I let them get to me.

I can't believe that I let them get to me the way they did.
I made the mistake today of responding to a discussion that was started about the vaccine used to fight this new flu strain. h1N1 or whatever they're calling it since complaints by the pork industry made them quit calling it swine flu.
I simply asked if we could do vaccines in the schools to combat the flu, why could they not find a way to vaccinate kids against bacterial meningitis which kills hundreds of young people every year.
In less than 10 minutes I had been blasted by another member. She went on this tirade about how all vaccines were the devil's medicine and were pointless and she didn't understand how any parent who loved their child would give them any vaccine.
I tried to explain in a nice way that she was entitled to her opinion and I would still have mine, and she got me again. Well, then I got mad and came back with the advice that she should write to my friend Susan who lost her only son to bacterial meningitis as a college freshman and tell HER that she had done the right thing by not vaccinating her son. That his senseless death....( Susan tells people now Kyle's death could have been prevented with a simple vaccine that they didn't get because her insurance felt it was an elective treatment and wouldn't pay for and they didn't have $175 to spare that week)....was justified because perhaps the side effects from the vaccine might have made him sick. I even offered to give her Susan's e-mail address.
She had the nerve to tell me that everyone had a story and not all of them had happy endings. I don't understand where she gets off telling me that I'm a bad mother because I choose to get my daughter vaccinated against something that could kill her if she gets it!
I know I shouldn't have let them get to me, but geez!

Hi My Friend.....you know what..It takes all kinds to make the world go around and some just know how to brake quicker than others.
All we can do is pray that this person does not have to eat her words before she leaves this world herself. When you can't see the good in something for worrying about the bad then that is pretty sad i say.
I got all my children all their vaccines as they were growing up and all of my grandchildren are up to date on theirs and I have even made an appointment to take my oldest grandaughter that lives with us to the doctor to get the Gardisill vaccine for cervical cancer. If getting this can prevent her from getting cancer then you better believe that I will make sure she gets it.

I'm still a little leery about Gardisill, but I would never berate someone for having their daughter/granddaughter vaccinated. I just want to see more clinical test results before I suggest to the girls they get it.
But having lived first hand the results that happen if you don't have your children vaccinated against Bacterial Meningitis before going to college and living in the dorm....no way would I not have them get the shot.

Yes, I can see where you would want your daughter to get those vaccines. Menningitis can kill in less than 24 hours....even if your child is perfectly healthy. For someone like your father who has had a heart transplant and is frail health wise anyway...I can't imagine how devastating the results of getting any of these diesases would be.

Thanks for your input on the menningitis vaccine. Her doctor has suggested that as well as the hepitis ones for her because of her grandfather having a heart transplant.
So you can see these vaccines are very important for her to get as he is unable to fight off infection.

Rabid. I know the word refers to dogs quite frequently, but it is also a word that can apply to some mylot members. When answering discussions I know will get a strong response, I usually add I know people will disagree with me, so please don't attack me for my opinion. And guess what? That doesn't always work! We also have paranoid people on here. No, you guys, I'm not talking about people who don't believe in vaccines...that's not my point.
I know it is discouraging. I try to think of these people as people who can't possibly have many friends if that is how they behave. They probably tell people they have lots of friends...but they really don't. They have some kind of ugliness in them if they can't even be civil on the internet. And sometimes the pity I have for a person like that overrules my anger. Sometimes.

I should know better than to let them goad me though. I felt really bad that I lost my temper. Of course when my husband read it he laughed and said "Wow, honey I don't think you were real clear, perhaps you should tell us how you really feel about meningitis vaccines!"
Well, let me tell you how I feel! Today, my dad's neck started hurting, he had a seizure yesterday and he's running a fever. You know what they're looking for? YEP!
They diagnosed another man with bacterial meningitis in the cardiology clinic on Monday an hour after they sent dad upstairs for a heart cath.

Paula, How did things come out about your dad? I have not seen anything, but sometimes I do not get notifications. I hope you had good news.

He is currently wearing a heart monitor for 30 days so they can get a better reading on what is going on with his heart and blood pressure. He had some kind of test last week that tested his dizziness and he about fell off the treadmill he got so disoriented. They stopped the test and wouldn't finish it.

