Ants and Mice..........YUCK!!!

Someone on my friends list on another site started a post about hating birds and how they were living in her house. It made me think about how we have ants and mice living in our home. We live in a duplex and the neighbor doesn't seem to have the same problem. We have tried mouse traps and we have a cat. We can't use poison because of the cat. If the mice eat the poison then the cat eats or bites the mice, he could die too. Regular traps aren't working. The cat kills about one a week and leave's it for me as a gift. We also have ants. The little annoying one's. We find them everywhere on the first floor. Laundry room, kitchen, bathroom, living room, by the front door, etc. Last summer, we had the BIG black one's upstairs in the bathroom but never saw them anywhere else. They seem to have disappeared on their own though. We have the little one's all year round and, again can't use poison because of the cat. He might get into it and get sick or die. We've tried to use the ant baits and Terro baits. They're supposed to be impenetrable by cats. They don't seem to work either. Does any one know how to safely get rid of mice or ants? Is there something that we can put outside around the house? Is there something that is pet safe that we can use inside? We can't afford an exterminator and I'm not calling the landlord. I don't want to deal with them unless I HAVE TO. Oh, I also need them to be baby safe. I have a 9 month old that puts everything in her mouth and a 2 year old. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

now, ants, I heard if you take boric acid and some mint jelly, and then you mash them together, getting just as much boric acid into a little bit of mint jelly then you push the stuff into straws and lay them where the ants go, the ants will eat the stuff and die, and because its in the straw its less likely for the child or the cat to get into them, since you do have a child, you might want to put them under things she can't get under or above where she can get. However, because it is just boric acid, it won't hurt child or cat, and it can even kill the mice....

how well i know ants are vicious insects especially ants, one night i awaken to find ants in the bed with me biting the crap out of me. and their bites are very painful and they itch and burn.so i advise don,t eat in your bedrooms are any other part that you don,t want ants to enter.ants can and will enter the home no matter how clean your home is.do not be fooled ants is no joke they will bite the crap out of you, the smallsest ant hurts.so they are on the way get perpared for them because you will have to do battle with them it,s time for them to store food for the winter so beware.

Thanks. I can't use raid because of the baby and the cat. I'm not sure if boric acid is safe for them or not but I will be looking into that.

They avoid the traps. The fricken mice are too smart. I have put them all over the kitchen where the cat and baby can't get them bu7t they never get caught in them. I'll look into the chalk idea though.

I can think of nothing that would be safe around the cat or more importantly the babies that would work sweety! Since I am answering from email I do hope that someone else has already suggested something that may help! Hugsxxxx

I suffer the same problem in our house. From time to time mice would loiter around our room or in the kitchen. Its very annoying and dangerous to health. We live in a rocky place so perhaps this is the reason why we are often visited by mice. Well, whenever I see them, I usually buy a insect stick pad. The one you use for flies. I place them on the usual route the mice go and voila, I got them. Perhaps you should try it to.

I don't like the sticky pads because they scream when they get stuck. If I use traps I don't want them to suffer. I'd rather kill them fast and not suffer. I don't want to hear them screaming.

Even I am ants and mice at my place. They are troubling me a lot and so we are killing them. Ants, I am trying to stop them by spraying some mosquito spray over them and using the ants lines. As far as rats are concerned I am trying to kill them by using rat kill and hitting them personally when got such an opportunity. But you have a difficult situation because of kids. I think you should call pest control.

I can't afford pest control otherwise I would call them. I'll just try all the idea's that I've gotten here and on my other site. Thanks.

I gleaned these from an article I saw: How to get rid of ants ? (1) Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it and take it "home." Since they can't digest it, it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have to worry about pets or small children being harmed! (2) It is said that ants never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever the ants tend to march. See for yourself. I've also heard something about basil leaves. Best wishes on getting rid of them!

Thanks so much. I'll have to try both of them and they'll be safe for the kids too.
