This looks like my Jack Russell Terrier. She is soooooo cute but boy, is she a mess! Her name is "Prissy", by the way.
Is there a way I can teach her not to make tears in the sofa any more? I forgot to ask this in my discussion while ago. As I said, she likes to sleep on this sofa. Kathy.

I never have learned how to teach her not to tear up the sofa any more but I've been told that would be very hard to do. In the meantime, I bought some black tape (the sofa is black leather) to fix the tear and I'm hoping it works. I'm not sure if it's the right kind. This is not her picture, btw, but she looked a lot like this when I first got her. This si just a picture I found on mylot. Kathy.

I am not very experienced with dogs. I do know that Jack Russel Terriers are high energy and highly intelligent. Did Prissy tear the sofa on purpose? Or just accidentally because of her behavior? I have heard of putting double sided tape on things to get animals to keep their paws off, because they hate the feeling of it. I do not know if that would help. I do not know if you should just cover the sofa so she would not have a chance to make a hole.

Thank you for your response. I think she might have done it accidentally because of her behavior. She's very hyper. I've never heard of using double sided tape but I might consider this. I would like to fix it in a way that it won't look so obvious. Another one of my mylot friends is going to send me some kind of tape that she uses to repair furniture with. also, another mylot friend suggested getting a leatherette to cover it with, if you've ever heard of those. I never have. You have to get that from a hardware store. The first hardware store I went to said that they didn't have those. The girl at the register thought Home Depot might carry them so I might try them. As far as covering it, I don't know. The girl who's going to send me the tape suggested covering it with a blanket. When I first got Prissy, I put a blanket in the kennel I had for her at the time so she wouldn't have to sleep on a cold, concrete floor. She just about tore it to shreds! It was an old blanket, anyway. I just threw it away. She's a mess, buddy! Another mylotter suggested covering the tear with shoe polish. This works quite well but it doesn't last. Kathy.

The double sided tape would not be for a repair, but to train Prissy to stay off the sofa.

Hi GardenGerty! Your response never did show up in my email and I just happened to see it when I was replying to cbeee3's pm below.
I don't know where else Prissy would sleep in this case unless she sleeps on one of the black leather chairs in there. She does that sometimes. I think she likes to change up occasionally. The mylotter who said she was going to send me the leatherette never did do it so I don't know what to expect from her. I know she's had a lot of problems, though. I did buy some black tape but I'm not sure if it's going to work or not. I'll just have to try it. Kathy.

Well, I hope by now you have gotten more of this situation worked out with Prissy, but Jack Russels are definately interesting dogs. Some friends of ours had one and in a lot of ways I think they are smart dogs. Maybe you will have to teach him that this is unacceptable by spanking him when you catch him trying to do things like this, and find him other things that he can scratch on instead.

Thank you for your response. She's not as bad about chewing on things like she was when she was younger. I have spanked her several times for unacceptable behavior but that doesn't seem to work. I've gotten her several chew toys and that seems to help. I haven't been able to find any leather repair kits anywhere in this town. Somebody at church tonight told me that I might could call a local furniture store here in town and ask them what I can do. They sell leather furniture there. Yes, they are very smart dogs and cute but they are very hyper. Btw, she's a female. I noticed you kept calling her a "he", "him", etc. I know you didn't mean to, though, lol
