This is a long, amazing article about genetic testing of both wild and domestic cats and tracking the domestication of them.
Its a lovely article and shows that all domestic cats are related to the wild cat of the middle east and none of the other 4 genetic stock of small wild cats.
It also shows how close to the orginal wild cat the domestic breed still is.
You guys know how I feel about cats, well, here is more interesting info for my other cat loving friends!

Wow! The domestication of the house cat is a really interesting story. Thanks for posting that link. I've definately learned something new about my furry companions. I love cats too. I think there was only one point in my life where I didn't have a cat, and it didn't seem right somehow. I don't really know how to explain it but life just seems more interesting with them around:)

[b]Yeah, go figure. I'm always a bit puzzled by those folks who like cats & dogs equally. Maybe it has to do with left brain & right brain?
I use both brains almost equally, though I do have a bad math block....

[b]You have no need to explain it; every cat lover already knows just what you're talking about.

Cats are so smart, maybe they domesticated people....
My dogs let my little cat to do whatever she likes, including trying of their favorite food...she domesticated two of my dogs...and me...

My cat is cute, smart, loyal, tamed and passionate....she is running to me when I call her...with funny noise almost like saying..."she likes me, she really likes me"

[b]I think you're talking about a sound they make I sometimes call "trilling," & at other times, "murdling." The sound happens when they give a happy meow, while purring. I crave that sound. It never fails to cheer me.

[b]I think eventually all this will be thrown out, when they finally realize (or admit) that cats are all aliens from outer space, & they, ages ago, trained us to be their servants. Willingly.

THANKS for sharing, ELIC. I knew u were a cat lover which is good. I like cats but we were never allowed to have a cat when i was growing up. For some reason my mother hated cats. I like to hear them purr,my son called purring, perking when he was little.

I never understood why mother hated cats like she did. she didn't particularly like dogs till she was older. I don't think she was afraid of them, don't know what it was. MY dad was always crazy about dogs & we always had one when i was a kid. I STILL HAVE A DOG WHO IS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD. Have a great sunday.Hope ur mom has a good day to.

Thank you so much, interesting stuff. It is nice to relate to another car person. I have a couple of felines that I adore and a dog. I love my dog very much but with my cats it is different, they fascinate me, I love watching them and I always have to have at least one with me; they somehow take a lot of my stress away.

OK 29 is rather a lot! I would love to have that many minus the clean ups, one of mine threw up on the floor about 5 minutes ago, ah...the joy of pet ownership!

It was interesting to learn that the "domestication' of cats went as far back as 10,000 years---does make one wonder why since as the article says other animals were domesticated by man for workloads, providing milk and of course food, while kitties are just "there" to be charming to us....

sure, they were charming, but they also kept the vermin out of the food, very important since this was before the days of other kinds of mouse traps, and honestly, nature couldn't design a better one
and you may love cats, but you are restricted to only having 2, whereas, I'm currently up to 29....

I sure wish I could have more than two
I guess people learned the hard way how valuable cats really were during the Middle Ages...when they were busy killing them off due to being thought to be linked to witches...and gee, then the plague hit...the cats weren't there/around to kill off the plague-infested vermin

I'm always telling my husband they all came from Egypt and think they should be worshipped as temple cats. After all, aren't we their loyal, devoted servants?

well, they all come from the middle east (that includes the area around Iraq and Iran) but only the Egyptians understood they needed to be worshipped. You know the saying, "Cats were once worshipped as gods and they have never forgotten it."
Actually, I think they were worshipped because they already knew it - and that's why the other empires in the middle east didn't worship them, they wanted subservient animals unless they were really wild like lions.

Amazing that they can make that kind of a determination!

Hi st. Eli'o the cats,
That is amazing, that cat looked so regal just posing there on the cushion and it is amazing to think the cats goes back all these years and does nothing, what a great life to be a cat lol! and yes I'm a cat person too and always have cats, even when I was a child, my mother had cats for us so I grew up loveing cats but saying that I love dogs too but never had one, tell a lie I did a long time ago, it was a puppy and my cousin took a shine him and my hubby gived it to him, that broke my heart as we only had the puppy for a few weeks.

Hey Elic! Thanks for the info! I am also a huge cat fan too and
love to learn as much as I can about their heritage! It is
so fascinating! It is so true how close the domestic cats
are to their wild anscestors and how little most people
realize it! I will never get tired of learning more things
about cats! I just love to watch my babies everyday to see
what else I can learn just by watching the silly little things
that they do! Thanks for the info!

Glad you liked the article, I found it interesting as well. I did know that cats were the last animals domesticated in the stone age, and really, they sort of domesticated themselves rather than the active actions of domestication that went on in other animals. Sure, the kittens were adventually brought into the homes and taken care of, but it only takes one generation to revert to feral.

By any chance, do you have a cat blog? Because if you don't you should definitely start one! Might as well get paid for all the cat talk.
