Is Your Dog Or Cat Afraid Of Thunderstorms?

My Nervous Puppy - Louie always gets nervous and cries when there is a thunderstorm. How can I calm him down?

It has been raining here for the last three or four days. It stopped for a while today but now there is a big thunderstorm brewing. There has been quite a bit of lightening and the thunder is very loud. My cat is just lounging on the couch, but my dog is starting to pace the house and whine. Do your pets do this when it storms out even when they are in the house with you? What do you do to calm them down? I tried petting the dog and having him sit by me but he wants to keep pacing, what works for you and your pet?

We have 4 dogs, 3 are not bothered a bit by thunderstorms but 1 (the physically biggest and strongest) lays between the coffee table and couch and puts her head under the couch. every now and then she'll poke her head out to see if all is clear, if it thunders again she hides away again..... she does this even if there's a thunder storm in a movie or programme on TV.......stupid dog

Someone else said earlier that her big dog was more afraid than the little dog. It does seem like the bigger dogs would be more brave but it seems to be the opposite. I think that would be funny to be watching a movie and have my dog hide if he heard a storm on television, LOL!

I have 3 dogs, two are older, and one is about 2 years old, and all 3 go absolutely ballistic during thunderstorms. The one dog always tries to go under my legs when I am sitting in a chair, or under the blankets if I am in bed.

Seeing how my dog was last night when that was going on I can't even imagine how loud it would be in here if I had 3 dogs like you do.:)

One of my dogs is very nervous and afraid of any noise including thunderstorm. She needs to be very close. Usually she is hiding behind my legs, or during the night she is cuddling with her head laced on my head.

My cat is cool as a cucumber when it comes to stuff like this too and he's an indoor cat too. He just kind of looks at the dog like "what are you doing?" Thanks for saying my dog is cute. His name is King Louie and he's 4 years old but I still call him my puppy.:)

My dog is also afraid of thunderstorms. This is because she hates loud noises (I'm still clueless as to why). Whenever she hears thunder or heavy rain, she would stand up on her hind legs and scratch me or one of my family. This means she wants you to carry her (she's a little dog so it's really no problem carrying her) or put her on the bed.

my dog gets a little nervous when the rain comes, but not too nervous.when the rain falls and the thunder comes near, she will sit closely to me with her ears pointed, and i will pat her on the head and gently whisper to her:"that's all right, nothing"etc to comfort her. then she always falls asleep by me on the sofa where I would like to sleep too.

Hello dfinster. My dog, Footlong who is a bassethound is afraid of the thunder. Whenever she hears a thunder, she pushes through our door to let herself inside. She stays at the garage. I sometimes accompany her there when there is a thunder. She hides under a table until the sound is gone.

This is a really good discussion, and I am sure that a lot of people out there have pets, because pets make our lives better, and if you do not have pets, than things are too quiet if you ask me,and I am sure there are a lot of people who have dogs, and then I am sure there are a lot of people who have cats, and out of those I am sure there are some who have dogs or cats that are afraid of thunderstorms, and then I am sure there are ones who have dogs and cats who are not afraid of thunderstorms, and I can understand that different breeds of cats and dogs, can make them fear different things, and act differently toward different things,my family has two chihuahuas and one tabby cat,the two chihuahuas are afraid of thunderstorms and they always seem to pace around when they hit,and it seems every chihuahua we have ever had has been afraid of storms,so I wonder if it is in their breed, but the cat never seems bothered by thunderstorms and she will lay around and sleep without even giving much notice to the storm, and I do not think I have ever seen a cat who was afraid of storms, have a great day, good luck with your life, and all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

Hi, generally it seems the people with cats have them acts a lot calmer than the people with dogs. I have gotten some really good advice with this discussion though. You're right in that I think I would be so lonely without my pets and the apartment I will be moving into in a few weeks would be too quiet for me to handle.

Yeah I would definitely agree with you there, and that is good that you have gotten some good advice on this discussion, and mylot is a good place to meet new people and learn new things, and you can also learn new ways to do things, that you might have never thought of before, and I am sure a lot of people could not handle the quiet of no pets, have a great day, good luck with your life, and all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

He's an indoor dog and so is the cat. But if I'm outside and it really starts to thunder and stuff before it rains, when it starts to get loud he wants in the house.

