Who says animals don't have feelings and show love and concern? I heard this story a few days ago how during the busy morning rush hour on the busy Major Deegan Expressway here in NY, a female yellow lab dog named Chile was struck and hit, suffering from a broken leg and laying on the road. Cops tried to remove the still alive dog to safety however they ran into a major problem...another dog a Shepherd mix came to the rescue running around in circles protecting the other dog--who just happened to his mother! after a long time the cops finally managed to gently lift the mother dog to safety and into their patrol car and brought the injured Chile to the ASPCA where she is still being treated and recovering. Chile's son, realizing his "mom" was safe ran back to his home with a police escort to make sure he got home safely Here's the story here plus the charming video http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=resources/traffic&id=6812473 And who say animals don't care, have feelings and aren't protective? (Warning: NOT a referral link but to story and video) Just had to share this animal story as well My question though....why did the owners allow the dogs to run loose anyway?? That kind of ticks me off

really, letting those dogs run loose is a crime, but at least this story has a happy ending all around - and hopefully the owners are now keeping them safely in their yards (I'm sure the owner or former owner of Chili has to foot her bills too.)

that's so true I'm glad that Chili survived her ordeal and that Husky made it home all right, but being loose like that is just wrong - we keep a lock on our gate to keep our dogs in the yard (and inside most nights so they don't disturb the neighbors by barking.)

Yes it is a crime that the owners allowed the dogs loose like that--wonder if the ASPCA would fine the owner--no collars no ID...that's illegal here and most places

Seriously, where were the human parents of these pups? I had it when people are neglectful and animals end up getting hurt. But it is a heartwarming story from the dogs point of view.

Yes, that's the one thing that really ticks me off about this story. The dogs didn't even have collars--if the cops didn't follow the son dog home they wouldn't have known the two belonged to someone

No collars, that terrible. I have indoor cats and I am so paranoid about losing them that they are both microchipped. People need to have more responsibility for their pets.

I would say that owners probably didnt know the dogs had got out. But this is a great story to prove animals are more than animals they love too and deeply for thier moms dads and those who take care of them.

I think animals sometimes take care of other animals better than people take care of other people, don't you?

Wow that was quite a story. It kinda brought tears to my eyes, especially when I think of the fact my two kitties getting out and something like that happening to one of them. I really do hate seeing dogs run loose, because they just don't pay attention to traffic or anything. Dog owners need to be more responsible.

There are a lot of "jerks" (not the word I want to use) who when they walk their dogs around my way never have their dogs on a leash....not a good idea when cars go down the street as if it's the Indy 500

Hi Pye, what a heart warming story, it is true all animals have feelings and are protective of their own kind, especially I should think if it was his mother, yet is thought that animals forget who their parents are..but I don't think so..especially in this case, it is amazing! But also like you it ticks me off knowing that there are animals just running loose their owners should be sued!..hugs LoLo xx

Technically speaking I'm wondering if the ASPCA could fine the owner--two dogs running loose without a collar and/or license I think is against the law here

