I stole rocks

The town I live in is very small and very behind the times. So small no cable company offers it's services because there just aren't enough homes to pay the up keep for the cable system. So behind the times that we are just now getting fire hydrants installed. Finally, we're on our way into the 19th century! Well to install the hydrants all the water mains have to be replaced, so they dug ditches along the side of the road to pull out the old pipes and install the new and they left those ditches semi open, (like a foot deep), and left long piles of dirt along the ditches to fill them in later. I am digging new flower beds in my yard and wanted to boarder them with big rocks so my husband doesn't mow them down, cause he's in the habit of mowing down everything unless something obvious blocks him. Now in Missouri, we make rocks, big ones, little one, clear quarts rocks, flint rock, rocks with holes in them, you name them we make them! And they just dug up a whole bunch of rocks and left them in the dirt along the sides of all the roads. So I went across the street where the dirt is and I started picking out nice sized rocks for my garden. Now the house across the street is empty but still, I stood in the road and picked my rocks, rocks that came from what is actually city property. Not rocks that the city bought and brought in to fill the ditch with, but rocks that where under ground, brought to the top and are now being kicked into the road by trucks and kids and such. I'm on my third trip, cause I'm carrying them by hand and their heavy, when a neighbor drives by, stops and asks what I'm doing and I tell her. And she says, "So you're just gonna steal those rocks like that?" So yeah, I steal rocks. Better call the cops. Better yet, call SWAT, I do have a flower bed full of rocks ya know.

Come on down to Arkansas. I have some rocks for you. We grow them here too. These would be free so you could stop your life of crime.

And the worse part is, I didn't even need the rocks from outside the yard. I forgot I dug a bunch up in the back yard last month when turning soil for another garden. the shame, the shame.

I live in Bloomington,IN and I think that I could hook you up with just about as many rocks as you could ever use. And if you would still like to pursue your life of silica piracy, there are several quarries we could break into and have a blast robbing them of their gravel. I really hope your neighbor was joking. Oh and we grow rocks the size of dump trucks here in Btown. I really wish I had a photo, they're huge. Lot's of miracle grow and loads of time.

Several years ago I planted a rose bush started from a cutting by the deck. It was small and I didn't want the kids trampling it, so I made a rock border. I just used my own rocks. I had plenty I had tossed under the deck over the years.

i lived in a town about thirty minutes from knoxville and there are alot of huoses in the smokies that still just have the basics. it's so hard to get into the hills and mountains for one or two houses that they still do things the old fashioned way. i remember in my town where we only had one red light and i was the busiest intersection in town. the only reason they put the other red lights in was because we had to two teenagers get killed and one seriously injured at one intersection. they waited until they built the new highschool in 1997. up until that point there were 4 elementary schools that 3 went through 8th grade and maynardville elementary wet to 7th grade. those who were in the elementary school went to the highschool in 8th grade and from 8th grade on you were considered part of the highschool. so there was no jr. high or middle school until they built the new highschool in 1997. the old school had been there for 50 or so years. it took the town a long time to realize that it needed to come into the 21st century in order for the town to grow.

oh stealing rocks. or collecting. whatever you called it i love to have that hobby too. but not off the streets. i want those rocks on the seashore. if i only somewhere near those beach or ocean where i could walk around the sand and pick up some cute rocks and some rocks with unique shapes i would definitely could have collected a lot of it.

Hi,I think your neighbor is serious about this matter. It is no use of these rocks, right? Then bringing some rocks to your home and using these rocks is OK I think. My grandparents often pick up some flowers or such things to their home. They are happy to do this.

if they have been sitting there for so long and were underground till lately then it is obvious that no one needed them. And it is not stealing if you replace something that mother nature offers. It is not like you were carrying tons of them back to your house and selling them or something like it. So that is definitely not stealing. I know rocks can be a really nice touch up in gardens. My mother paints them white and puts them around the flowers. It looks really lovely. I hope your garden and flowers look great.

I am all for stealing rocks if that is the situation. THey most likely will not want to use them to bury the new pipes. And if they do then they can always haul them back. I have the same issue with my husband so I completly understand the need. Next time your neighbor goes by ask her to help you, you do need a partner in crime after all.

You are so BAD!!! Stealing those rocks!!!! I think it's just fine...who else is gonna use them. Was your neighbor really serious about it, or just joking around? And if the house across the street is empty, there's no one there that owns the rocks...I don't think the city will come looking for them, do you? What do you mean when you say in Missouri you make rocks?? I'm in Pennsylvania, and rocks can be bought at Busy Beaver, or I guess Home Depot or Lowes. Better stay in for a while or use a disguise!!! LOL!

Always good to see others in Missouri :) Assuming you werent taking enough rocks to make some giant rock wall or something, I really dont see it as being a big deal. It's a lot like the rock hounds who go out searching through fields to find interesting rocks--no one really yells at them for stealing :P I suppose technically you probably should have bought the rocks at a landscaping store or something, but really, it's just not that big of a deal. The city is most likely just going to load and haul all of the dirt and rocks to dump somewhere.
