Would you ever answer?

May 18, 2009 12:45pm CST
The delivery driver (he's a bit of a cheeky chappy) and I got talking today and he asked me how old I was, rude I know, but I said "how old do you think I am?" Big mistake, he said "about 30" I am 24! I know theres nothing wrong with being 30, IF you are 30, he added 6 years onto my age! Would you have been offended? Has anyone ever got your age wrong? Have you ever done it to anyone else?

I usually get told that I am younger than I look which is good sometimes. But then I think about it and wonder if they think that is it because I act a certain why or not. People often confuse experience with age as well.

Well, American style is rude if someone ask you about aging, but to me is normal. Most of people think I am 18 or so, but I am 24 now. I dont care what people give me an extra age, cuz I dont feel like it is important. Most of the time, they get my age is wrong... way wrong. I never ask someone for age, in case to make a real friend ship then I will.

Stock standard answer: "Old enough to give YOU a run for your money!" Nah, I wouldn't have been offended I don't think. They asked, you evaded, they answered..... Such are the risks associated with an exchange like that! There's always a positive angle we can take when someone gets our age wrong anyway. If they say we're younger than we are, then we're aging well and looking after ourselves. If they say we're older, then we're beyond our years in intelligence and maturity, so therefore advanced for our age! Never understimate the power of the personal con! lol.

I'll be 37 in July. I have some people say I look younger, some say much older. I have a beard at the moment, so most people think I'm older. Either way I don't really care to be honest, but then again, I AM a male and we tend to not get so concerned about things like this I don't think. I started to get a few gray hairs when I was in my early 20's too!

beyond my years in intelligence, maturity ......... and wrinkles would you really have been offended? are you over 30 or under 30?

No, I wouldn't be offended. First off, you asked him to guess. So he guessed wrong. Maybe he isn't a good guesser. Maybe he's an idiot. There are lots of them out there. Second, 24 isn't old, and neither is 30. Had he said 40, I might have been a little upset. Partly at him for guessing me to be that age, but mostly upset with myself, because I would have to be doing something majorly wrong in the care of my body for someone to guess me as 15 years older than I am! LOL Lastly, it takes A LOT to offend me anyway. If it is a touchy subject for you, next time someone asks, just politely reply, "Oh come on now! You know a true lady never reveals her age." Then just bat your eyelashes and laugh it off. Works every time.

no I know its not old, I said that, but nobody wants to eb thought of as 6 years older than they really are!

That's not necessarily true. If I was 19 and someone mistook me for 25, I wouldn't mind a bit! I do see your point at being called 30 when you're only 24. Thirty is a milestone, so it is a touchy age for some people. Turning 30 didn't really bother me. Thirty-one was a killer though, for some strange reason. I just started to feel old at 31. LOL And I know it isn't old!! Crazy how people view age, isn't it? I would just blow it off. What does he know? Some people really are that horrible at guessing. I've had people guessing me to be older since I was a kid, because I happen to be very tall for a woman. So I guess I'm just used to being thought of as older than I really am. However, a couple of days ago, I had someone tell me they couldn't believe I was in my 30s! It felt so good to hear them say that!

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, I usually just tell them how old I am. Age is just a number to me. You're only as old as you feel. And at 32, I still feel pretty darn good.

I dont think I would have been offended. If you ask 'how old do you think I am', you have to be ready for any response! Also, the way you were talking to him can make a big difference. A lot of people who are 24 are still in the party stage of their life. If you are more down to earth and showed it in the conversation, that could have affected his opinion. Also, the way you were dressed could have made him think you were a couple of years older. I get mistaken for the wrong age all of the time! I am the same age as you. People who dont know me swear that I am still in high school. People who do know me always think that I am older because I am not a typical 24 year old. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that age is just a number. I dont care how old people are! I have friends of all ages - because of their personality. So I dont usually get people's ages wrong because I simply dont guess!

If someone asked me to guess how old they are, I would answer. If that person gets upset because I answered the wrong way, well its on them. They asked the question. Personally i believe age is just a number, there are other factors that are more important in life. Honestly when I was a teenager, people easily thought that I was in my mid 20s, because of the way that I would speak. I found it flattering actually. Now that I am in my late 20's, 27, I look about my age may be a little younger.. When I dye my hair then well I get carded for everything! That can be a little frustrating, espeically with the new laws that you have to show your id for cough medicine.. That happen to me once, when I was trying to buy cold meds for my two year old son.. Had to go back to the car to get my wallet and bring it back in.. I asked the cashier before I gave her my id, "how old do I look"...her reponse was 12... that was frustrating... but instead of getting upset... I gave her the id and said thank you for the compliment.. I know how old I am, the rest of the world can keep guessing if they want, it is not going to bother me.. I just remember to keep my id on me at all times after I dye my hair...lol

12, I would have found that a bit rude!

