Why do haircuts cost so much....?

.....and especially if you are a woman? I just do not understand how they can justify it? My partner can get a very good haircut for 10, maybe 15 pounds but I would need to pay triple that if not more!!!

The same reason they can charge you $100 for a few pieces of material & call it a swimsuit. Men would pay $10 for 3 times the amount of material. Women just fall for it in the name of fashion.

That is annoying too! When I was away on hols with my partner we both forgot to bring swimwear so out we went shopping - he got a pair of swimming trunks for around 15 GBP and I couldn't find anything for under 50! I didn't buy anything in the end...

No kidding, but then again, why are so many things overpriced (like medical appointments are often obsessively overpriced)! But for haircuts, here in the U.S., especially as we are all in a financial low, we are trying to save money. We've always been savers, and we actually try always to give one another haircuts. Really! The more we do it, the better we get, and know what each of us like. :o)

Wow! That's gotta take talent. I only need simple trims when I get my hair done, but even that, I can't imagine being able to do it myself. Good for you!

Thanks! It does take time but the money I save is worth it!

I think that's brilliant! I actually cut my own hair sometimes, yes it takes me a long while to do it but it saves so much cash in the long run which I can spend on other things!

In the US, I have never run across a hair stylist that charges more for a woman's cut than a man's. I'm not even sure that that would be legal....

Really? That does surprise me - I would have thought that the unfairness was all over the globe! Thanks for the reply.

That is obviously a great salon that you go to in that case. I guess I need to try and locate somewhere as fair as them.

I got mine cut and styled the other day for $20. But I went to the Wal Mart salon. I have been to other places that charge double or triple that and have not been back. The qualifications for a license are the same weather they charge 10 or 60 dollars. I do understand why they charge a bit more for women's cuts though. My husband's hait is so easy I cut it my self, but I want mine layered which is much different. I think that it has more to do with the fact that women will pay more where as most of the men I know would just shave their heads or keep it really short and do it them selfs.
@UK_Shree (3603)

Yes I can understand that they charge women more as it is more complex, but twice or thrice more is just plain silly. Or maybe it is the women who are plain silly as they are willing to pay it...

It would be worth it if the extra money went directly to the stylist. I always add a tip if a good job was done. And it does take about an hour to do my hair and it is short. I also never color it and so it is just a wash, cut, and dry/style.

sometimes it takes three times as long to cut a females hair. My husband is done in 15 minutes, it takes an hour for my hair to get cut, washed, blowenout and styled. you have to pay for her time and in my opinion my stylist is worth it.

that's no offense friend. it is really mind boggling the way haircuts are priced. in my country it is almost way half the price for a doctor consultation. i know hairstylists undergo seminars and trainings but...well, as they say, salons is one of the most lucrative of businesses.

It takes a great deal longer to cut and style a ladies hair than it does that of a male. Hair is longer, more complicated and there are so many different styles. Yes my husband can go get his hair cut for $15.00 but he is in and out in 15 minutes, I am in and out in an hour and it cost me about $30.00 for a cut, wash and style. If I get color etc it can be as high as $300.00

I think $30 for a cut wash and style is quite good. I got my hair coloured a few years ago and that cost £40. When I asked for a 'trim' to go with it, not even a full new haircut they said that would be another £40 making the grand total £80!!! I said 'no thanks' and just went for the colour.

If I get a color, which is a two step process with my hair, cut, style, wash and blow out it averages me close to $300.00 in the states. with my color they put one color on, wash my hair, dry it and then put the second color on. I do low lights and high lights as well as color. so it takes quite some time, i average three hours at the salon when I go, so to me it is worth it. You have to consider this is paying for products as well, the color, shampoo etc used.

Even I have wondered about this each time I have come out of a salon! Just a trimming is 350 INR!! No justification at all! Now, I hardly go for professional trimming. My mom does it for me. Only before any occasions I would opt for salons.

What I never got either was that long hair costs more than short hair when getting a haircut. Even though I was getting just a trim off the bottom and someone with short hair had to really get some styling and shaping done, mine always costs extra for "long hair"... Now, I get a free haircut once every 18 months. I donate my hair to Locks of Love for cancer children and they cut it for free. It takes 18 months to get about 12 inches of hair so that's the only time I cut it!

Here it depends on the hairdresser and location. The haircuts in big city cost much, mostly over 30 Ringgit. But in my hometown, it only costs about RM15-20.

Hi UK-shree, I noticed a huge drop in price when I left England for Greece, here my hairdresser charges just over 10 euros. She is very good and very popular and very fast, which I love. Don't have to sit there for hours chatting about holidays. Unlike the salons in England she works alone, she schedules her appointments for mornings and evenings and closes for siesta time in the afternoon. There is not much difference in the price for a man to have his hair cut either, he will probably pay only a couple of euros less.

Tell me about it, I almost always scream every time I fork out £35 for my hair trim, not even a cut! and recently since I had gum stuck to my hair I had to chop a lot off and I forked out £55!! I'm a former hairdresser but for some reason I can never do a decent cut on my self so I have to get someone to do it for me and they don't come cheap..I think its a conspiracy.. well like they always say.. beauty costs!

Not in my country.I spend only about 150 pesos for a haircut.I spend about 350 pesos for my hair spa and 300 for foot spa and pedicure.This is already expensive because I go to a salon in the malls.I love tha ambiance and the relaxation there.However, other salons offer hair cut for only 50 pesos.

here in my country haircut doesn't really cost that much. it only cost a bit more when you have it done by those famous hairstylists, or at their salon branches. barbershop here charges only a little over $1, and those at the salon charges a little more but still not over $1. and also here, the salon charges the same fee for both men and women haircuts.

I think that's very fair. It should be equal or almost (I understand styling female hair may be harder work) equal.

They cost so much maybe because, they people cutting their hair don't do it for free. They want to make your hair not look bad. It's good to buy a haircut for a good price. Some are way to high just to get a hair cut. I get mine from my sister she went to school for cosmotologist and she's good. :)

My experience is different also. I find getting a haircut cheaper for myself than what my husband pays. I pay only less than a pound for a haircut from a reputable saloon in the mall while my husband pays more when getas his from a barbershop somewhere.

I've never understood that. I went to a barber once and he cut my hair very nicely, that's before they caught on that women were trying to save money! I think that it'd probably be good for you and your friends to try bartering--does someone know a stylist that will cut hair in exchange for getting her house cleaned or her car washed or a nice meal that she doesn't have to cook, or babysitting? Others will have skills you can trade for, too, for some of yours. Although here in the States they are watching that like a hawk and looking to tax bartering, too! I've been letting mine grow. It's almost to where I can pull it back. I can clip it off my neck with pins and such and in another month it'll be comfortable, just in time for the beginning of the real summer heat.

This is why I have been cutting my hair at home. I cannot afford to spend like 20$ on just a hair cut for one day of looking good. I wish I could but it is really not in the budget. Take care and happy mylotting to you as well.

I have noticed the dramatic increase in prices for haircuts, they have actually doubled over the span of a few years. I remember when I could get my hair cut for about seven dollars but would have to pay fourteen dollars plus a tip if I want to get my hair cut. Keeping in mind that this is just a regular barbershop. My mother actually cuts all of our hair so we save money on that and she actually does such a good job and I have counted at the savings throughout the time because my hair grows so fast. The reasoning of why the haircut costs have gone up I guess is because of the economy there is not much that much demand for barbershops and with the higher costs the owner can cover costs.
@UK_Shree (3603)

Yes maybe the current economic climate does have something to do with it, but ever since I can remember it has been ridiculously expensive for a woman to get a haircut.
