It has happened before, but not for such blatantly obvious reasons. At other times, the person has not done it to hurt the party he was leaving. This guy is a real pip! 29 years with the GOP and he just now realizes that he is a Democrat at heart. I say that he just realized that he is a Commie at heart and finally got up the courage to admit it. He and the Pres. are not worth a 5 cent stamp together. Shalom~Adoniah

He's always been closer to democrat than republican. The only reason he switched now is that he thinks he stands a better chance of getting reelected with a "D" next to his name. he would have done it no matter what the GOP was doing.

Last one was Jim Jeffords of Vermont moving from Republican to Democrat, causing the balance of power to shift back in 2001. Specter did what was right for Specter and he has been a lonely liberal Republican for many years. Congrats, Arlen, for going with your 'gut'. Now to see if it is best for America...

That is incorrect. Jim Jeffords changed from Republican to Independent. He's never been a democrat. I respected that move since he went with what he honestly stood for as a politician. Specter on the other hand was an opportunist. He didn't go with his gut. He went with what he believed was most likely to get him reelected and he admitted that.

I had to laugh at my sister in law, she is from Pennsylvania, and when I told her spector had changed parties, she said, "From what to what? Isn't he democrat?"