I was angry at them the day i answered that. I found a couple piles hidden ina corner. They scatter away when they see me come with the pooper scooper. Is your pet inside & outside? Mine are just inside. They act like they dont even know there is a outside unless they hear a bird near the window or a stray cat.

I don't know what triggers animals to be afraid of the thunder. Maybe the loud noise hurts there ears. I am not sure. But I do know some of them get very afraid of it.

I don't think that I've ever had a really nervous pet! Our dogs hid underneath our back deck when it rained (it was turned into an addition when I got older so it was very nice and dry!) Our cat somehow go into our ventilation system because he was afraid of the dogs and the dogs couldn't reach him in the vents. Of course my mom had a cow when she started to sneeze up a storm every time the AC or the heater would turn on!

My pug was not afraid of thunderstorms before, but he started being afraid of it last year. This is quite confusing me, last year in summer time, he was so nervous looking at me when there was thunderstorms outside, sitting by my bed and looking at me without blinking and breathing heavily. That's quite strange, as he was 8 years old when it happened. I don't know why he started being afraid of thunderstorms while he was okay with it when he was younger. And I didn't have a good sleep last year during summer time, he disturbed me so much but I couldn't comfort him as he felt so nervous and kept making annoying noise. He is not afraid of thunderstorms now, the beginning of this June, there's thunderstorms here and he was fine. When a long roll of thunder started, he was looking at me again, but this time I just threw him his most favorite ball and played with him for a while, after we played the ball he went back to his bed and fell asleep. That proves my hubbby's words correct, he told me don't let the dog focus on negative things, the better way is to draw his attention from the negatives and he finally doesn't mind the negatives at all.

I think you and some others here have a good point about distracting the dog when that happens. I did that right when he was a puppy and he was alright, so maybe I need to start doing that again to kind of retrain him.

Yes, I think you should train your dog again, let's play with him, then he would forget the thunderstorms outside. That really works.

Oh yes, my dog will whine and hide under the table or couch everytime he hears the sound of thunderstorms. I feel sorry for him, it feels like he thought that the sky might fall on him. I usually reach out for him and hug him, it would help to calm him. I also give him some water or milk to drink, and tell him that everything will be alright. He's frighten by the thunderstorms and usually to have me close to him will make my dog feel a lot better.

Hi dfinster, while during thunderstorm, I find my pet cat would stand still once listening to the loud noise causing by the thunder. She would stand still and stares at the same direction for quite a moment. I wonder whether the dreadful noise has really made her feeling frightened. I pity her and usually would like to embrace her in my arms and pat her softly. She stays comfortably and calmly in my cuddle without any fear anymore My old pet dog seems to have nothing happened to it totally. He just sleeps quietly and enjoyably as usual under the dinner table. The lightning and thunder just like water off a duck's back. may be he is a male and brave dog, as well as he has experienced lots of thunderstorms days before. Happy posting

A few years ago, we had a dog that was petrified of thunderstorms and lightning - he would pace up and down just like yours, although he didn't whine, but he would pant like crazy with a wierd look in his eyes. The only thing that would kinda calm him down was if my hubby cuddled him and sang to him! Honestly. He was still nervous, but not at much. They do say that you should just ignore your pet and not make a big deal of it, but it's very hard to ignore when they carry on like that!

Hi abbey, I'll go with you on the cuddling thing when he's scared, but if I tried to sing to him I'm afraid he would go from whinig to outright howling, lol!

Not so much, our dog stays pretty calm during storms. It's our neighbors motorcycle that scares her. He likes to rev it. Sometimes that makes her pee on the floor.

Yes. My Jack Russell Terrier is totally terrified of thunderstorms. I think it is the loud thunder that scares her. Whenever a thunderstorm approaches, she'll stick close to me and once the first thunder sounds, she'll try to leap onto me. She'd have to sit on my lap to make her feel better. I don't know why, but that's the only way to calm her down. I was thinking, thank goodness she's a small dog. I mean, imagine a huge doberman or husky sitting on you.

I had a pet dog that gets frightened of thunderstorms. My dog's name is brandy but unfortunately he pass away last October 2007. Brandy also pace the house and whines, he even scratches the door to let him in while whining. As if he was saying, Please let me in! I'm scared of the thunderstorms. I remember brandy when we let him in, he hides under the sofa or hides at the back of our television set. He covers her face beneath the furniture. There is nothing we can do about it. He just stops hiding when the thunderstorms disappear. :-)
