Hello mylotters, I'm a first-year college student. Recently i find that more and more students bring their laptops to classrooms studying or playing. It is too convenient. I'm a little envious. But i wonder if it is necessary for college student to have a laptop. As for me, if i had one, i think it will distract my attention. It will become a tool of watching TV and movies. What about you? Do you have a laptop now?

I have a very slow desktop and late last year my husband bought me a new laptop. I love it! I have mentioned in other discussions how great it is to be able to sit anywhere to work including the garden instead of being stuck in an office; laptops are great for travelling too! As far as college students go, those days were over for me a long time ago, but I would imagine it would be very handy; I guess it depends, taking a laptop to school only to play games on it, doesn't seem quite necessary; if it helps you with your lectures why not?

Well, it depends on how you would use it. I mean, even if you have a laptop, you can still use it on your papers or documents you have to print for school. It still depends on you if you want to be distracted or not. Don't get DVD movies, don't have it connected online so that you won't be able to watch videos online and you can focus on your work. Online have connection when you have to submit things online via email. I have a laptop but, I really didn't bring it to school when I was still studying. I was scared that I might break it and that it might get stolen from me. Its something that I would worry about than something that I would be eager to use in school. That's why I just leave it behind at home and all the things I do there can only be done at home. So when I am at school, I have less distractions to worry about. Of course, it still depends on one's discipline.

I don't know how or if anyone actually reads all of the responses they get to questions here. But, for what it's worth. I had a laptop throughout both undergrad and grad school. I found it extremely convenient for group task work and traveling between school and home, as home was always at least 2.5 hours away from school. I could easily take all of my assignments with me and be able to work anywhere I needed or wanted to. But I also feel that my laptop is a work tool and not an entertainment tool. While I have watched tv and listened to music on my laptop, I work more often on it, so it is not a distraction. I have a friend who often brought her laptop to class, and admittedly she played games more often than she took notes. That can be very dangerous. Not only does it detract from you education, it is also disruptive to the class (excessive tapping noises) and disrespectful to the instructor. So, I don't recommend using your laptop in that way should you choose to purchase one. But, I have found over the years that having a laptop has saved me time and money. I am now self employed and having a laptop enables me to work anywhere in the world that I want to without disruption to my business. I'm working on purchasing my third laptop by the end of May. So yes, I love my laptop.

No but my girlfriend does and I usually just use hers. Labtops are really convenient especially now because there's wireless internet and things like that out. They're great for working online and checking your emails and whatnot. Other then her labtop I have a desktop computer at home that's not all that great but I'm in the process of cleaning it up to make it faster.

I don't have a laptop but I think that there should be a cheap brand made for kids in maybe 1st or 2nd grade. Mainly because when I was that age, the teachers stressed the now obsolete cursive handwriting, When they should have been teaching typing. It would also be easier than going to a computer lab or worring about idiots vandalizing fifteen hundred dollar MAC laptops found in COWs. And they would get software installed in differant grades. Example: Microsoft Word installed with the computer, but Microsoft Exel or PowerPoint installed in 3rd grade. And later on, internet. And they would keep the computer until maybe high school, where they would get a more expensive one, and use that through collage, if they would last that long.

Hi there happyforever! Yes, I have a laptop. I bring it to work everyday. I use it to deliver my lectures through powerpoint presentation. It is very convenient. Moreover, I don't have to share the faculty room's computer with the rest of the pack. I also bring it on trips so that I can do my usual online activities even while on a trip.

Hi there happyforever! Just like you, I faced the exact same dilemma that you faced right now when I was in college as well. During my first year in college, I also found many students having laptops (and they always discuss about the latest drama series they download and stuff, which make me quite envious) and wondered whether I really needed one. After contemplating about it for a while, I decided to pester my dad to get me one. Considering there was not many entertainment choices when I was at college, the laptop could be my best friend. Besides, I didn't want to always go to college and complete my assignments; I wanted to have the freedom to do a little back at home as well. In addition, I didn't have any radio while I was at college as well, so the laptop could serve as a music player to me as well (I am a very avid music listener! ). In the end, after listening to my "argument points", my dad bought me a laptop. That laptop has served me well for the past 4 years or so; it has just recently crashed so I bought myself another TWO laptops (since I can afford it, now that I have started working)!

I bought one five years ago.then I just graduated from my college.I never considered about buying it until I got a job.I think there are no use for the college students.they must have spent most of time on their watching TV and getting on the internet and few time on the studying.

Hi, girl. The increasing laptops are a good signal to display times pace, right? So we should be happy with this. As you said, most just use them for games or movies in China. As far as I know, the students around me (3 yrs. ago) just used them for movies, music, qq(especially girls), net games(especially boys). It's their rights and we could do nothing, so this should not be a problem for you. I got one after graduation. For me, it is used for work, and sometimes I'll use it as entertainment tool since it's designed for that function as well. What I want to say to you is that, laptop itself has no ability to distract your attention from studying or things like that, the point is how to use. It's a way that you should really consider this matter. Use it right, you grow, or you fall. So when you are ready for a laptop, just be ready for it. Additionally, you may myLot at anytime, sounds great, huh? ...

I don't have a laptop.I don't want to buy one because we need to charge it all the time also there are chances of it getting stolen.Laptop is becoming popular like the cellphones nowadays.Actually it is meant for people who do work most of the time.Nowadays people are buying it for entertainment and passing time.a laptop is more expensive than desktop so i will prefer a desktop computer.

It is not essential for anyone to have a laptop but owning one can be very convenient to certain situations. Especially now in the age of wireless internet connection.

Yea ,i am now just typing on my laptop .i worked for years ,so i can buy one for myself. Actually,i think students take their laplops into the college is not something we can say they should do or should not do,that totally depends how they use it. If you are the one that like studying, then the laptop would be the great tool of studying,if you just fool around, then the laptop also could be the greal tool to kill your time.To be honest ,i think most of the students are fooling around nowadays. I had never gone to a college, after i graduated from high school ,then i worked, and now some of my classmates are still looking for a job under the damn financial crisis. lol

I just recently got my laptop from my mom and I think that its an additional tool that can help you with research or to pass time. Back when I was in college we already had a great computer at home so I didnt think of getting a laptop for myself. If you already have a desktop at home then its okay to just have that. But if you have alot of things that you do in the computer for school why not. Just make sure you use it wisely so that it wont come out as a thing for playing games or what not.
