Have you ever worked for a company that closed in front of your face?

Right now, there are a lot of employees suffering from closing companies. I am currently employed since I accepted the offer of my previous company to a voluntaty resignation. One reason I decided to accept the offer is the fear of repeating my experience 12 years ago, where the company suddenly closed in front of my face. Although there was a nottice, it was only two weeks before and nobody was prepared. Has this also happened to you before or recently? What have you learned?

I am not in the same situation and not even in the past that I experienced that..But, lately, I heard that the first company I was working back in 2000 just close few weeks ago and I was so sad for my friends who are working there....I am sure they were not ready too and some of them got kids! I hope they will be able to find another good job!

No I haven't had this kind of experiences yet. I am working for my first company actually. I joined it about half a year ago right after I graduated form college. Recently it isn't running smoothly but I think we can still get through all the difficulties. I am sorry about what had happened to you but I hope I'll never have to go through this.

Well yes, if not exactly in front of my eyes but definitely by the time I left. It was my first job and I was quite loyal to the company. So even when the signals were coming from the veterans about the impending danger, I took no note and hanged on, hoping for the crisis to pass over. In my naiveté and blind loyalty, I wouldn’t believe anything could go wrong. So when it did, it was a bolt from the blue. By the time I found another job and left, the shutters were down with only a handful left behind to do the final cleaning up. What have I learned? Well nothing much really coz the company I am in right now, I’ve been here for 10 long years. Actually I am quite a lazy loyal type who wont leave until kicked on the butt.

I so sad of hearing your story. I had never experience to worked in a company and closed. My experience is I am the one resigning for greener pasture. I have earned a trust from my employer and I can talked to them whatever decision I made. I don't know if this will happen to my present employer. Moreover, there are many companies closing because of recession.

Hello fatherblogger, I have not experianced that so far because I have worked only 3 years. But it sounds very sad and I think no body would like face it. There's badly crisis all over the world, many people lose their job even they have kids need to be take care..... But I believe, a real person who own real skills would not be faired as all bosses need someone to help them to make it better. Hope we can beat this crisis soon!

Yes, in fact it was my first full time employment and the company closed down. We knew the company was in deep financial problems, especially when the Finance Manager advised her gals to start looking for new job. Actually the tell tale signs are many. The turnover of the finance and account department will tell everyone that the company is having problem. Maybe you are not close to those gals in the finance department (those gals know exactly the financial situation of the company), that's why you are caught by surprise

I have never worked anywhere that has just closed without notice. I guess any job I have had I have always known if it was going to be temporary. However I was fired without notice because the last boss I had didn't like me. I had been with the company for nearly two years when the company hired a new boss. From day one the lady didn't like me and found a way to get rid of me after just a few months.

One of the first jobs I had when I came back to Alabama was at a center for mentally disabled adults; I worked there for like eighteen months and had very good benefits. By early 2001, we had heard rumors that the place was closing and no one confirmed it; They kept it under wraps for like a month or so, but finally, they came and told us the deal; I got unemployment for it as well; What it taught me was to not to trust too many jobs. I still feel that way. I got a little parttime job and I am like, OK, how long on this? that is the way of the world now.

I have worked for companies that have closed while I was still an employee. There were 3 companies that have previously closed while I was still an employee. I once thought that I was the jerk that made the company close. LOL

So far, there are only once but it's not the whole company that closed down, rather, it's only the outlet where i'm working in.. hehe ^_^ Even though we had about 6 months of notice, but it seems like too short a time for us to really prepare.. Because majority of us had been working there for years, and it's not easy to part.. BUt too bad, due to poor sales and poor makerting strategy by the head office, almost half of the existing outlets, closed down, which includes the outlet i'm working in.. With that, i moved on to something different now.. haha =D As for lesson learnt, there's nothing much to be learnt only that, be prepared to leave when there's a slightest news for u wont wanna be the last where everybody had left.. lol =D

I worked for a computer manufacturer that folded three weeks before Christmas during the period just after the tech bubble burst. On a Tuesday morning one of my co-workers brought in an article from a newspaper that said the business was in major difficulty and that survival wasn't assured. Some of the management came over to reassure everyone that it was just a rumor and the company was doing fine. That Thursday, five minutes before our lunch break, management and security came down to the floor to notify us that we were to collect out things and get out quickly. We were told to grab everything that was ours because we would not get a second chance to come back. We were all thanked for our services and escorted out of the building. The whole exercise took about fifteen minutes. The treatment we received left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that the company and management were worried about some workers taking the news badly and attempting to steal or damage property, but it was a demeaning experience that left many of us in a tight spot. I was lucky that I secured a better job with more pay two weeks later. I received some great experience working for that computer manufacturer and I learned a lot. The money that I earned and the experience that I gained at the replacement job was so much more valuable. It worked out for me in the end.

I worked in the Real estate mortgage business for many years and about 3 times I came to work to find the head company had locked us out with no warning. Some times it was very hard to get your back pay. The first time it happened I didn't know what to do. But I learned never to leave any personal items at work and always to know who owned the company I worked for, their address and phone number at home. And how to go to the court house and file for back wages as soon as I got locked out. it's a case of CYA Cover your A**S

Under the financial crisis situation currently, all of us are facing heavy pressure. Even the company I worked is still fine,I have my own fear.I am a sales in my company,so the order speaks everything. If there is no good and large order in near future,I think I would be fired. Up to the present,I have not faced a company closed. Is it lucky for me? I don't think so.I am stressed heavily now.I don't know if I can receive a large order soon. If not,I must consider to find a new employer. Wish all of us are lucky under current situation.Wish we can pass this situation smoothly. Good luck!

I was working as seasonal temp at a crayon manufacturing plant when the company decided to close the factory. It was a tough situation because they had not hired any full time workers for some time and the temp workers usually outnumbered the full time workers. When the closing announcement was made, many of the full timers blamed the temps. People I had been friends with would no longer speak to me. It was a hard few months.

My closest experience was to have a contract non renewed, making me out of my primary job with benefits and insurance. I had a second job at that time and that second job did eventually go full time. I am now insured and have benefits again. I have never worked in a field that had businesses completely closing.

Hello friend. I have not worked in a company yet. I have been working in a school with a stable job in teaching though we are having fewer students year by year due to the one-child policy in China...

I worked in the reservation call center for Western Pacific Airlines about 10 years ago. They went bankrupt and closed down. I left just before because they kept telling us that it was only Chapter 11 and involved restructuring so we were convinced all would be well and we lied to customers making reservations to convince them to go ahead and buy reservations. Once we found out the company actually filed Chapter 7, I just couldn't go on telling people they would be fine to reserve tickets knowing that it was not true. If I had stayed it would only have lasted another 3 or 4 months and we had to keep lying. I just couldn't do that with a clear conscience. even though they offered a bonus for those who stayed to the end.
