Am I crazy, have I lost my mind?

I probably have and there's nothing I'm going to do about it. We have 6 hamsters, another one just died on us. 2 years ago our first hamster died of old age. Last year, 2 dwarf hamsters died on us, and tonight we discovered another one was sick, we couldn't tell what was wrong with her. We figured out that she'd broken a tooth and it was lodged in a pouch, her face was swollen and tipped to one side. My husband tried to get it out and was successful, and she started running around like everything was fine. A few minutes later, we put her back in her cage and started to stuff her pouches again. my husband pulled her out of the cage and tried to empty them, and that's when she died. Now, we're crazy. On Friday were are going to pick up more hamsters, possibly 8 of them. Yes you read it right 8! of them. We have a cage big enough for them, they're all babies too, not old like the rest of our hamsters are. One dwarf has arthritis and may be blind. Our Syrian is blind, and our other dwarfs are fine. Our teddy bear hamster is old and fat. So am I crazy for waning to get more of them after this has happened? We love our hamsters, small pets are so much easier to take care of. We have a cat, he doesn't bother the hamsters, he doesn't care about them which is a very good thing.

wow...you're makin me sound like a horrible hamster owner coz i only have one! sometimes i feel bad that she's alone in her cage but we don't want to breed any hamsters so yeah...just have one. i'm thinkin' that perhaps 4 would be a better start? 8 sounds a bit too many...but thats just me. :) either ways i'm all for hamster pets!!

If you have a syrian hamster, they like to live alone and will fight together. Hamsters aren't social animals generally (except for certain types of dwarf hamsters). Other rodents such as guinea pigs however, are definitely very social and should always have at least one friend.

hmm...perhaps i should find otu what sort of hamster mine is. she's like and small and grey...and cute... my brother actually got her and he took care of her for like 1 1/2 years or so and then he had to leave for aussie to study so i adopted her... i hope she's fine on her own although i can't imagine havin to live alone all the time.

8 doesn't sound too bad especially if they are the type that can live together. Are you getting some from a hamster rescue? I know the rescues out here seem to have a lot sometimes. I've rescued a few hamsters but I tried to only have one at once since I like the syrians and they have to be single anyway.

They are still babies and are living together still. I'm hoping they can all live together. They're a mixed breed, Syrian and Panda Bear.

I've seen pictures of them and they are mixed colors. A few of them are mixed white and brown, white and tan and a couple of them are solid, dark brown.

But am I crazy for going for 8 more at once? It's a lot, we'll have 14 of them by that time if we do decide to get that many.
