Recently i read an article about the University of Saskatchewan turning down a scholarship fund because the donar specified that the scholarships have to be given to NON ABORIGINALS. They stated that this was discrimination.
BUT They have scholarships AND seats saved at the university that you HAVE TO BE ABORIGINAL FOR. Now how is THAT not discrimination right there...you arent native theres 13 seats saved for natives but no ones applied for them so they dont get filled and you dont get to take the classes.
I guess im of the opinion that if they are going to have scholarships based on having to be one race then they should allow other scholarships based on having to other races...otherwise take that qualification out of ALL scholarships.
Is it just me or does it seem unfair that they allow one but not the other.
The race thing gets me going - Esp when one race gets privileges and allowances but another race is told to suck it up you have to do this. It also really gets me going that people immigrate to a country but expect the country they immigrated to to make allowances on language and such...you want to live in an area you should make an effort to speak THAT country's official language and not expect them to freakin sing their national anthem in a language that isnt their official language.
I recently had someone refuse to serve me in a resturant here because i cant speak Chinese...this is CANADA our offical languages are ENGLISH AND FRENCH. I shouldnt have to learn another language to order food in a restaurant. Needless to say i walked out and i will not be going back there. I could see having to know Chinese to order in China...but here WTF???

I think it has something to do with preserving "The Natives" - who were here and own this land before immigrants came and terrorize them. It's almost an apology I guess - and a way to show them that that's not the case anymore.
Though the scholarship fund should have focus on a specific group (non-natives) or listed them with the reasoning of "trying to encourage this group of ethnicity to...." whatever the purpose of the scholarship is. I think the language "specific to non-aboriginals" is what set the school off.
Race is interesting.

It is interesting.
I must say however - I am part native and theres some Treaty indians here that are just as native as i am and because my grandpa was illiterate he never had a treaty number. I'm not very native and honestly i feel that anyone who's as mixed as i am really shouldnt qualify for any of the treaty and special treatment that is alloted for treaty indians.
I myself would feel pretty darn guilty about not paying taxes...the house they get here...and any of the extras. Theyd be nice however I really dont think its the responsibility of non native people today to make amends to the ancestors of those who are native now. It just irks me when someone says you owe me this because white people did this...MY WHITE ancestors werent even in this country when the natives were being treated badly...I dont personally owe anyone anything for that.
As well - the Owing seems to extend towards anyone whos not native even if they just moved here...
I'm sure this a touchy subject. but i really dont think that its very fair to give one group special treatment now for things that were done in the past. Theres nothing special done now for the Jewish descendants of those in containment camps....
I also find that the people who actually have to work for things..houses cars money etc...actually respect the things they own and dont wreck it and say the govt owes them a replacement. (Speaking from experiences talking to the natives living in this area...they really dont respect their possessions and feel the govt owes them)

Very touchy subject - but one that should be talk about more.
Generational sin is interesting, and complicated.
Just like race.
Thanks for your input - as a mixed ethnicity. Very interesting to hear about your point of view.

I guess I was not aware that Canada had aboriginals, but that just shows my ignorance. Yes, if allowances go one way, they should also be allowed to go the other. I would not learn a foreign language to eat out, no matter how good the restaurant is supposed to be. My money is good in any language.
