Do you listen to music while you write?

I know a lot of writers, myself included, need some sort of music to drown out the world while I'm writing. It really helps me focus and stay in the spirit of writing. Do you listen to music while you write, too? If so, what kind of music helps you stay most focused?

I listen to music when I do a lot of things, including writing, because I love music so much. I mostly listen to classical music. I find that it helps me to stay focused, because it keeps the attention of the back of my mind that would start wandering and make me lose focus on what I am doing. I was homeschooled, and I always found that I got better grades and did better work when I was listening to music during my study time. So I've continued to use music to keep my imaginations from running away with me, and to give me better concentration.

It's exactly the same for me! Minus the classical music. I need to have something with words. I'm not exactly sure why, but that's always the way my mind has worked.

I listen to music when I write for a few reasons. First, I absolutely love music and I don't think I could ever go a day without it. Secondly, I have to listen to it to drown out the noises of the world (mainly my sister and her boyfriend talking obnoxiously loudly in the hallway) so I have some sort of sense of peace and quiet. I can't say what type of music I usually listen to because it varies drastically depending on my mood. When I'm writing though, I usually prefer to have instrumentals because vocals in a track encourage me to sing along and can be very distracting. I'll get caught up in my own little world until the track ends and I realize I've done no writing as I intended!

I listen to music for exactly those reasons, too (minus the sister and her boyfriend). I use it to drown out the sounds of cars and stuff outside the window. xD

I often listen to music while I am writing, and I usually choose pop or rock music. When I paint I often listen to classical music, but when I am writing I prefer pop or rock. When I am writing I often choose a song in a language that I don't understand, so that I don't get distracted by the words. One of my favourite "writing songs" is the Finnish version of "Woman in love". I don't understand Finnish, but I love the song, and I get a feeling of happiness when I listen to it. The same thing happens when I listen to other songs that I really like and my happiness generally makes me more creative.

Hi phyrre, Yes, you put it rightly that music plays the role of stimulant as you feel relaxed when the music system is on and as you are all prepared to go for your wring job. Or it becomes sort of grave atmosphere around. Usually when I sit to mylot I play the the favorite numbers and get engrossed in my writing task. Attention towards the music however is less for I pay maximum heed to what I am writing. At this listening to music is secondary and writing is the primary work. Of course when I pause to think and arrange the sentences music comes to the foreground.

I like listening to music while writing, but sometimes I have to control myself and keep away from this temptation in order to concentrate.I don't know whether it makes sense or not that music distracts attention but I truly hope it not.So phyrre, will you be able to focus when writing with music? Is there some music on the contrary can help you concentrat on the words?

There are many times I find myself able to be more creative with my writing when I am listening to music or something. There are times that I have done so when it is quiet, but for the most part I hate trying to write for some reason when it is really quiet. I think it is about the same when posting in here as well.

I'm not sure if I can listen to music while I write. I think there are some people who can probably do it, but I do need to focus on some things. I think there are some people who are clear on this, but I don't know that it is something that I can do on an ongoing basis. I do like to write and usually watch TV while I write.

Sometimes, I do listen to music, while I write, but it really doesn't happen very often at all. I do listen to music occasionally, but for some reason, I just listen to music while I write, very often at all.
