Have you ever traveled by train in your or another country? If so what was the service like? I especially enjoyed traveling in Australia by train. One of the trains had a club loco car and a shower at the end of each compartment. New Zealand has some very scenic routes that I liked traveling on. From the train window I saw coast and mountains on one of the trips that I did. The USA has a very memorable train service. It got me to my destination five hours late and that was at midnight. Amazingly it gave me a free taxi for half an hours journey.

I love travelling by train!! I am a frequent traveller up to the far North of Malaysia and it takes a grand total of 11-15hrs just to reach my destination from Singapore to Perak. In the past before I knew about the existence of trains, I will always take a coach upwards North. However, when I discovered about trains, I was totally hooked! In the past on the coach, one can't do anything at all for the 13hours. In fact, one can only sleep on the coach for 13 hours before arriving at our destination. However, I fell in love with the train for the total freedom that I have on the train! For the entire 13 hours, I am free to walk around the train, chatting with others, smoke outside of the carriages, eat whenever I want to and sleep at whichever time I feel like sleeping! There is not much service on the Malaysian trains What can one expect? It's Malaysia afterall! THe trains are basic at best. It's not equipped with anything at all save for the toilets! There's a canteen selling bread and microwavable food at the front of the train, and that's it! I believe that there should be shower heads and all those stuff on the better and more expensive trains (namely the night trains). However, I have never sat in those trains before as there is only one train going to where I am going.

I think most countries are great for travelling by train. This applies to the scenery and the companionship on board. In the UK a memorable journey was returning from Lancaster in Lancashire in the north-east of England (north of Manchester, home of the famous football team) to my home at the time in Devon, in the south-west of England. This was early on in the year, during some very stormy, rainy weather. Many train services got cancelled. By the time I got to Bristol, still an hour away from my final destination, the train service ended. Because my train ticket was supposed to have got me to Exeter, like yourself, I was given a taxi to finish my journey. The taxi driver was supposed to have taken me to the train station in Exeter, but instead he offered to take me to my home address! This was very welcome! Trying to think of my most memorable train journey now, it is difficult to think of a particular one. Argentina is a country that comes to mind, where I took a couple of journeys way back in 1990. Since I've learned that many lines have been closed down to save money. One journey was on a narrow gauge track. In one of the middle carriages of the train was a wood stove. This was down in the south of Argentina, south of the big skiing region of Bariloche - Argentina's answer to the Swiss Alps! The other journey was from Buenos Aires towards the north of the country and the great waterfalls on the border with Brazil and Paraguay. Have also taken train trips in Chile, Brazil, Peru, Australia, India and the United States. They were all enjoyable in their own way.

Must admit to a boo-boo! Lancaster in Lancashire is of course in the north-west of England!

there are three public railway here in the Philippines suited in the heart of Manila. the MRT Line 1 and Line 2 then LTR then the National Railway that has a distance of 400 to 500 kilometers. i always use MRT Line 1 since that is near my workplace. its fast but during peak hours its jammed packed like sardines haha while i was reading a travel magazine by Cosmos, ive seen that Austria has a beautiful railway that crosses mountains i had never experience such a train ride like that. i would also like to try riding the trains in Japan and China. they are quite fast haha

I would love to visit the Philippines one day and try out a train traveling from Manila. I have traveled on a few trains in Asia like from Malaysia to Singapore. The sleeping bunks were quite short I noticed. i have heard Japan has pricey fares so a one or two week rail pass would be idea. I loved visiting Salzburg in Austria. Yes, the scenery is really beautiful. However fares are expensive so a rail pass would be a good idea. I would love to travel train from Moscow to Beijing one day. Going to China would be fascinating. Thanks for your wonderful response.

I live in The Netherlands at this time and I like to travel by train over here. The service is usually pretty good, as a general rule the trains are on time and you can usually get from one destination to another without too much hassle. That is to say, that there are a Lot of trains going to a Lot of different destinations, even little villages some times...although not mine!! but that is unusual! So you can usually make your way even to a small city with maybe only one or 2 train changes. And needless to say the country itself is beautiful but of course that has nothing to do with the train service!

er,traveling on train?well,it seems a painful sensation for me.you konw ,my hometown lies in Yun nan Province in the southwest of China where are mountainous .so you can guess how slowly the train goes in such a plateau.maybe slowness means enough time and chance to enjoy the sceneries outside from the train window.however,so many people squeez in the limited room the moment i go by train .so,how wistfully i want to experience a really trip comfortably in a quiet atmosphere..

It is fascinating to hear about where you live and how mountainous the area is. The train must be incredibly slow so it would be great to look out of the window. It is a shame that the train is so crowded. I hope that you will go on a different train line one day that is quiet and far less busy. Thanks for your excellent response.

I have traveled by train in a couple of different countries, but Italy is my favourite place. I loved watching the mountains from the train. I have traveled from the east to the west by train and I have traveled from the north to the west, I really enjoyed seeing the different parts of the country from the train. It is a lot cheaper to travel by train in Italy than in my own country and I enjoyed traveling a long distance without paying a lot of money. In my own country (Denmark) train tickets are expensive and the trains are often delayed.

My favorite country to travel by train so far has been Italy. I started my trip in Rome and took the train to Florence and then to Venice and both legs of the journey were absolutely breathtaking. I love taking the train when I travel. I find it to be relaxing and enjoyable, and a great way to see new places. I like to take in my surroundings as I pass them, rather than just fly over them!

I had my first experience with passenger trains in 2002 on my first visit to Romania. I traveled from Bucharest to Cluj-Napoca on CFR and I loved it! I especially enjoy taking a long trip in the sleeping car. The gentle rocking of the train is very soothing. I wish that I had more opportunities to travel this way!

Netherlands had a very good train service. fast, smooth and reasonably priced. Everything that British trains aren't.

I think Europe has a world class train. I watched a show that features the train of Europe. I think traveling by the train there is relaxing because of the view of the places and the ambience of the facility of the train there. There some available beds for the travellers which is good if you want comfort when you are travelling. The tranportation to another country is not a problem because you can ride a train like if you want to go to France to Germany.
