Have you ever heard of a place called Hong Kong? Have you ever thought of planning to travel there? What is your image of Hong Kong in your mind? A tourism city with lots of shopping malls? A financial city with lots of high rise buildings? Or an old styled village like the countryside of your home country where people are outdated on technology?

Who hasn't heard of Hong Kong? (in the West anyway) I've never been there, but my cousin was stationed in Singapore for many years and regularly went to HK for shopping trips. The only bit of the city that's natural is the ocean. Many years ago it was a large, but culturally significent place, but now it's one great chunk of glass, concrete and metal. The only way you can live there is in a high rise appartment - I believe there are no houses as such. Not my kind of city - I like culture. Must be fascinating to visit, though - if only for the experience.

Thanks for your reply. It really seems that there are so many high rise buildings in Hong Kong where houses are getting rare. But considering there are 7 million people living there, it make senses that there are only more but not fewer high rise buildings. Yet, there are the countryside where streets are less crowded and high rise buildings are not so common.

Hong kong is a beautiful city, shoppers paradise and heaven for delicious chinese foods. I have been to Hong Kong few years back and I find the city too crowded and I see people walking on the street around the clock. There are many interesting tourist spots and the weather is cold. I would wish to visit Hong Kong again to shop in future.

Thanks for your reply. It seems shopping is one of the primary reason people are going to Hong Kong for. What do you usually buy when you are on a trip? I don't only mean to travel to Hong Kong but in general, what would you buy? OK, we all buy souvenir. But what else? I mean would you buy handbags? electronics? garments?

Yeah faisai, I like many things that are available in Hong Kong. I had been to Hong Kong 8 years back. Yeah I spent 3 days and 4 night vacation in that modern and advance big city. It’s really awesome to view the fascinating night scene of Hong Kong Island from Victoria Peak. We visited the spot during a drizzly night in December. We felt the severe cold in the cold wind. We were really amazing to see so many varieties of stuffs were available on the stalls in both temple street and ladies market. Besides clothes, ornaments and etc I loved the various types of foods served there. They were very close to taste of the foods in my place Happy posting

Thanks for your reply. After all these 8 years, there should be quite some changes since your last visit. I mean at least Disney is there now though there are plenty of Disney around the world already. :)

hi faisai! ^^ who wouldn't ever hear of Hongkong? especially here in Asia? its a very popular tourist destination and i think a lot of people here in the country has gone there, not me by the way, especially nowadays that tour promos are everywhere. whenever i think of Hongkong i think of the shopping district there. because it is popular to shopping freaks coz of the variety of stuffs you can buy there and they are not expensive. i also think of bright lights at night whenever i think of Hongkong. and i would just love to go there if i can have the extra money.

Thanks for your reply. I also believe that most people in Asia should have heard of Hong Kong as it is a so called international city in the region. But then, compared with other Asian cities, there seems to be less tourist attraction available in Hong Kong. I mean other than shopping and maybe food, there aren't many reasons left that others are talking about as why they would want to have a visit there.

i never been to hong kong before and in reality never thought to plan a travel there!! apart this, as hong kong i have an image of work in general as regards the manufactoring products ,especially in hi-tech products!! In reality i did not associate it to shopping, such as probably there is good shopping there but probably i would not buy there much because i would be frightned to buy a bad product or a copy that some tourists got it thinking to have a big affair and in reality it is not!! So i am located in western europe so i think it is far to visit there..and may be this is the real reason i never thought or planned ot get a trip there!!

Normally if i buy something when i am in a country where i did not know much i am very careful..so hong kong is famous to cheat?mmh i don' know may be China are famous to have big factories which they produce fake brands... as regards the country most far i visited..mmh...i think Israel in middle-east!!I never been to asia before..i was just in some european countries and middle east too!!may be if i would like to plan a country which is far from the first choice will be Us or Russia as well!!

Thanks for your reply. Is it widely believed that it is too easy to be cheated and got some copies or bad products from Hong Kong? It is really quite far away from western Europe to Hong Kong. So, what place it the most far away place you have ever visited? In fact the air tickets are getting cheaper these days so going to some places more far away is less costly then what it used to be.

