If you get hungry for something, what do you do?

I have been craving caramel sauce, or topping for about a month, but I forget to buy it. I was snowed in last weekend, so I looked up recipes. It looked really easy so I made some. It was simple, and yummy. Do you make what you crave?

I like to give a twist to leftovers, if possible. Put a sauce on it or something.

Well, right now I try not to make what I crave. I've been eating super healthy this past week, and I want to keep it that way. And what I crave is usually not so healthy. LOL But there have been occasions when I will make something I crave. I usually have to go to the grocery store when the craving hits because there never seems to me much in my fridge.

I hate to go to the store, so I would have to find something else to take the place. The thing is, it is really better to have a small bit of what you are craving than to eat everything else in the house trying to avoid it.

Usually those trips to the store for cravings are in the middle of the night. One can take only so many infomercials! lol

Yeah, I kept forgetting to put caramel on my list. I have chocolate on hand always. It is nice to be able to get what you want.

Chai tea, pina coladas, and mocha sundaes. I make them myself anyway, but if the ingredients are not on hand, those things are hard to fabricate. But yes, when I was out of pineapple juice I made cranberry coladas instead. Yummers, but had we been out of coconut milk instead, that would have been a predicament!

I bet I know what is a staple in your cupboard. Are there some health advantages to coconut milk? Should I be buying it?

One of the healthful ingredients in coconut milk is Lauric Acid which I guess helps our bodies produce monolaurin which is antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal. So it might prevent the flu! But the reason I keep coconut milk on hand is because I love the flavor. I put a bit in my carrot soup last night, along with ginger and curry and was it ever scrumptious.

I can't make Dr. Pepper, that would be too much fun, then I wouldn't go buy it.

So Dr. Pepper is what you crave most often. Is it the sweet, the fizz, or the caffeine?

If it's something I don't really need to eat, I ignore the craving until my stomach growls like a junkyard dog. Then I punch it, and roll around on the floor in pain. After that, get a Snickers and continue doing what I was doing before.

A Snickers would be something that I would be craving. If I had had one, I would not have made the caramel sauce.

It is shining clear through. I know the less we indulge, the less we crave. I got my caramel craving taken care of and still have some on hand. I could have a spoonful on something now and again.

I usually make what I crave too, providing I have the ingredients. I love caramel sauce too! Try this for a sweet tooth...it comes out caramel, and I put it into a pie crust for caramel pie. It's so good, and it's so simple it's crazy lol. Take one can of condensed milk and put it in a pot. Cover it with water so the top is covered. Get it boiling and then turn it down to simmer and put a lid on it. Every 15 minutes, flip the can over. Do this for 2 hours, and then cool the can before opening. This is SO good, almost like those caramels that are homemade (but I like these better!!) If you're making filling for a premade crust, make 2 cans worth to dump into the shell. When I do a pie with it, I stick it in the freezer to rapid cool it after it's in the shell. Then I add cool whip on top. This is our whole families most favorite sweet tooth pie, and it's soooooooo good. When I crave sweets, this is usually what I make!

Yep, I use the Eagle brand one myself. For regular cooking recipes I might use generic, but for this I keep Eagle on hand. It is yummy! Gosh, it's so delish I could eat it right out of the can lol.

Would that be sweetened condensed milk, like Eagle brand? I have heard of carmelizing that. It does sound yummy.

For me, it would definately depend on the situation. If it is something that I can make and have the ingredients to make it without no real problems, then I will make it. But if it is something that I do not have, or would be easier to go buy it than I go do that instead. Lately, my main craving has been chocolate. I find even with being Diabetic that if I do not have Chocolate when I crave it it makes the craving even worse.

We keep a bag of Dove dark chocolate in the refrigerator, and we eat one each, every night. By having a small amount of it, it will not become a big craving. It is a small serving or less than a serving and the sugars are not so high that they would be an issue. You would have to check it our for yourself, though.

Most of the time, if I'm craving something, I cannot be satisfied completely until I get what I really want. What I hate is when I am hungry for something, yet for the life of me don't know what that something is! That's when I tend to "Graze" looking for the right thing! LOL But I know what you mean about getting what you want. Over the Christmas holidays, I was craving grilled zucchini. (I expecially love it at the Japanese restaurant but this is a luxury) It's hard to find zucchini in December, but I did manage it, though I had to pay mmore than I would have in August or September when it's fresh here in Arkansas!

But that is still less expensive than eating it at the restaurant. I jealous of your healthy craving.

Sometimes, actually often, I can make a healthy version of what I want.I add lots of healthy things to pancakes and breads when I make them. My caramel sauce was made with canned milk instead of heavy cream. Even better would have been a condensed skim milk. I used to have that on hand.

Making healthy versions is a good idea. TBH right now I'm craving fried cheese but I'd have to go home to make it and i hate cleaning the frying pan after so i wont have it!

I usually do, but I don't have much of the talent to cook what I craved, instead, I go to a cafe or a restaurant where I can eat it and see to it that it is affordable, its like a self treat at times, where I crave for something occasionally. But with ice creams or chocolates perhaps I can just buy them in stores where there are available ice cream or chocos I can buy.

i do sometimes only if the ingredients are available for that moment. but sometimes i do crave for fast foods. but still i cannot have them because i dont hve money for buying it. so i rather eat other food rather than the one that i am most craving for. just thinking that it is the same food. lol! i guess its quite easy that way. no hassles too. jhelai

I choose to not spend the money on fast food, it is not that healthy if we eat it all the time. I also do not like to go out when I am tired. I guess you can pretend and tell yourself that it is the food you want when you eat what you have.

If I get a craving for something I always check out the pantry to see if we have the staples to make it before I go out and buy it. Lately this is has been something that I do more often. I do enjoy making things from scratch. They always taste so much better!

Yes, quite often I do. I buy tins of caramel. I used to get the tins of condensed sweetened milk, and boil them, without opening in water, keeping the water covering the can at all times, to avoid explosion. That took two and a half hours, then had to be left to cool before opening. Now, they do the ready made caramel in tins so I buy that. It's ace stuff for banoffi pies and caramel slices. I recall, when my kids were small and I craved something sweet, we would go into the kitchen and make some toffee. We'd make it in a pan, adding some evaporated milk to make it creamy, then pour it into a greased pan and put it in the fridge to cool. That was the best toffee ever. I've also made coconut ice at times too! lol. Brightest Blessings my friend.

You sound like such a good cook. I will have to look up the banoffi pie and see what it is exactly.

I can tell you... it's a biscuit base, with sliced bananas on top of that, caramel to cover the banana and I whip up double or whipping cream and then add about half a mashed banana to it, put that on top, and dredge with drinking chocolate. If you like banana and toffee, you'll love it!

I can't always. But when I can, I do try to. Chocolate, for example, is something I tend to have tp buy. Pizza isn't really easy to make and it takes practice to get any good.
