I thought it was a heart attack. No.....just MENOPAUSE!

I was having my usual cup of coffee, standing by the window with my morning cigarette and BAM! I thought I was having a heart attack! This very strange pain in my chest. I decided I'd lay down and let it pass. Never having encountered this before, I didn't want to just freak out. Laying down seemed to make it worse. The pain and pressure in my arms, my chest. Sweat started pouring out of every pore in my body, running down my legs and face. I was thinking, "This is it. I'm going to die." And then, just like that, it was over. All total...3 minutes and it felt like an eternity. Happy 40th birthday to me! lol. Being of rational mind, I knew it wasn't a heart attack. It couldn't be. I called my mom and asked her how old she was when she started her "change of life". She was 38. I consider myself lucky! My grandmother was 36 so I'm guessing my daughter's will be when she's 42. lol. My doctor didn't believe me. I described it all, told her my family history and she still didn't believe. She talked me into wearing a heart monitor to be on the safe side. A month later, the tests showed there was absolutely nothing going on with my heart. Come to find out, it's a fairly common misconception. Most women believe it's a heart attack the first time they have one. For me, it wasn't a hot flash. I prefer to call them "flash attacks". Starting with a slight sensation of blood pumping quickly, my arms feeling like someone put a blood pressure cup on them and squeezed too tight. Erratic emotions. I started keeping track on my calendar....time of day, duration, etc. I've been doing that for 4 years now. How long does it last? Will it ever end? What's your story? When did it start for you? Did you opt for hormone replacement? I gotta say, I'm really looking forward to the end of this particular cycle in life!!

Poor you! I was 48 when I started, bt the first I knew of it was when I started having fainting fits - suddenly everything was unreal and oh so far away ... scary as I'd never suffered them before. I went on HRT cos I've got high blood pressure anyway (kidney problem) so didn't need the extra aggro. The HRT I'm on is quite mild, but it helps. You do realise you could have 10 years of this? It's called the perimenopause, apparently - it's only the menopause after you've had it. Yeah, confuse us why don't you, Mr Doctor Man. Now, where did I leave my brain cells ...

I'm lucky I don't get the sweats too much - or rather, they don't wake me up - but the palpitations were really distressing before HRT. Also, I couldn't concentrate on anything. I decided to launch my new freelancing career just prior to the day the last of my memory cells fizzled out. Wonderful. Thanks for the br by the way!

Poor you too! Did you find your brain cells?!?!?! lol. Thanks for the chuckle. I sure needed that! Thanks for the clarification...perimenopause vs. menopause. I always thought the "peri" meant "pre" but it makes more sense.....I guess. lol. I haven't experienced fainting fits although I have gotten light headed at times. Usually when I have my "flash attacks" I have to sit down until it passes and it's so hard to find a comfortable spot. I've been using a rather unconventional method for getting through them. Now, don't laugh! I "meditate" through them. Kinda like becoming one with the discomfort. It's really helped me, believe it or not. I just ride the wave. lol. Five years down, 5 more to go! Yippee!

That has got to be very scary! I am way too young for menopause. If I did get it now, there would be something terribly wrong - I am only in my 20's! My mother-in-law got menopause when she was in her mid 40's. She has been having hot flashes and other problems for about 6 years. Just recently, she finally went to the doctor's for a physical. They put her on medication for her high blood pressure. That really helped to calm down her hot flashes! I really dont look forward to that time in my life. I dont think I will hit it until my 50's though. None of the women in my family have hit menopause until after they were 50. I hope those crazy things stop soon! I think 4 years of torture is enough. Especially having to put up with a monthly cycle for so many years before that!

I thought I was too young too! It just runs in my family though. Sigh. It was and still is scary. I can feel it....my body changing. It's weird, uncomfortable and frustrating. Honestly, there's not much to look forward to about getting to this point in your life. Physically, I mean. When you're younger, you just don't think about it but at some point your body just says, "Listen up!" and you've got no choice but to listen! lol. You're lucky in the fact that the women in your family don't reach that point until their 50's. In a way I'm glad to get it over with. You know? The monthly stuff is sooooooo tiring! lol. I started that early too, when I was about 8 1/2. That's typical in my family too. Why do we have to suffer so???!?!? We women?!?!? What did we ever do?!??! Lol.

Holy crap! 8 1/2? I thought I was young when I got mine at 11! I agree that women really have to go through a lot. I do think it will be worth it all to have kids. But sometimes I wish I could opt not to! My step-mother says that any woman who doesnt want more kids should have her uterus out! No periods, no mess. That sounds like a good idea to me when I am finished having kids!

I'm a bit young myself for menopause, but have a friend just starting, and of course my mom. My mother used Evening Primrose Oil as a hormone regulator (its a natural supplement also called Borage Oil) and my friend just started using it last month on my mom's recommendation; and she has dramatically improved in her menopause symptoms. Also a lot cheaper than HRT.

Great idea! I didn't even think of Primrose oil. I'd never even consider traditional HRT given the fact that there seem to be so many side effects that don't pop up until after months or years of use. I'll go homeopathic over medicinal any day! Thanks for the input.
