Having the TV on when company is over

Depending on the company, we usually have the television on. If it's family then the TV is on for a football game or the news, even kid's shows. If we just have another couple over or a few people without kids then we'll just sit around and talk and the TV won't be on. Do you have the TV on when company is over?

i'd rateher not. it's too distracting. i wouldn't let my grandson turn it on today when we were eating lunch. he or my son usually turns it on soon as they get here. i usually have the radio on instead of thrtv.

Yes, sometimes it can be distracting. Especially if it's too loud.

Yes we do have the tv on when we have company but the only programmes that are ever on it in the day are cartoons for the kids. I do not think I have ever turned the tv off when I have had company over, I turn it down but never off. My Grandma always used to turn it off when she had company and I used to get so bored because I was never allowed to get involved in the "adult" conversation and so had to just sit there quietly!!!

I know how you feel. I went through days like that too growing up.

It is according to the company. The tv is usually playing in the background most of the time.

oh yea.i don't think the tv ever goes off in my house, ever. the only way they knew a tree fell over in my yard once is because it pulled out the cable on the way down.i wish i were kidding.

I have the TV on when company is over most of the time because they can watch something at awkward moments when no one is talking or start a new discussion about what's on TV. Some people don't like to talk, so they would have the choice to watch TV. It can also get boring when someone's over for a long time and they're just staring at the walls. But I make sure something appropriate is on, like the news, sports, or a good TV show.

That's true. It is good for those awkward moments of silence.

I find that very good because this allows to talk about something that they are watching (tv shows, sports etc)

LOL. If it was up to my husband, we would have the tv on at all times. We usually keep it off when company is over though and just sit around and talk also.

No, otherwise they will sit and watch it while drool rolls down their chin. I'm an outside person when the sun is up but during the evening I'll flip on the tube for some background noise.

Not when there is a large group but let's say it's a holiday and I have been cooking and basically entertaining all day and everyone else leaves but a few family members who linger with each other to talk in the kitchen...heck yeah i plop down and turn on the telly. Sometimes you need a break too. I's say it would be rude if company comes over and that's all you do is watch tv.

It really depends on who is over. If my mom and extended family is over someone always has the television on because the kids will be playing the wii or xbox 360 or one of the other game systems. My dad always likes to flip through our channels and see what's on, I think he is addicted to television LOL If we have friends over then we normally do not have it on. Having 5 televisions it seems there is always one on somewhere in the house.

whenever we have visitors at home, we always asked them first if they want to watch tv or not.. mostly they say no, so we keep the tv off. if they want to watch tv i let them hold the remote and search for the channel they want to watch. my personal choice is to keep the tv turned off while there is a visitor so we can really talk. happy mylotting!

Well usually the TV is ALWAYS ON because my house never fails to have people in it everyday who watches the television..So when people come, the TV will be on and we'll let it stay that way so that things wouldn't be awkward for them and they can like focus their attention on the tv if things ever do get awkward...hah ^_^
