Can Christians circumcise?

I've done some readings on numerous articles regarding this issue and most of them tell that Christians are not allowed to go through circumcision but I don't get the main reason. They quote that Paul asked us not to circumcise, otherwise we will be going back to the old times but I still don't get it? If you're a church leader or a long time Christian, can you give your views and response. Thanks. I want to know more.

Basically you have to look at the reason why Paul wrote to the Colossians, telling them not to circumcise. It was because the Jewish Christians of that time were telling the Gentile Christians that they were not "real" Christians unless they were physically circumcised. Paul was saying that this was not true, they did not have to be physically circumcised to be Christians. The reason why the Jews circumcised was as a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants...it was the physical symbol that they were God's chosen people. Once Jesus came and fulfilled all aspects of that covenant, the physical conditions we read about in the OT are expressed spiritually for us today. Therefore Paul writes about circumcising our hearts (cutting out our sinful nature). From a cleanliness standpoint, circumcision is considered to be more clean; however it is not a stipulation for getting into heaven.

lizshab, great response. I was busy typing my respond when you posted yours. Your response sound much better than mine. I only saw yours when I finished posting mine, and I felt guilty giving the same answer. Yours were not posted yet when I started writing. But your respond is good. Blessings

In the time that Paul wrote these things, Christianity started spreading to the heathen nations (Non-Jewish nations). Some people then forced the jewish laws upon these new believers. Paul said that the heathen should not be forced to follow the Jewish customs because following God is for all nations, not just Jews. These church leaders wanted all new believers to accept Jewish customs because some believed that God is only for the Jews. That is the reason Paul said that. It is good to learn the history of the times that the books of the Bible were written. It helps to understand why certain things were written, and then we get a better understanding of Scripture. The Bible was not written to teach us about history, that we find in other sources, and it is interesting. Today, many decades later, believers are not being forced to leave all their customs and accept Jewish customs, so the threat is no more. Today many Christians get circumsized due to different reasons. One reason is if a person gets infection often, as was the case with my brother. He was circumsized and the infection cleared and never came back. Others do it for different reasons. Hope this answers your question. Blessings

When Christianity started there was kind of a quarrel between Peter (Jewish Christian) and Paul (Roman Christian) whether Christianity should be opened to pagan people or not. As far as I have understood from the New Revelation, given by Jesus to Jakob Lorber (1800-1864) in Austria, the quarrel was settled down by the Lord himself, opening Christianity to pagans (by that time mostly Greeks, Romans and Syrians). Therefore outer signs like circumcision but also the Sabbath/Sunday problem don't matter at all as long as the message of love is spread through words and deeds.

Not really: I remember that he made a point of being a Roman citizen and he claimed the right to defend himself in front of a Roman tribunal. Finally by this chance he even had to be transported on Roman Government cost to Rome to be be judged by the Emperor himself.

Acts 21:39 Paul answered, "I am a Jew, from the Tarsus in Cilicia." Romans 11:1 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. Romans 11:13-14 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. Philippians 3:5 Circumcised on the eight day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee Roman citizenry could be purchased or inherited as Paul's was from his father. He invoked his citizenship when he was unjustly arrested in Jerusalem, so that he would not be tried in Jewish courts (who did not believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah) but by Caesar.

Christians can circumcise, but for a different reason. It is now for health and medical reason. Before in Paul's day, circumcision was to show that you were a Jew, so Gentiles were not circumcised, but Jews were. So as an entry into God's Kingdom, baptism replaced circumcision. Now it is done for medical reasons, and offers protection against certain s*xual diseases. Yet there are some societies who will never circumcise their male children and then it is cultural. For instance, Mennonites will never circumcise their baby boy. They will also never use middle names, but that is another discussion entirely.

I am Christian, most of my family is in fact and all of our boys are circumcised. To my knowledge there is nothing that says we can not. There may be some man made rules in some domination's that forbid it, but mine does not.

The best thing i like about Christianity is that........there are very minimal restrictions as far as what should be done and what should not be done.......and the ones that are there are very common ones........you will find 100's of restrictions in different religions..........but i feel i have never heard about any social restrictions about what need not be done........i have never ever heard that circumcision is a sin........and why would it be......many doctors believe that is is hygienic and avoids infections.........
