choosing for my own private secretary. I believe that other responses able to give and share with you much more perfect answer than mine. Have your nice day, mimpi1911.

Female secretaries are supposed to be more effecient in their work. They are better able to tell all the lies that need to be told to everyone concerned. Female secretaries are in demand not only with male bosses but female bosses too. Females are better in handling new situations that may come up. And females are better at keeping the bosses secrets than their male counterparts.

No wonder female secretaries are in demand world over. And Mayka, you are in an advantageous position of being able to work with a female boss. i am so glad that you know what it takes to be a perfect in the profession.
