What All Can A MINI Laptop Do?

I am looking to purchase a mini laptop next month and I would like to know more about them. There are seven people to one computer where I live now, and there is no room for my desktop. So I would like to purchase a mini computer because I rarely get the chance to be online for any real amount of time. This week my sister's triplets are off for the Easter vacation. They are in advance placement classes and they get a lot of homework, so they have been on the computer for hours at a time. My oldest niece told me that a mini computer does not have a cd drive. I do not need all of that. I simply want to be able to get online and do my thing. I also wanted to know if I needed a phone line for a mini laptop? There is a landline in the house, but it is hooked up to the only computer and I use a cell phone most of the time.

I don't know anything about the mini-laptop. When you're looking, make sure the keyboard is big enough, play with the so-called mouse and make sure you can use it (it's usually on the keyboard). I have a regular laptop which has the keyboard mouse and a separate mouse (thank goodness, cuz I can't deal with that keyboard thingie). A friend who only has a cellphone is hooked up to the Internet using some kind of card that acts as a modem. The "card" goes into some slot on the computer. Hope you find something you can do your thing with.

I was trying to find a good deal online, but I guess it would be best if I go into a store to really get a fel for what I am purchasing. Thanks for your response.

I got myself an asus eeepc mini laptop. This bring help to me on doing my online making job. We are three people using one desktop pc and now i did not wait for my turn in using it. I can go online anytime i wanted too. And it also so handy that i can bring it anywhere. We don't apply for another phoneline for the internet connection, we just buy a router with wi-fi so we can use internet with multiple user.

Hi rozie37, I think before buying a mini laptop, you should try to search it on the net about laptops to avoid regretting it later on. I am also planning to buy a new mini laptop or some called it net book for it is very handy and light weight. I have my personal choice the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, ASUS’s latest netbook offers a much-improved keyboard, excellent battery life, and a slightly faster processor for a very good price. I really want to buy it but sadly it is not yet available here in my country. So i think i have to wait until it is available already.

Be warned they do not have a dialup connection for regular land line dialup unlike most computers that come standard with it built in. Wireless is a builtin function. The screen is small but definitely usable . I unfortunately never actually got to use one on a day to day basis but a friend was considering one for a dialup connection but could not get a netbook with one on without spending a lot to get the addons necessary. He finally got a 14 inch regular notebook with XP that was off lease so he got it cheap at 199$ and was quite satisfactory for his needs. The specs were better than the Asus EEE and cheaper. No CD means installing programs can be difficult and of course recording to CD or DVD is out the window. I certainly would use it for surfing, online banking, etc, but the specs are somewhat limited but even so would suite 90% of the users out there. Personally if I was buying new and it was my only computer I would add another 200$ to the price and get a bigger laptop.

Oh no, I do not mean dial-up. I have not had that kind of service in over three years. If I had to go back to dial-up, I would just stick to sharing the home computer. Dial-up is much to slow for my taste.

I recently Picked up a HP Mini , Its basically a netbook and that's what you are looking for . Initially , I was a bit skeptical , but when I got the piece in hand , I was pleasantly surprised ! Its a small laptop, with a 10.2" screen , superb finishing , a super cute gadget by HP ! It was feature packed , pre loaded with Windows XP , 8) GB Hard Disk , 1 GB Ram , Intel Atom Processor , 2 USB ports , 1 LAN Port , Wifi , Bluetooth and a good battery life . I thought the computer would be slow , but it wasnt ! As you mentioned , it doesnt contain an optical drive for CDs and DVDs , so , installing some applications was initially a problem , but I managed to get them done using a pendrive . Ofcoure , since there is no optical drive , you cant watch movies from DVDs :) But otherwise , all applications like Office 2007 , Adobe Acrobat , Norton 360 and other applications worked flawlessly and extremely fast ! i Had underestimated the potential of the HP mini initially , but now , that I have it and use it , I am a very proud Owner ! I connect online using my DSL Lan Line , and its super fast . It can also connect via Wifi or using a USB modem . I am not sure if you will need another Line in your house to go online , perhaps , using a Wifi Connection would be a good idea . Similar netbooks are available from Lenovo and other brands , but I think HP mini is the best , when it comes to looks , features and mobility ! Its like carrying a Paperback Novel , only 1.2 Kgs including the Battery ! A superb Pc , take it and you will love it ! If you need more info , just me know know :) Happy to help .

That says most of it! Netbooks are limited in power (smaller, slower CPUs), storage (250Gb drives are pretty standard) and expansion slots, but otherwise they're like normal laptops without a CD/DVD drive. Virtually all of them have WIFI, so if you're using a wireless router you should be fine with one connection (assuming your ISP allows that). If you're on a cable, check the netbook has an ethernet slot! There's tons of good sites with info. netbook-reviews.com, liliputing.com and so on. A little research goes a long way in this area: some are really bad, others (like the HP Mini) are remarkably good!

While I am replying to this discussion, I am using a mini laptop I just purchased just recently (about 2 weeks ago). It is a Lenovo S10 Ideapad, and I bought it online after my old huge laptop crashed. Honestly, I find that this new laptop has all the functions that I need; the only thing that is missing (like you mentioned in your discussion) is the CD drive. As I only need the laptop mainly for surfing the internet and using the word processors, it is more than enough for me. Some additional features of the laptop is that it has a built-in webcam and it has a 160GB hard drive, which is just awesome. Anyway, just observing my mini laptop, there is a slot available for phone line plug-in for cable internet surfing. But my laptop has also a WiFi detector, which means that wireless networks are fine for me too. With these two to choose from, I guess surfing the internet is not an issue if you buy a mini laptop. Well, all the best in your quest to buy a mini laptop, and I hope the one you buy will be perfect for your use!

Go for an hp mini laptop. I think its great as a netbook. I forgot its model but I do know that if you want to buy a netbook. It should consist a 1 gigabytes or 2 gigabytes ddr2 667mhz. A netbook processor is fine as long it hast 1.0 ghz or more. Its hard disk drive for storage for data and file should have 160 gigabytes storage capacity or more. HP is a brand worth buying for in a netbook buying situation.

If you get an acer aspire, it can do ANYTHING a regular laptop can. I have an acer aspire, and I love it. Its only about 350, and it has 120 gigs, a memorycard slot (in case you use a digital camera) and a built in webcam. One thing that it does not have is a cd drive, which I bought separately from the laptop for a hundred bucks. 6 months later, and I have only used it once. If you have access to wireless internet, you do not need a phone line. There is a jack for a phone line in the side, though.

Hi there,is the mini laptop that you mention means netbook? If yes,i am now using one and i feel that's it good as it is light in weight and carrying it outside is very convenient. But the problem is that, the screen is small abit and keys are pack together. But it all depend on the size of the netbook that you are buying.I am currently using the ASUS EEEPC 701 so everything is quite small actually. But i can said the whole experience of using the netbook is good and you may actually consider buying netbook if all the requirements suit you.Happy mylotting :D