Awww! That is so sweet! I never doubted that animals have feelings. I see it every day among my two dogs and two cats... well, one cat. My husband's cat is totally insane and quite psychotic! If one of my dogs cries, the other comes running. My dogs are mother and daughter and the mother is always cleaning the daughter's face. They're Maltese and the youngest has a really bad tear stain problem. I have to clean her face every day, but only if "Mom" hasn't beat me to it! My cat also comes a-running if he hears one of the dogs crying. They all seem genuinely concerned about the welfare of the others. They know when I'm having a really bad day, too... they stick to me like glue! As to why pet owners let their pets, especially dogs, roam free is beyond me! We're well away from any major road (mostly farm country) and the cats can come and go as they please. They never wander far. (They know where the food is. LOL) But, because our property isn't fenced in, I won't allow the dogs out unless I'm with them. (They're very obedient and always come to me when I call them.) I even close the doggie door if I'm going out somewhere, in the offchance that one of them might figure out how to get down from the deck and run off to "find" me. I guess some pet owners are not thinking right when they let their dogs out to go wherever they please. Dogs don't understand how dangerous cars or trucks are! I had a Border Collie/English Setter mix who I'd let out in the fenced-in back yard. He jumped the 4 foot fence once and was hit by a car. He wasn't hurt seriously (whew!) but, from that point on, I chained him when he was outside. I had no idea he could jump a 4 foot high fence but, once I found out he could, he was not allowed in the yard without that chain! (I attached the chain to our clothesline so he could run back and forth without getting caught on anything. Worked great!) If you are a pet owner, you have a responsibility to ensure the safety of that pet. It makes me very angry when I see animals who are neglected or running around loose. I "saved" a purebred Beagle once. She was just wandering down a road by herself, no one else was anywhere near. It was night time. When I stopped, she came up to me and I saw that she was infested with fleas. That's when I knew I had to rescue her. Whoever owned her definitely did not deserve her! She was such a sweet little girl. I took her home and gave her a flea bath, then took her to a shelter the next day. (I couldn't keep her because my Border Collie/English Shepherd mix was VERY jealous!) By the way, that shelter I took her to doesn't euthanize. They also screen potential owners VERY thoroughly. That's why I took her there. I KNEW she'd get a good home.

Aww, that story touched my heart! You saved Lady from dying all alone and feeling abandoned! It sounds to me like her owners may have known she was sick and didn't want to deal with the expense of getting her to a vet or putting her down, so they just dumped her. You made it possible for her to have her suffering end in a much more dignified manner, not to mention a much less lingering fashion, as would have probably happened had you not found her and brought her home! So, you can also take consolation in that... you not only gave her a lot of love, but you helped to end her suffering and I'm sure she would tell you how much that meant to her if she could. It always hurts when we lose loved ones, and being an animal lover as you are, I know how quickly we can lose our hearts to our furry friends! I don't know for sure what happens when we die but, if Heaven really exists, I'm sure you'll see her happy face once again.

Oh, tell me more...I am mad at this dog owners. How come people let dogs run loose without thinking? This story like many other stories are supporting my feeling about dogs and other animals. They ARE smart, and they DO have feelings. I have learn from my dogs more that I ever learn from people about love and support when needed...and I can count on my dogs always...doesn't matter if big or miniature... When I take one of my dogs to Vet, the other one is sitting at the window waiting and crying...(hard to take two at once)... My cat is waiting for me and dogs when we are coming home after long walk....

Yes that really irritates me no end that the owners of the dogs didn't even realize their dogs were loose/missing until they saw the news item. animals are so smart-----and can sense many things---ever since I've had my bad bout of carpal tunnel and wrist strain I've noticed my Pyewacket cuddles up to me and is more affectionate than usual--he doesn't want his mom hurting

I saw this on the news the other day. Very touching story, and I am glad that the mother will be ok...just had a broken leg. Apparently the owner wasn't even aware that the dogs were out until he saw it on the news on tv. So sad that people pay no attention to their pets. We have a neighbor across the street who has several dogs in a fenced backyard. But there is stuff stacked up by the fence and the dogs have learned how to climb up to get over the fence so they are running free in the street every day. And the worst part is they know very well it happens but do not move the stuff away from the fence. God must love stupid people...He made so many of them.

Hey Pye, I've never doubted a Mother's love, even if it is a dog or cat. Maybe I should say especially if it is a dog or cat. I have had so many cats and dogs in my life, and so many stories. Our domestic animals are simply amazing. I had a Mama cat, when I lived in the Mountains of California, and she had just given birth to her litter. I left the back door slightly open so she could get out, like an idiot and while she slipped out to get some air, a male cat slipped in and kileed her kittens before I knew he was there. I grabbed a broom to chase him away and he freaked out and was litterally climbing my walls to get away from me. I was so upset that I just wanted to kill him. But he was too fast for me. My 2 year old was sleeping on my bed and I had to cover him to keep the male cat from hurting him. Finally the Mother cat came back and found her babies and she chased that male out so fast!! She cried and I cried so hard. It still makes me cry as I tell the story. I learned so many things the hard way. I had no idea that a male cat will kill the babies to bring the female back into heat. Now I'm going to watch the video of your story so I can wipe the tears away. Hugsssss leenie