I've learned with time that some people just thrive on telling others they are wrong or by trying to make them look bad. I've been 'attached' a couple of times here and have found that the best thing to do is just ignore them. Ok, no way I can ignore them but have a couple friends I know I can message here if I'm feeling bad about something someone said and they always manage to cheer me up, make me laugh, or get my mind off the 'jerk' that is attaching...
I think I know you well enough to know you ARE a good mother and each of us has to make the choices we feel are best - I had my kids vaccinated when they were young so guess I'm a bad mother too - NOT

The only way to completely keep our kids safe is to keep them locked in a padded room and not let them have any social or physical contact with anybody. But what kind of people will they become if we did that? Certainly not a well rounded one with the world ahead of them like mine are.

Very very true - I know I had a very difficult time 'letting' go of my kids but for the most part I have got to say I raised 3 out of 4 very reliant, independant, and strong adults. Keeping them in a padded room it has been proven developes total mental cases.

I know! Not to mention the fact that someday they grow up and when they get out of the padded room and into the real world they're going to be hit with situations that they have no idea how to relate to.

I have three kids, two are college age, I have always promoted getting them their shots and keep them updated for the simple fact that I would rather see them hurt for a day or so after the shots, than to see them deathly ill from something else that could kill them.
I would wonder though, the person that got upset with you, how old were their kids? Seems that you can't get your kids into very many schools unless their shots are up to date.
For someone to say that you're a bad mother because you get your kids shots....I think that person needs to re-evaluate their way of thinking.
Don't let the ones here that want to blast you for something get to you, some people just don't have anything else to do, anyone to direct their anger towards or don't know what to do with it all.
The best judge of whether you are a good mother or not is you and your kids.....their opinion should be the only one that matters!

You can file an affadavit if your religion prohibits you from getting the shots. it has to be signed by a pediatrician/family practice physician. We had a few when i worked at the school who had these in their charts. I just see no need in taking the chance of them getting something that could kill them!

A shot only hurts for a few minutes or at the very most, a day or so. But to be confined to a wheelchair would be a fate that many would not begin to understand how awful it could truly be. Although many that are wheelchair bound live very productive lives, there are still downfalls to it that I can only imagine.

some people just live to cause trouble and they are just "nay sayers" to everything that makes sense to everyone else. this person was just an attention getter and obviously doesnt care who she hurts or what she has to say just to get attention.whats it to her if you want to do everything you can for your childs well being. its not her child or her business.

My mother walks with a limp from having a childhood case of polio. She always encouraged me to get my kids their shots. She grew up in a rural area, prior to the time when polio vaccines weren't normal, nor tested. Had she been vaccinated, I'm sure she wouldn't have the problems she has now with what the doctors say is post polio disease!

SO many of those afflicted with polio as children have horrible residuals later in life. My mother, and an aunt on my dad's site both have post polio disease. It is akin to rheumatoid arthritis, but so much worse! My mom's legs will jerk involuntarily while she is doing nothing more than sitting in the recliner to watch television.

i know what you mean. there was a girl in kentucky i knew named mary that was a beautiful girl, we were both 12 yrs. she had to wear big braces on her legs and had had polio because her parents hadnt thought to get her vaccinated. it was so sad. she would have us run and dance in front of her even tho i didnt want to. but she laughed and was so sweet all the time in spite of it all. i always wondered what happened to her later.

I know and I shouldn't let them get to me, but I did anyway. I think alot of it had to do with the fact that I was tired and stressed last night and what she said about my children just went all over me. You can attack me all you want, but leave my kids out of it!

I can't help but get frustrated by people sometimes too. But if it helps I agree with you completely! I even watched a Law & Order rerun recently that dealt with this issue except some other disease. It was pretty interesting.

We recently had a family near us who came close to losing their child to the swine flu. She picked it up at camp, and brought it home. There were 15 kids from the same cheerleading camp that were diagnosed with the virus. I just think that a simple shot would have kept these kiddo from getting as sick as they did.

Oh no, they knew I was for it. They flat told me that they were against any and all vaccines. I have read other discussions they've started and and responded to and they are all the same. Much like a pack of wild dogs attacking a defenseless rabbit. They keep on and on until finally their latest victim either gets angry or just goes away.
