Nervous about my first flight

May 18, 2009 11:58am CST
I am due to go away to Ireland on the 28th of this month along with my partner and our two youngest sons. This will be the first time I have ever been on a plane. Although I am excited about going away and going on a plane I am also very nervous. I don't want my 8 year old son picking up on my nerves as it is also his first time on a plane. I was suppose to go on a plane at the age of 17 with my parents and brother but this got cancelled due to my mum getting rushed to hospital. So now at the age of 36 I am eventually going on my first flight. It is only a short one just over an hour, so at least I will not be on the plane too long. I have no idea what to except. I was wondering if anyone has a few tips to make the flight more comfortable and to settle my nerves. How did you feel when you flew for the first time? Did you fly with family or friends or did you do it alone?

I suffered anxiety disorder before and now I am fine. Just thinking you can do the same as others, let's see so many people can travel all around the world by air and they are fine, so you can do it. Keep thinking you can do it, it's only an hour flight it only just like you go to somewhere by a car. My first time was very good and felt very happy. But after I suffered the anxiety disorder, I always have felt extremely sick on the flight and after I knew it is only anxiety causes me this panic attack. Wish you have a good time with your family on flight.

I took my first plane ride alone when I was around 22. It was smooth, and took a friend's advice to chew gum so as to lessen the popping on the ear due to elevation. If your airline does allow that, chew gum. Plus for first time flyers try to take those anti-vertigo pills so as to avoid the woozy feeling after (in case you don't know if you're the type who's airsick or not). Plus, for long distance flying, try not to eat too much or have too much sodium (salt) it causes jetlags. Good luck!

Thank you. I am not sure if they allow it I will have to check that out. I think they probably do. Its a good idea about the pills I will have to get some.

my first flight was last 2003 when i need to go to my in laws which is a flight-away from us. it was not that exciting because i flew alone and got no one to talk to. my husband was there already for a work conference. i just enjoyed taking pictures from above and was amazed of how the Almighty put things together.

What a shame you had to fly on your own. But at least you have your pictures to enjoy.

Still I cannot say something about this situation because I did not yet fly through an airplane. I wish I can travel through plane so that I know what we feel in first flight.

That is actually a normal feeling I think for most people that have not gotten on a plane. I at first thought that it would be really scary and I went at it alone so it didn't help but afterwards I found it to be exciting and couldn't wait for the flight home. It is human nature to be nervous about something that is new to us will be out of our very own comfort zone and until we are used to the activity or the situation we will feel uncomfortable. A good tip that I can give is that you should just go in with no worries and make sure to get enough relaxation and sleep the day before and everything will be alright. =)

Thanks for the tip. I am glad that everything worked out well for you.

i don't have any tips for you cause i haven't gone on a plane as well, i don't even have a passport yet, and when i travel locally, i prefer to ride a ship or a land based travel instead of an hour plane trip. they say that the part of the plane voyage that can make you dizzy in some way is the take off and the landing part.
23 May 09
I have heard that as well. We could have gone on the boat but it takes 8 hours.

the first time i've been on a plane was when i was still a baby. :) and i've been flying ever since because it's the quickest way to travel from my hometown where we spend summers to manila where we stay the rest of the year. i also love to travel so i have flown to other countries as well. when i was a kid, i would always get nauseous on the plane so i always asked for a bag from the flight attendant just in case i would need it. :) i also brought candies because swallowing lessens the pressure in our ears. when there's turbulence and the plane would move up and down, there's this weird feeling in my tummy and i discovered a technique so i could avoid that weird feeling. whenever the plane would move up and down, i would exhale and hold my breath. :) hope this helps.

Thank you for the tips I will remember to try to do that if we do hit any turbulence.

i think its only natural to be nervous the first time you fly. i have always flown with family and i was nervous the firs time i flew. To be honest with you seein as its a hour long flight you wil be in the air prob less than a hour becaus of time to land and take over. I know it will be hard but try to relax take a book with you or a cd player and listen to some music to try and relax your body. You wont have too much time to worry, just dont sit by a window and think that your on the top of a bus.
23 May 09
That is good idea think I will take some music to listen to. My partner usually takes his portable DVD so I have that option as well.

I know what you feel. I also experience some nervous in my very first flight in an airplane. Although i have someone with me, a friend of mine. Our seats are far away, so i have to take care of myself. It was a great experience indeed. During my first flight i take a pee at their comfort room..hahahha..just to see if it is working. ^-^ Now, whenever i take a flight in a plane, i just sleep and wake up when the airplane landed. ^_^

LOL I think sleeping sounds good. Great to hear that you had a good experience

The first flight I went on was with my husband. I had only been married a few months and my husband was going on a business trip and I went with him. I really wasn't nervous because I was excited about where we were going. We were going to New York City. You will be fine. But be sure and bring some gum and chew some gum when you take off and land it will help your ears from popping.

