Failure To Thrive

Well my little princess has been diagnosed and now they are trying to test her for many things. Her last visit she was seven months and weighed 12.4 lbs and has completly fell off the charts. We know she is tiny but she eats well and seems healthy to us. So my question is pretty general I want info on Failure To Thrive. I did search the internet and it was all pretty general by saying its a calorie problem. So anyone have some first hand experience with this?

I wonder if it is a malabsorption disorder. Where she appears to be eating enough and seems full, but then the food goes through without the nutrients being digested and used properly. Have they tested for that yet? That would just mean she might need a different formula or enzymes to help her digest her food. I hope your little peanut snaps out of it and starts gaining weight like gangbusters!

I'm so glad your little one is eating well and doing all the normal healthy things. Maybe she's just destined to be tiny - babies all have their own different timetables for gaining weight, etc. I have heard of Failure to Thrive, but don't have any experience with it. All I can offer is best wishes, and I hope the tests come up with some useful answers. Bless!

oh dear. I hope they are not just saying it is failure to thrive due to her petite size. is her weight ideal for her length, is she otherwise healthy - is she on target with her motor skills? If those questions are positive then she is still thriving, even if she is not on the charts.... I would think. Anyhow, I surely wish the best for your dear Savannah and the rest of your family. I know how worrisome such news and uncertainties can be.

She is crossing lines on the chart. Aka her growth has jumped over her weight and that is why they are concerned. She has been petite since about one month but she wont gain weight. We dont see anything to worry about but we will let the doctors do some of their tests for now.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I don't know anything about Failure to Thrive. I will keep y'all in my prayers though. My son was a preemie, and he only weighed 17 pounds at one year old. He is now 17 and weighs 130 and is 5 ft 9. I wish your little one all the best.

So sorry to hear this about your baby. I remember that a few mothers from my birth club reported that their babies had been diagnosed with failure to thrive (back when they were under a year old) and that they needed close monitoring as to their growth. As far as I know, their kids are fine now. Hope everything turns out well for your dd. :)

I won't call this first hand experience but I do know two mother's who had children diagnosed with failure to thrive and it was strictly based on the weight chart. All three children appeared healthy and were active and thriving in every other way. They were all good eaters. They are all much older now....13, 8 and 9 and though they are still small they are extremely healthy and no one is worried about their weight anymore. I think that diagnoses is given out too easily without doing enough studies and checking on the overall health of the child. Your little one is probably going to be just fine.

Doctors seem to over diagnose things these days.

I would try not to worry to much. Some babies are just little. your boys seem small too and your not very big. Its good that the doc is checking into things. I do hope that everything checks out ok with your little princess.

I had a friend who was told that her baby had failure to thrive and that it was because she was trying to have her on a strict schedule. The baby did eventually snap out of it, but some people said she was abusive because of her style of parenting. From what your dad says when he posts, she is just a typical baby, interested and bright, so I hope she is just saving up her growing and that she surprises the dickens out of you.

I hope so too. She eats alot so I know thats not an issue I feed her when shes hungry or when I eat as she demands to eat what I eat lol.

If you have cared for her, there is no reason for her to have Failure to Thrive. But it could be something else. I would take her to the doctors and maybe he or she can recommend a specialist. It could be serious and if it is, it is best to get treatment now. If they tell you there is nothing wrong, it might be that your daughter might be one of those tiny people.

Oh they have diagnosed her already and are attempting to do some tests on her already. She eats plenty I think shes just like the rest of our family and burns calories fast. I mean I am the biggest of our family and I am only 130lbs and thats with the extra baby fat im still trying to lose.

Second hand experience if that is any help? My niece was tiny like Savanna when she was a baby /toddler and to be honest she is still pretty small now that she is grown up , married and working but she is healthy and strong. I don't have any advice sweety but i do have plenty of love and prayers and I pray that your princess is as healthy and strong as my niece was and is! Hugs xxx

I don't have any info but hope they soon find out what's wrong....I know my daughter couldn't have kids because her body would starve the babies....she tried twice then gave up....but I don't think that's related..her's was an enzyme problem...she has always been tiny though.....

Well I don't what failure to thrive means either, I've never heard of it. A friend of mine has a baby that's seven months old and she's tiny too, I don't know why. I have a nephew that just turned 8 mos. and he's big, he had a little trouble gaining weight when he was a few months old too, but I guess he grew out of it, my brother said he's healthy now, and he's a pretty good sized boy. I hope you can get more info. on this...Take care

I know its a calorie problem but there are so many reasons this could happen. She seems so healthy that I just cant see diagnosing her with failure too thrive.
