Cheque books

As we all know cheque books are way out of fashion and nearly ended now. While out shopping I went into four shops and all said they didn't take cheques anymore, which was fine as I didn't wish to write any. My question is...... can you remeber where you wrote your first ever cheque? Ie the shop, even how much etc. I wrote my first cheque in a Readicut shop (you buy a piece of canvas with large holes in it, a hoop and short pieces of yarn to thread through with the hook in a special way.. a big thing in the 80's). It was a small shop and I knew the girl who served in the shop, I actually chose this shop espically to write my first chegue as if I had any problems etc I knew this girl would help me etc, I actually went to school with her but she was in a couple of years above me. I think my cheque was for about £4 and the year must have been about 1981/2. And no before you ask I never finished the kit and can't remeber the design. So please tell me yours. Anne18

Sorry, I can't remember my first cheque, it was so long ago (more than 30 years). I also can't remember the last cheque I've written, but it was probably just a VOID cheque to expedite automatic deposit of my paycheque for the last election I worked.

I don't ever remember writing a cheque out in a shop or store, but maybe I did in the days before credit cards. I only ever write cheques now to pay bills, but most of those I pay by direct debit or with online banking. I do remember Readicut. I made a nice rug from a kit I bought by mail order. A small craft shop near to where I live still sells rug making kits, but they are quite expensive. I seem to remember Readicut were not cheap.

I think the very first check I wrote was to a friend's mom as she was our landlord. I believe it was for $300.00. I don't remember exactly when it was but it was in the summer after graduation I believe. I try to block that out, lol. I'm not friends with the girl anymore and the landlord wasn't exactly what I expected.

Yes i remember the same, i have made my first cheque for my College Fees, when i was in the first year, my dad deposit the money to my account, and ask me to pay my examinations fee to my university. For this reason, I have made my first cheque for my exam fees, from that onwards, i have made all my fees to my college paid by my cheque only. Other than that i have not used the cheque leaf for any other purposes.. because i have a Debit card, so, if i need cash, i will insert the Debit card into the ATM machine and with draw the cash and use the same. And also moreover my sister and my uncle used to provide the enough pocket money, Infact i have saved some of those pocket money and save the same in my bank account. Nice discussions/thought.. Have a good day.

I have written over 20,000 checks since I started. I remember we were taught in English class how to write checks. I sure don't remember my first but I bet I was really nervous about trying something new. I am so glad I only write a few now.

i dont remember where i wrote my first one but all the places i go to still takes them , every once in awhile i still write them because swipping your card to much can cause people to steal your account numbers i had that happen twice and when i talked to the banks they said to much swipping makes it easier for people to steel the information and use your card numbers.

i'm not really a cheque person and i hardly write a cheque... i usually use my debit/credit cards to pay for my daily expenses and internet banking to pay for my bills... the place that i am working now still accept cheques but we have to do a series of verification process with the third party company to verify it... take care and have a nice day...

That first check was so long ago that I cannot recall to whom it was written or the amount, but I think I chiseled it on stone!

I think the first ever cheque that I wrote was when i got my Visa card in 2000, and I had to write a cheque to pay it off. Now I pay all of my bills on line, and the only time i write cheques anymore are to pay the rent (I write one to the landlady) and I give my husband a cheque to take to the bank and cash, to bring me back the money. This eliminates me having to go to the bank when he is going anyway.

cheques - Almost never used nowadays!
Very few shops accept cheques nowadays. I dont remember when I first wrote a cheque at all! i use a cheque to drop off whatever my Credit card amount is due at the bank i also send cheques to Worldvision and some donations etc. I paid for my car with a cheque - the dealer accepted it only because he knew me well!

I'm intrigued by the Readicut shop! Even with your explanation, I'm not quite sure what it was. I was around in the 80's but don't remember anything about canvases with holes, lol! Was it a drawing kit? Why did it have holes? (Sorry, slightly OT!) I can't remember when I did my first cheque. I can't remember owning a cheque book before university, but I might be remembering wrong. If it was at university then I probably used my first cheque to pay my accommodation fees or something like that. That was in the '90s.

Just saw from the post above that it was a rug-making kit. That sounds cool. But I was the same with craft kinds of things, I used to start them but not finish them. Shame really!

Hi anne! Oh my goodness! I honestly don't remember where I wrote my first check to! I paid some bill, but have no idea! It might have been my rent bill or utility or something! But, it was way to long ago for me to even remember! And you are so right about them now being obsolete! I don't write too many any more! Only to my landlord! That and so far my utility bill! All others I pay online! I know that I can pay the utility bill online too! But, my landlord still wants a paper check! That is the last paper check that I write!

I think it was when I bought a short wave portable radio. That was back in the early 70s and I paid the first installment and I charged the rest and paid it off in 90 days time. Now I only write a check to pay for my tithes each month and also to pay one bill, but I could just as well do the latter through a debit card. I kept the radio for ten years and finally threw it out so someone else can use it. Besides the reception was not that good =could not get Europe from Vancouver, B.C.

Cheques have almost become obsolete anymore haven't they? I wrote my first cheque for rent in the second apartment I lived in. The first building actually accepted debit cards which was very convenient but my second building was cash, cheque or money order. I wasn't comfortable packing hundreds of dollars in cash around so I ordered cheques for the first time. I used them for rent for the rest of my renting days and now I write one cheque a month to transfer money to a different bank and that's pretty much it.

I have issued a issued a cheque book but i never issued a cheque to anybody yet. As i had to get provident fund of mine through a call center company and there was a new rule to submit a cancelled cheque with documents. So i handed it to them & have never used the cheque book since.
