The boss may be keeping these kind of terms to keep his workers focus on the job and not other things outside of work... It seems harsh but from the bosses prosective; having employees that are focus on the job versus an employee that has a personal life that may interfere with the job.. Its better to have them working more, so they are more productive. The downside to have this kind of power over his employees his turnover rate will be high, if the pay is not good enough.

I think that your friend was being tested by his boss if he is really capable for the job. If his boss sees his desire and potential for the position then his boss will give him at least 1 day rest.

I think the offer is not an intent that the staff need to work 24/7, perhaps he is required to be on standby for 24/7. This is common among sales and support staff and I believe there is compensation benefit in lieu of the standby hours.

Does he work those hours or is he on call, meaning he can eat, sleep etc but must be available to talk on the phone? I use to work a job like that where I was on call 24/7 for two weeks and off for one week. That meant I was available to go out and service a machine any time of the day or night.

Hi, I think the employer needs your friend to standby for any urgent task. Its simply impossible for someone to work for 24 hours. There will be no quality of life if someone works for 24 hours a day. I am just wondering if such clauses will be against some Employment law.

This is what the employer checks the working capacity and enthusiasm of an employee. 24 X 7 X 365 means he may call for work anytime. But it does not means that en employee has to work for (24 hours X 365 days ) = 8760 hours. It just tests his working capabilities.

The boss wants him to be on call. It often is the case with a salaried position.

maybe it meant that he's on call 24/7.a lot of jobs are like that, especially those that have clients from different countries.each country has different timezones,so the person handling their accounts can be contacted at their convenient hours.it's up to your friend is he will accept the job,if the agreement is ok with him.