Sounds like fun going to New York. I will get some gum. Thank you.

well i had my first flight a year ago.. i need to go to singapore to help my sister in her household choirs because she is 7 months pregnant.. i was nervous the day before my flight and i keep thinking and imagining what will happen to me the other day.. when the day of my flight came i woke up early and packed my things and went to the airport 3 hours early prior to my scheduled flight.. i was very nervous when i arrived at the airport but it was gone because there are many personnel who assisted me all the way the airplane.. it was a 4 hours air journey and as the plane goes up i felt scared the plane might blow up like what happen in some movies and tv series.. when we are in the air everything is peaceful.. when we are about to land the plane vibrated but at the end everything turns out to be ok..

That is good that everything was ok. You are a good sister going to help out I am sure your sister appreciated the help.

Hi Littleone, How exciting for you all so instead of getting nervous just look forward to the experience, I have flown numerous times and I cannot recall the first experience but all I suggest is to suck a boiled sweet upon take off and you'll be fine, the kids will be so excited that any nervousness from you will be overidden by that. Have a wonderful trip. Ireland is one place I would love to visit and haven't got round to visiting yet so lucky you. Huggles. Ellie :D
19 May 09
Hi Ellie I would highly recommend it. Ireland is a lovely place and the people are so friendly. It also helps that most of my partners family are there and his sister has already said she wants to take us out on a shopping trip when we get there. That is what I am hoping that I will get caught up in the excitement of my boys.

Ok I flew for the first time alone at the age of 18 from New York to Puerto Rico. I was a bit nervous but I think I have gotten better at it now that I'm in my 50's. Word of caution I would advise you too chew gum while taking off or landing. Your ears may bother you a bit. With my first trip to PR I actually thought I was going to be deaf. I have flown alot since I was 18 and have found if you have any type of sinus problem your ears and head will hurt you badly. I don't want to scare you I just want you to realize what is going on if it should happen to you. I find for the most part chewing gum helps me. After all these years of flying I still get nervous at the airport during security but once I'm in my seat I'm ok even though my only fear is taking off and landing. Turblence is another thing that can happen and that could be scary for someone who has never flown. But I believe turblence is air pockets in the sky. Thank God I have never had any trouble at all. Once in the air its great. I just got back from a trip to PR once again by myself. I traveled from New Mexico, to Houston to Newark and then to Puerto Rico all in one day and back to New Mexico the same way. Everything was great! So just sit back, relax and enjoy your first trip on a plane. At least your not traveling alone!

I appreciate you honesty like you said at least I can now what to expect then.Lots of people have advised chewing gum so will do that. It is helping my nerves that I am not on my own. You sound like a very busy person.

the same with me, i feel nervous as hell when i have my first flight. i can't even sleep the night before the day. When i reach the plane, what i did is pray that the lord will guide our flight and cover us from any harm. Then i'am chewing a bubble gum for my ear. then the whole time of my flight i just read and read.

Like someone said in another response that we all get nervous of the unknown. I hope that you lost your nerves and that flying is a good experience for you now.

When I had my first flight, I was too excited because I am really curios about my flight that I did not feel any nervousness at all. Last year I had my flight for an hour and a half and I was alone in that flight of mine. It was not my first time to have a flight but it was my first to be alone in my flight. I was quite nervous because I was used to take flights with my family. What I did was I kept myself relaxed so that I will be able to follow the instructions in the airport properly. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you. Must have been strange going on your own. Good to hear that it was all fine.

Hi, nothing to worry about, really. It was not untill last year that I took my first flight, and by then, I was 23 and I need to go to Shanghai from Dalian all by myself. Before that, neither have I been to Shanghai nor taken a flight. I have no idea what the airport looks like and I was so worried that I would lose face. Therefore, I searched online and did every preparation and invented all the solutions to any emergency. But when the day came, I found everything so easy because when I got to the airport, everybody seemed so nice and they were ready to help anytime. I just followed the sign and got on the plan smoothly. And the good part was that I felt nothing uncomfortable when the plan took off. Of course, it depends, so you are advised to bring gum with you, just in case. Just tell your boys, it is also the first time for mom to take a flight and tell them it is a time you need to support each other, let them know sometime in the future, they need to take the responsibility to protect their mother.

Its good that it went all smoothly. And that you were well prepared.
