Interstate or side roads?

United States

When I am traveling I tend to take the most direct route. It gives me a sense of security that I have very few turns to remember. I also feel as if the interstate gives me a fast and direct path even if side roads are shorter on the map, mileage-wise. How do you feel about it? When making a long trip do you prefer to stick to the interstate system or would you rather plot out a shortcut using state, county and other minor roads?

I like the back roads. I can see the sense of security but I can't handle the stress other drivers instill in me and the stupidity either. Other drivers can be very idiotic and I can't handle the stressfullness. My uncle used to always drive the back roads. Got there sooner and in better shape. If I am taking a long trip I think staying on the main interstate makes sense. But locally I take the back roads.

I tend to take the interstates, but my husband and I love to get out on a warm summer day and drive the backroads. You can see so many interesting sites and do so many things when you get off of the interstates.
