Time to go read my book...

I've been reading this book for a couple months now. It's a good book, but I just can't seem to stick with it like I have other books. I don't know if it's me, or if it's the authors writing style. Have you ever read a book that you somewhat enjoyed, but it also seemed like a bit of a chore to get through?

I read one which took time getting into, but once I'd read through the first chapter or so, which was really slow, it picked up and I really enjoyed it. The beginning was explanatory of the characters in the book and how they were linked and it was a little confusing at first. As time went on though, you could place them together. Brightest Blessings.

Lol... how very convenient that was! You're like me... if you find a really good, enthralling book, you get wrapped in it and can't put it down until you've finished it. I'm like that with my Bernard Cornwell books.

There are some books that really start slowly and once you get into them you can't put them down. Stephen King and Clancey's books seem to be like that a lot. Both are very verbose writers. Thanks Zelo

His writing style has really changed as of late and I think you would really like them as they are not so graphically horrific (aka. Cujo & Christine). Thanks Zelo

Yeah, I've read some that just weren't my style or whatever, but it did seem like a chore to read them.

Oh, yes, this happens to me ALOT! I am pretty picky and if a book just start out good it doesn't take long to lose my interest. I love to read and have certain favorite authors I read. The writer's style and the storyline is very important. Character developement and so forth. I am reading a book now that I wish I had more time for. I read it while waiting in the doctor's office or waiting for an order at a restaurant.

You may have just inspired me to start another discussion. Who are some of your favorite authors? Sometimes (when I remember) I'll bring a book when I take my children to their practices. Sometimes I'll read a little while before I go to sleep. With this book I only read it sometimes before I go to bed.

I have had a few books like that. I think that it's the writing style. I have read some books that I can hardly put down. I actually even feel a little disappointed when it's finished. I am actually reading one now that I enjoy while I'm reading it but am no where near anxious to get to it.

Yes, this happens to me occasionally. Actually the book I'm reading right now I've been reading for over a month! Mostly because I just don't "feel" like reading it. It's a good book but it just doesen't keep my attention. Maybe it's time to move onto a different book and maybe try reading that one again some other time. I hate when reading a book becomes a chore.

Yep. I've been debating the idea of just switching to another book, but for some reason I'm being stubborn and trying to stick to this one.

I find this to be true of anything I attempt to read on paperback. I loved "Me and My Big Mouth" because it is by Larry Adler (well, sort of), but it isn't available on audio so I had to read it on paperback. I can only read a little at a time, so it took me at least 6 months to finish that book. I enjoyed it, but it was just so difficult getting through the physical task of reading.

That often happens to me. At the best of times I'm not a fast reader, I commit the usual sin of going back and re-reading paragraphs a lot. I'm a good reader but not so great at comprehension so I need to go over things till they make sense. Another thing that can get me bogged down in a book is too many complex characters and I like to enjoy my characters whether they are likeable or not and some seem to be superfluous to the story sometimes or just plain dull. The book I'm currently reading has taken me months so far...it's beginning to look very ratty and I wish it would hurry up and have some sort of climax or anti climax. I think that when I finally finish it will be one of those times when I really miss having my book around.

I feel the same way... i am currently reading the Twilight Series... and i am now in the third book "Eclipse"... and i don't really know what the hype was when it comes to these books... the plot of a Vampire-Human love affair is so over used... i really did not want to read anymore but i promised myself that i will read the books first before i watch the movie...

Yes in fact i have one going most of the time. I read the type of book that you need to read a chapter and then think about it for awhile. Of course I am also reading for pleasure and those go quickly

Yeah. I usually make a pile of such books, and post them on paperbackclub, to get rid of them. No point in reading a book, just because it's popular. If I can't get into the book, I'm not going to waste my time trying to read it. It's just that simple.

I have definitely experienced books like that myself. There would be a book that I was enjoying so much and then all of a sudden it would become a serious challenge! Still, I would go off and make myself a cup of tea or something and this would give me a five minute break and then I would take my cup of tea, return to sitting in my favourite chair and I would try again to turn those pages! Before I read a book I always read the back cover and I also have a gaze at the first couple of pages and then I can tell whether I'm going to sink in deeply and digest the words! Reading is a really pleasurable activity, if you find the right book! Happy reading. Andrew

Yes, this always happen to me, I don't have a good patient, if the book is really good, and can get me through, I can finish the book in a whole night, but sometimes, when I read a few pages, I just can't get through, and I put it in the desk, think that I can read it tomorrow, but tomorrow when I open the book, I don't want to read.

I am not a person who can have two books on the go at one time, I have to be able to finish one book to start another, trouble is when I get a book that I enjoy but it's heavy going, I get impatient, I want to read other books and usually I get about three or four books from the library which are waiting to be read, but I can't start them until I've finished the current book, usually I have to extend them as you get 3 weeks borrowing time on each book. I do find that the typeface makes a great deal of difference if the words are small and close together it takes me eons to read it, I like the words nicely spaced out and not bunched up on the page, if that makes sense, usually after one chapter of a book I can tell if I like it enough to continue.

I can't remember as I haven't been reading for some time now; except that I started really reading again a month or so back after I got back from CJ's Book Fair at school. It was buy-one/get one, so I decided to treat myself to something to read. I unknowingly picked up the second book of the 'Twilight' series and was told at that moment by his aide that there were 4 books in all and that they had the first one as well. So I went ahead and got them both and am not sorry for it. I'm on the 4 and final book right now and I'm taking my time as this is it; the end. The author, Stephanie Meyers was suppose to write a Saga afterward on Edward's perspective but someone leaked it on the internet and got her ticked off; she refused to write anymore about the storyline. But I think she has calmed down a bit now and will eventually begin writing this new series. I sure do hope so. The second movie is coming out in November, so I've been told.

Not lately but it just depends on what is going on at the time. Some times it takes me a while to get started even on a good book. Then suddenly I get caught up. It depends for me a lot on the writing style of the author. I have a book of 5 novels by Bram Stoker (Dracula) and I am having a hard time digging in. I read the first book- Dracula and am starting another but the writing style and vernacular of the late 18th century sometimes makes it hard for me to concentrate.

Do you read books? - Do you guys finish reading books that are cool?
Image: http://www.freedigitalphotos.net
My online friend was recommending me the book of Angels and Demons and I'm still getting round to finishing it. In fact, I feel that I need more time truly. LOL. I do have the same thought; sometimes the book titles that I have came across before and in my possession like I loan it from the library or etc are way cool but I just don't have the time to read it. I think that there is an inkling to finish something but perhaps lacking time in reading and spending time finishing. However, I do love reading from the net most of the time like blog posts, articles and discussions. Just need that determination to finish the books that I have in my list. Have a nice day.