Hi faisai, I thought that most people know about Hong Kong. It is a fabulous place and a very modern and happening place. we lived there for 3 years and I have some fantastic memories attached to Hong Kong. I loved the ferry trips we regularly made to and fro to Kowloon and shopping at the lanes at Central...I am planning to visit it again and I am very curious to know if it has remained the same after it was handed over to China..

Really? That sounds amazing ! And one tends to think that with the kind of media exposure we have one knows about everything, and HK is such a well known place, as a great tourist destination and as a commercial hub. I know I should visit it and see it again soon to relive all those memories..

Thanks for your reply. For your information, I know of a man who is an Italian living in the UK. I am not sure whether he had heard of Hong Kong or not but I know that he thought Hong Kong is just a place with outdated style of living where people are living like in the stone ages. From 1997 up to now, it had been 10+ years. Sounds like a long enough time to revisit a place to see how it has changed. :)

Hong Kong, former British colony - protectorate? anyway, it was leased to Britian as a place for China to do commerce with Britian, but still keep the outsiders out of China. Recently - well, for this old fart anyway, returned to China when the lease was up. Now a major commercial center for China with some what relaxed rules compared to other parts of China - tho it seems the the rest of China might be following the ways of Hong Kong rather than the other way around. I've seen Hong Kong in lots of films and documentaries, but, honestly, I doubt I will ever be able to travel there, in part because of the cost of traveling from the U.S. and in part because of my failing health. If I got to the far East, I'd honestly be more interested in going to Japan, because I've always loved many things about the culture there, and if I traveled futher, than to the mainland China - tho going to New Zealand and Australia holds a certain charm since I only speak English....

Thanks for your reply. Japan seems to be a hot place to visit for the unique culture they have and their special relationship with the US. Also, there are just so many new electronic gadgets coming out every month that it may be a good idea to visit there just to see how things can change so rapidly.

HongKong is located somewhere in Asia, and yes I have heard of it since I was just a child. My mom even told me that someday we'll be going there for a vacation. Too bad, due to the spread of H1N1 virus, I don't think that long-ago vacation plan will soon be realized.

I think everybody has heard of Hong Kong. I have been there several times and it is a very fascinating city. Many cruise ships call in there and there is a huge harbour for commercial traffic. It has many high rise buildings and the last time I was there many more were being built. There are many interesting places to visit in and around Hong Kong.

Thanks for your reply. As far as I know there are really more buildings being built all around Hong Kong. It is always said that Hong Kong is a relatively small place with lots of people and yet there are still more and more high rise buildings appearing every year. But then, as more and more buildings appear, those old buildings are being destructed which raise a lot of questions.

Hongkong is very near here in the Philippines. Many Filipinos go there for shopping they are well known to be the shopping capital. There many shopping malls and bazaar to choose from. They also have fake or imitation that all kinds branded items. I never been there because I don't have money you don't need to have a visa to go there. Many taking advantage of cheap products there so they buy products there in wholesale then they going to sell it here in the Philippines. Hongkong is small country but they are advance in technology.

Thanks for your reply. So, have you heard many people going to Hong Kong before? Did they buy those fake or imitation items intentionally or are they cheated somehow? What is your stand on those kind of things. Would you buy them if you know in advance that they are not the not produced by the original producers?

my dad works in hong kong and have been there for the past 20+ years. i used to visit hong kong 4 times a year to visit him at the same time. it is a bustling city where everyone is real busy. my image of the country is good except for the quality of its air. i always find myself developing sore throat when im there. however, the food of hong kong is too good for the air quality to deter you from going. remember if you do go to hong kong, always try the dessert stall there by the name of "xu liu shan". it specialises in mango desserts and can be found everywhere in the country.

Thanks for your reply. It is always said that the air in Hong Kong is not so good. I have once heard a guy on TV who said that the air in Australia is actually sweet and that their people do have great demand of clean air. He also mentioned that Hong Kong simply has a long way to go if it were to catch up with other places.

