I buy generic whenever possible, unless it's something we just have to have name brand. Instant potatoes, when I buy them, are one of those things that have to be name brand, the generic just don't come out well. I ran out of cheese slices this week, and didn't feel like driving all the way to Walmart to get them. I went to the convenience store down the road. They had name brand Kraft cheese slices on sale, buy one get one. I bought them. My husband hates them! He won't eat them. He wants me to go to Walmart and buy the generic cheese slices. Have you ever perferred a generic brand over a name brand?

I haven't ever preferred a generic brand. Just talking about food here, but basically if it tastes the same to me, OK, it's cheaper, I buy it. If it tastes different (cream of mushroom soup, for example), I buy the name brand.

I will buy generic soups if I'm putting into a recipe.. for instance I have this beef and gravy recipe where the gravy is made up of cream of mushroom, cream of celery, golden mushroom, and dry onion soup mix. All of the above soups would be generic except the golden mushroom only because that one doesn't come in generic form. Now if I want soup and sandwiches for lunch, I'll get a name brand soup.

Sounds about right, if it's mixed with other stuff, I don't care if it tastes slightly differently.

Baked beans and tomato ketchup are a couple of items where the brand name tastes so much better. I buy own brand goods most of the time though, the extra you have to pay normally isn't worth it. I deliberately buy a really cheap 'Value' brand of peanut butter though, as it tastes so much better than the more expensive equivalents.

Oh yeah, I agree, baked beans for me have to be Bush's. Grandma Brown's is a local brand, but I don't like how they look, so I won't even try them. For me it's always been Bush's baked beans.

We usually stick to generic too. Like you said there are just some things that do not taste good generic though. I can't really think of anything name brand though that we prefer generic. I don't usually pay attention which is which when I am cooking, just when I am buying lol.

I prefer the name brands but if money is tight and have to make it last for some reason or the other i'll buy the generic brands. But on some things you do have to buy the name brands because they taste better or as you said come out better. My oldest boy is picky when it comes to Cheese and he'll only eat one brand and if you dont buy that he wont eat it.My youngest boy hes picky when it comes to food depending on what it is.Sometimes you just have to go with what taste better.

I rarely pay any attention to the brand names when I go shopping and usually just buy what is best value. But one generic product which I always buy is Sainsburys (UK Supermarket) bargain buy Mature cheddar. It not only has the best flavour and consistency, nice and crumbly, but it works out at about half the price of some of the branded cheeses.

I prefer generic pudding to jello brand. For some reason when I make jello brand pudding little clumps of powder are left in the pudding, but when I use the generic that never happens. It just mixes better. I think it tastes better too, but then again consistency can make things taste different. I always buy sugar free pudding mix so maybe the sugary stuff is different, but for sugar free pudding... generic is the way to go.

Can't think of anything. But we shop at Aldis which is mostly generic and thagt's what we buy. They do have generic brands that same the exact same as the name bran d, especially their cereal and their peanut butter. The Peanut butter is the same as Jif, which is of course, much more expensive. And the cereal, Millville, is very good. Again, no difference. My girlfriend's daughter has said that Meiger brand choclate milk is better than any name brand.

I also buy generic if it is a better deal and hubby started to do the same. There are somethings that I won't buy the generic brand for. Noxezema the generic brand burns the crap out of my face. Head and shoulders the generic brand made my hair really dry. Couponing now I do buy more name brand things then I did before. Alot of times its a better deal. I just love when I can get name brand things free.

When it comes to medicine i prefer generic because it is cheaper than branded. The contains are the same, only that branded is expensive than generic because of the name of the brand. When it comes to other things i prefer generic than branded one.

Definately. Some stores have really awesome store brands. Jewel for instance has some of the best soft chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. I almost always buy generic, there are some things that are name brand that I really like though like Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ hands down the best BBQ sauce in a bottle

I don't know that generic has ever been better than the brand name. I do know that the generic is often made by the same company as the brand. Maybe you got a cheese that was from a different company than the one that makes the generic you usually buy.

I always buy generic cause I'm cheap. I can admit, I am not ashamed. Anyway, my baby grew up poor, and I'm cheap so he's just used to eating generic or "poor folks food" you know, like ham hocks and beans and weird casseroles and stuff. Anyway, there are only two things that I don't buy generic, well three if you count milk but I honestly couldn't tell you what a brand name in a jug of milk is. I have been pretty much brain washed to think about milk by its color, so I always get the red one. One time it bit me in the butt because the red was skim and my beau complained and moaned until I went back and got D. Anyway, I don't buy generic mac n cheese because the Kraft powder tastes the best and I don't buy generic butter. We like real butter at my house and I because I am health conscious I get the unsalted, so I pretty much have to get land-o-lakes.