I really hate it when people ask me to guess how old they are for that same reason...I would hate to guess wrong and offend someone. I always try to guess younger than what I think they are just to make sure I don't insult them and even then i've gotten it wrong at times. Some people are just really not good at guessing ages. It's just one person. I wouldn't worry about it.

Most people say I don't look my age, although that may have changed since I decided to quit coloring my hair - I'm 51. I guess if you weren't ready for what he might answer, you shouldn't have asked him what he thought!

I didnt think he would answer! I asked someone before and they said there was no way they were gonna answer that!

Oh it reminds me of our nieghboor back in subdivisions where i lived before. That time i was pregnant of course, if your pregnant you really looks like mature specially when you are carrying a baby boy. She asked me my age and i told her im 23, she got shocked sounds like she can't believe it coz accordingto her i look likeon my 30's, unlike her, she's 30's but many people think she's 18 lolz. She so rude and over confident woman. She annoyed me thou.
18 May 09
she sounds rude, what did you say to her?
@rainmark (4302)
18 May 09
Well i just smiled at her and ignored her. I just let her enjoy talking like that to me. I don't want to burst with anger specially i was pregnant. I don't want more trouble!

I have been guessed a few years older, and a few years younger. Neither offends me because I look slightly younger than I am, but I act slightly older. I try not to guess anyone's age because I am not always that good at it and I don't want to offend anyone.

You set yourself up for that one. If you want to play the guessing game then be prepared for a wrong answer. Maybe you do look thirty, I do not know, all I see are eys on your avatar. Quit playing games. If you find his attentions and questions inappropriate say so. Tell him your age is none of his business, unless you are flirting with him.
19 May 09
not flirting, just didnt think I looked 6 years older than I really am!

Boy, I wish someone would guess me at 30. I was always guessed considerably older than I was when I was a teenager, so I was used to it and it didn't bother me. If it bothers you, its best not to invite further inquiry, because inevitably, someone is going to say something unflattering, whether its true or not. If they ask how old you are, an it is in a situation that doesn't merit that kind of impertinent question, just laugh and say " Old enough to know its impolite to ask that sort of thing." Or something else that evades without inviting.
19 May 09
He would never have given up, I asked someone how old they thought I was once before and they said there was no way they were going to answer that. very wise.

At my grandparent's house where I used to live there was a boy who thought that I was the mother of two little kids I would go outside and ride bikes etc with. I was about 16 at the time. Albeit he was a little boy, I thought it was kind of funny that he thought I was their mother. In any case, I'm sure I've gotten a person's age wrong before, but I do try not to even guess it unless it's mentally!

He added 6 yrs onto your age? Oh YEAH! I would be offended. Any person who is not close with me (considered stranger) should not dare add yrs to my age whether I lied about it or not. How rude! Yes some people always get my age wrong. Usually at the mall whenever I want to pay by check and they ask for my driver's license. They usually take a second glance at me (I guess after seeing my birth year), smile, and go "I thought you were just 28-29" I usually respond "Oh i wish...thanks" lol It's more fun when I'm with my 15 yr old and 11 yr old daughters. I am usually thought of as their big sister. However, it's NOT that fun whenever i'm with my husband. Although my husband is just 6 yrs my senior he looks a lot older than me :(

Hi! It has happened to me before, and i never really let myself get offended. I just looked at it as it was their opinion and left it at that. I try not to guess someones age unless they ask me to, and then i try to get out of it. I try not to because alot of times if you are wrong it offends the person and even though it is not trying to be ugly it does hurt some feelings.

Being a man I am not at all sensitive about anyone knowing my age. If someone asks they get an honest answer. I never ask anyone to guess because I hate when somebody does that to me. I remember a long time ago I was with a new lady friend and she asked me to guess her age. We talked around it a bit and then I said 48! I think she was about to hit me and I said "No I meant were you born in 1948?". It turned out I was right and that made her 40 so I escaped punishment and we became good friends.

It seems many people just enjoy guessing about your age even if you don't ask them. I know i look much smaller than my age , i am 23 but i look like i am still around 16 .But i don't like it when people say like that . Specially when i go somewhere with my parents and they introduce me to others . They start guessing like " so your daughter is in which school ?" I don't feel it good because i am doing post graduation now. One funny incident happened when i went to live with my elder sis . She is 8 year older than me and married with two children . I lived there more than a year and helped her with all her work . But few times when i met few people their and talked to them , they told me they thought i was the daughter of my sis . It really sucks when people make assumptions without even asking about it . My sis didn't reacted to this but i know she felt bad .

I'm not surprised!