Oh wow---I never heard of such a thing as what that male cat did---poor kitties and mama cat must have been frantic when she found out. I'm going to have to read up on that as it never happened to me and for awhile there a few of our female cats gave birth with unfixed males around and nothing like that happened--this was years ago by the way

i believe that animals specially our pets has this instinct to protect and care for their family members and other pets they have developed relationship with. it is just amazing to see it when they display that affection and concern towards each other. it just makes me think how beautiful the world if we humans care so much for each other just like they do. i know we care for our family. but i mean if there are no more violence in the world. only love and peace. that would be amazing.

I am moved by the story, but not at all surprised. I always believe that animals, just like us, also have feelings. A few years ago , I had a pet cat. What impressed me most was the affectionate way she looked into my eye everytime I stroked her fluffy head. I could definite feel her love and concern from her eyes. However, sadly enough, some people don't think so, in their opinion, animals are just animals, they don't have feelings, they don't have love or concern. That's totally wrong. I wish more people can realize the fact that animals also have feelings and we should treat them more kindly.

yes pyewacket, animals have feelings and they know how to show love and concern.I felt so touch after seeing the video.Well,I think the owner should not allow their dogs to run anywhere as they like.Who knows what will happen to their pets when there is no one there to watch them? The owner has the responsibility to take a look on their pets. Let them go anywhere they like without by their side is not a way to show your love to your pets.

why were the dogs roaming around in the streets by themselves like that anyway? that is not right. my late dogs were part of the family. they only go out when i go out, and i used to put them on leash so they dont run in the street all of the sudden and get into some kind of accident.

Awww, I haven't read the story but I don't need to. It's so great when anything, or anybody helps another out, family or not. This act of love given by this dog towards it's mother is just great. I am sure it must have impacted a lot of people that witnessed this, and I do hope that the mother will be alright and will be able to go back to it's home!

I totally believe that animals know and care for their litter mates, playmates, housemates, etc. I recently put my"big dog" Giant Schnauzer to sleep, and the other 3 dogs are still looking for her to hog the water bowl, crowd at the door, take all their toys, etc. You would think that they would be glad she was gone, but they are at the window looking for her, waiting at the door ( to be charged), etc. They loved her well as did I and are missing her, each in their own way. Why, I think even the big tabby cat misses her!!

I saw that story on the news. It was really brave for the son dog to stay with his momma. It brought a tear to my eye and I was really glad she was able to recover. I hope the owners of these poochies gets a stiff fine slapped on them. Can you imagine how horrified the two dogs were to find themselves on a busy street? I hope they secure their pets if they care about them. Who knows what could happen to them next? Thanks for bringing this discussion on myLot.

I recieved an email about that story and it brought to mind what happened when one of our dog's was hit by a car. Now for those of you who wonder why we would allow our dogs to roam it is simple we have a lot of grazing land and our dogs have the freedom to all of the land. To fence all of the property for anything other than large animals is senseless Sometimes they like to visit the other animals in the area (dogs are very social). Back to my story, this was a mother of a litter of puppies and the puppies were 10 weeks old. We had given away all but 4 of the puppies and the father of the puppies. When my husband and son brought the mama dog back to the property to bury her the daddy and 4 puppies sat quietly, with out moving for more than a few hours, while she was buried. One she was placed in the ground and covered the little ones became active again but the daddy sat on the drive way for 2 days. I know my dogs have feeling and are more connected to each other and us than we realize.

I've had some of my kitties die at home (old age mainly)---and it would be sudden...my other cats would form a circle around the cat as if to pay tribute to their friend and companion...so yes, animals do have strong emotional feelings