I have been to Hong Kong but only stayed there for about three hours just to meet my mom. I was waiting for our connecting flight to Manila. I have heard a lot about Hong Kong and have seen few scenes especially the urban side with all their tall buildings and shopping malls. I can say that Hong Kong has the best of both worlds though it may seem small in the world map. It has rural, countryside like areas and at the same time urbanized areas. Most of the time it's a mixture of the two. Someday I hope, I will be able to go back, explore more of Hong Kong through a week or up to month long holiday. Might take advantage of my 'asia miles'.

Hong Kong is a place in China. It's famous for all the shopping you can do there. Supposedly, prices there are cheaper than other countries. It depends on where you live though. People usually go there to visit Ocean Park and just do a lot of shopping. However, there is now Hong Kong Disneyland. It's really small compared to the ones in Florida and Japan but it's still worth a visit. Technically, it's a very crowded city with many places to shop.

I guess "a financial city with lots of high rise buildings" best describes Hong Kong. I went there when I was relatively young (before it return to China) and nothing's really memorable except Toys R Us. I guess there are a few historical landmarks relating to the British occupation and maybe a bit on Chinese culture, but I personally wouldn't recommend Hong Kong as a travel destination - it's good for business trips though and staying in five-star hotels.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, there are lots and lots of high rise buildings and that those more cultural things are not that easy to find. Yet, there are local tours that bring visitors around Hong Kong walking into the city looking for the history. Hope you can consider visiting in the future. :)

Hello faisai, I have yet to visit Hong Kong but the only thing that is familiar to me about Hong Kong is as a shopping haven. I heard that it is good to shop in Hong Kong and besides, there are aplenty of food to spoil your taste bud.

Hello faisai, Unfortunately it is not on my schedule for this year. I have been thinking to travel locally and used to do it at the end of the year. You are right that due to economic downturn, people prefer not to spend money for luxury vacation and etc. I hope to visit Hong Kong one day as I love shopping!

Thanks for your reply. Have you considered paying a visit there soon? But under the current financial crisis, most people are cutting their spending where the biggest one probably is to travel to other places. Just hope that this crisis can leave as soon as possible so we can travel around freely.

I love Hong Kong. During my two years in China, I made at least 10 trips to Hong Kong. It's bustling, full of energy, has great shopping and brilliant food. Teaching in a small town in China, I loved my trips to Hong Kong where I was once again surrounded by a more multi-cultural society. We tended to stay in the hostels along Nathan Road, but tried to explore different areas when we had the time. I love the Victoria Peak tram ride - great views and a nice escape.

I spent most of my time in Fogang when I was in China (a small town about 3 hours away from Guangzhou). Fogang was nothing like Hong Kong though - no one there spoke any English, and there were very few shops. It used to take about 5 hours to get from Fogang to Hong Kong. We would have to take a bus to Shenzhen and then the train to Hong Kong.

Thanks for your reply. Where did you stay when you were in China? As Hong Kong is part of China now, is it the city you stayed in similar to Hong Kong? Also, is it easy to travel from where you stayed to Hong Kong? It seems a good idea to visit other places in China while traveling to Hong Kong as they are located closely.

Thanks for your reply. How the cab drivers try to cheat you? I bet you would be so angry when you feel that you are cheated. Have you complained to the local police of these cheating behavior? I think I won't hesitate filing a complain to these people as they not only cheat that little money from me but also leave bad images to the visitors. These people really deserve some punishments.

There is a good way to avoid being cheated. You ask the price before you get on that cab,if necessary, you can ask several to get the general idea about the price, otherwise it is likely they would just take you aroud and charge you much more.

Yes, I've been there when I took my NCLEX exam or foreign Nursing exam since it's not given here in our country before. When we arrived there, the first thing I noticed was the cool breeze of air. I love the climate, the wonderful scenery of high rise buildings and the people were friendly. If I can find time and money I'll go there again together with my family.
