Have you ever mixed up your medicines?

My wife had an ear infection recently and after three days of feeling drowsy she thought that it was the effect of the antibiotics when she noticed that she mixed up the antibiotics with the pain killers. So she made three days taking pain killers instead of antibiotics. Have you ever mixed up your medicines?

That is easy to do. That is why it is always best to make sure since some pills look alike. I am dealing with a ear infection right now and it is not fun.

I had that bad experience few years ago. I had running nose and instead of taking the pill to stop the runny nose, I took a different one. The effect of taking the wrong pill landed me in the consultancy room of a clinic. I don't even know what pill I mistakenly took but I felt dizzy and had fainting spell afterwards.

I have had that happen to me too, I forget if I have taken my medicine and I will take it again and then I realize I have take the same medicine twice in one day. I have to find a way to make me remember which one I have taken. It is easily done, mixing your medication. I really hope she is doing fine, and it didn't affect her badly in any kind of way.

Oh my goodness! The poor thing. I hope it didn't affect her getting over the ear infection too much. I almost never take medication and only rarely ever need a prescription.

No, that has never happened to me. My husband and I are both almost blind, and we keep our medications in certain places, so that we will know what they are, even without seeing the labels. Because of our poor vision we have to be very careful about doing stuff like tat.

I have not. It seems that here, they make the pills of different shapes and or colors so you can tell what the type is. The main problem is missing a dosage, or taking it at the wrong time. Of course, with me, that is no worry since I only have to take one pill and I can miss it for a day or so, but with my husband he has to have his medicine around the same time as he takes three pills.

So far, I have no problem with any given medicine. I do check the prescription before I take my medicine. To help my mum with her prescription as she is illiterate, she recognises by the color and type of medicine. Alternatively we just pack the dosage in several packs and she to take one pack each time.

mostly i take them carefully, but it happens that some day i skip some of them or may take the same tablet that i had taken in the morning...i take only 2 vitamin tablets regularly and when i see the uneven number in the packet then i come to know that i have gone wrong, mostly i am regular on average.

Oh my goodness, ronaldinu...that is a mistake of ginormous proportions, all could have lead to serious problems! I do pray that she is O.K.? And I guess the pain-killers masked the pain, so she felt that she was getting better! I certainly hope that she has returned to her proper meds, and she is having no side affects from taking them instead of the course of antibiotics! I am wondering if a visit to the Dr. is not in order, as her ear infection may have progressed to the point where new meds are required! Cheers!

Not exactly, meds but I was in a hurry one morning & gargled with my daughter's acne cleanser which was the exact same color as my mouthwash. It was not a good start to the day. I once also grabbed a can of comet cleanser and poured some in my mouth before realizing that it was not the can of gingerale that was sitting right next to it. Don't worry....I'm much more careful these days.

I took my dog's medicine once because the pills were side by side on the counter and I forgot which one was mine and which one was his. He got my steroids I was taking for a bad case of bronchitis and I took his phenobarbital. I knew only because my son saw it and thought I would take the proper pills and didn't stop me in time. Luckily, I was on the lowest does of steroids and Gus' phenobarbital is also a very low dose!

I sure have! I take many medicines and two of them look almost identical, but only one of them I take on a daily basis. The other is to control diarrhea, which I get in bouts because of having IBS and only take occasionally. The one I take on a daily basis is for my panic disorder syndrome. I was taking what I thought was my daily pills for 5 days before realizing I had been taking the Lomotil, the one for diarrhea!!! I was WONDERING why I felt really strange and hadn't paid a visit to the grand throne in awhile!!! But, once discovering the boo boo, I corrected it immediately and began to drink an AWFUL LOT of apple juice and water! It was over a week before I, umm, had to go, you know.

No, I avoid taking meds as far as I possibly can. I'm a great believer in herbal remedies and don't have any problems with muddling them up. Your wife did well though to manage with just pain killers. Brightest Blessings.

Hi Ronald, I never did the same yet. I am taking much care with medicine especially I have to given the same to my kids. But when I read your discussion I remember about my brother's son now 6 years of age. Two years ago he had the habit of swallowing medicine without knowing others at home. Once my sister-in-law brought medicine (antibiotics) for him and given the exact dose and kept the remaining medicine bottle in the cupboard. After she left the place he swallowed the whole medicine till the bottle gets empty. When it noticed after sometimes she got surprised to see the empty bottle and asked so he agreed that he drank it. Fortunately nothing serious happened he was drowsy for long time and vomited much.

One thing to keep in mind when taking medicines is that some vitamins and herbal supplements that are freely purchased over the counter can interfere with prescription medication. For example, to combat mild depression some women take St John' Wort tablets which can be bought from a health food store without prescription; St John's Wort have been known to reduce the efficiency of the oral contraceptive pill; now that could result in something really depressing!

Yeah! Pretty bad once too. I had just woken up from a six hour nap around seven in the evening once, so I wasn’t tired at all and decided to take some allergy medicine and some headache medicine, since it usually makes me tired and I knew I wouldn’t be this time since I had just gotten so much sleep and felt very rested. I was still kind of out of it though from my extreme amount of sleep (I was in college) that I took one Benadryl and one then forgot I had mixed my prescription with my antidepressant to condense and keep things convenient (again, I was in college), and mistakenly took one Benadryl and one antidepressant instead of two Benadryl’s, and got very high. I have never been high besides that but I knew I was high. I’m not gonna lie, although I didn’t, it was tempting not to mix them again ha, until I ran out.
