Does sugar turn your normally sweet child into someone else?

My daughter is a sweet thoughtful kid for the most part. She loves everyone and is very giving. Today being Easter she and her cousins got their fair share (and more) of sweet stuff. As parents we do limit her intake of sugar. Probably more than most. And with good reason. She had more today than usual. By the end of the afternoon, she was grumpy and spoke back at her Aunt. Normally this isn't the case. I know it was the sweets. Do you limit sugar with your kids?

My daughter is crazy into sweets and as parents we try to limit her amount but there are times that we have it in the house for our occasional sweet tooth and she is like a bloodhound with it seriously she sniffs the stuff out no matter how good we hide it. Then there are also times when she gets it in school or at friends parties and she has the stuff gone before we get a chance to get it and separate it so she doesn't try and eat it all at one time. I do believe though that the sweets can affect their moods because I know on these days that we are able to manage what she intakes then she isn't so grumpy but on the days that I feel she has had too much then she is a monster :) I also know that she seems to be more sluggish when she has a bit of candy.

I totally know what you mean..The sweetest children can turn into turbo kids with sugar then when the buzz starts wearing off it can make them a bit cranky, whining, and other things and my little sister is right there at the top of the list when she has to much sweets even juices that have alot of sugars can cause it if she drinks to much of it. At these times it is very trying to keep a hold on our own tempers when they refuse to say sorry because of the mood they are in and hurt others feeling it makes us mad but there isn't much we can do since it is our faults for letting them consume so much even on special occasions.

While I try to curb the amt of sugar intake my children consume - I have not really noticed any behavioural problems when they take in too much. Maybe your dd has an alergic reaction of some sort?

Sugar does not really affect my kids too much. They are hyper little things all day no matter what. Sugar does not turn them into grumps either. I don't let them go too overboard on the sugar, but they do get it on a regular basis.

We try to limit the sugar our kids ingest. I think a lot of times, however, it can be the over-stimulation of family and friends over that can get to a kid after awhile, too.

My daughter is 17 years old now. she used to get wound up on sugar though and it made her very hyper. I had to limit the sugar also.

Hello ersmommy. It is an interesting fact that I have learned today from this informative discussion of yours that the overdose intake of sugar could change one into someone else. Well, I have noticed this on my son, but right now my teen son does not seem to like sugar as he used to as a small kid. I think that I need to let my students know about it as quite a few of my girl students eat sugar a lot. Thank you for the discussion, friend. Happy parenting.

yes, we do try as parents ourselves, we have the kids drink low sugar Capri Sun juice drinks alot, if they do drink soda, it is Diet. When we have baked goods such as donuts, brownies, they get just a small amount and the rest gets hidden from them (they sneak into it if was in open). Our kids get really hyper if they get too much sweets.
