Well, I hae when praying to God, you say his name long enough you will speak in tongues if you believe in God. So has anyone did this before? I thought about this discussion when a person here asks me did i speak a differner language. A lot of people don't believe they can do his but I know for a fact it can be done. I have did this, So tell me what you think about this. if you are not religious don't say I don't believe in God. I do believe in God. Some Church don't believe in doing this. ok, give me your views I know that everyone has different Religions. Have a Blessed day anyway!

Speaking in tongues. Hello marciascott, i have spoken in tongues before and sometime I will do it on a daily bases, it is a prayer language intended for the believer to speak directly to God. For example, one or two words spoken in english is nothing compared to speaking in tongues, Tongues cover a whole lot more. Hope you can understand that. Anyhow I first learned about it in church then I began to read about it and I learned a lot from the book called, walk of the spirit, walk of power. You should definitely read it if you want to learn more about speaking in tongues, I found it to be very informative. Well if you read the bible it don't go into as much detail as the author of the book does. I have nothing against reading the bible but sometimes using other books as a reference can help me to understand more. For example, when I was reading "Walk of the spirit, walk of power". I felt as though the author really helped to break things down and to make it God's word so plain that even a child could understand it. Anyhow add me as a friend and we'll talk more about it when we pm each other. Take care for now............. It's night night time so I gotta run because I am too tired to carry on any further but thanks for posting, it was a really good topic. Hope you have a great night and that you won't ever allow anyone to try to stop you from speaking in tongues, I've had my share of adversaries to deal with in that department but the devil can't stop us, he can only try to bring fear and confusion. So don't be decieved, you must keep on keeping on in order to grown in the Lord........be blessed!

Hi marciascott, when you speak in tongues do you agree that nobody understands what you are saying? Maybe God do, but, do you know and understand what you are uttering? To answer your question, I speak only English. Know no other tongue.

i don't know what believing in God has to do with talking in tongues. from what i understand, talkiing in tongues just means speaking a different language from your own. i just don't get the whole thing.

I don't know... I was once told that only true christians speak in tongues... I never have... I have also been told God uses this phenomenom to reach out to those who don't speak your language... I don't dispute that it can happen I only dispute that just because it has not happened to me by say me speaking German at a German man spontaneously that doesn't mean I am not a TrUE Christian... There are many people walking this earth without god and it could be the person speaking english right next to you... Which in the days of the Disciples would have been a foreign tongue... Maybe I have reached people that God wanted me to in my own tongue... I have also heard that speaking in tongues was to speak in angel language so that the Devil couldn't understand you... This logic in a Christian surprises me.... The Devil WAS and STILL IS the Angel of Light.. So how would you fool him by speaking a language he understands? I guess in the end that if God wants something to happen it will even if it means a person speaking in a different language nothing is beyond God's power!

I was not saying I didn't believe it happend or that it was not a sign of being with God... What I am saying is I do not believe the people who say to not have spoken in tongues means you will not get into heaven because it is supposed to be a requirement... To my knowledge the ONLY requirement of entrance into heaven is to ask Christ into your heart! And yes I was told this just a few months ago while I was waitressing... I had some guy tell me that for various reasons I was going to hell that being one of them... the other being that I have tattoos.... If God can forgive the thief on the cross I think he can forgive my tattoos! Thats was all I was saying I never said anything about not believing it occurs!

Depends on what you mean by "speaking in tongues". The Biblical version, and the American Church version are two different things. The only church I went to where they supposedly spoke in tongues, the people where yipping and squawking making strange noises, and they called this speaking in tongues. But this is not what the Bible says tongues is. The Bible describes speaking in tongues as the apostles, speaking to a large group of people, and having the people understand them in their NATIVE language. No one could understand these people in any language. They were simply making noise. Speaking in tongues, would be like you going to an international airport, and preaching the gospel to the people walking by. As the people walk by, a French guy hears it in French, a Chinese guy in Chinese, an African in Swahili, and so on. Meanwhile, you yourself would not know this was happening. Finely the Bible says that speaking in tongues is specifically to spread the gospel. If you are in a church filled with people who already know the gospel, it is unlikely that G-d would give you tongues. Further, if you are alone, there is no reason to give you tongues, because no one would hear it. Another screwy belief is that you need tongues to talk to G-d. G-d is not so limited that he can't understand English or whatever language you naturally speak. And given he created all languages to begin with, why would you need another to talk to him? No where in the Bible does Jesus pray to G-d the father in a different language than he speaks to the disciples. If Jesus, our Earthly model of how to be, did not, why would we need to?

I agree with you Marcia, often people are quick to criticize the gift of speaking in tongues simply due tot he fact that they don't understand it. If people were to read their bible they would find out that God gave this gift to the Apostles and God is not a respecter of persons, what he give to one he can and will give to another. Since I"m not here to argue over God's word I would just like to advise people that the word of God tell us to study to show yourself approved, a workman that studies needn't not be ashamed because he or she can rightly divide the word of truth. In other words, just because one person may not speak in tongues doesn't mean that it's not for someone else. Have a great day all! Happy mylot!

G-d hears you? Are you implying that G-d can't hear you if you don't speak in tongues? I know many G-dly Christians that do not speak in tongues. Every time that Jesus prayed to the father, that is recorded, he spoke in his native language. Jesus didn't need to speak in tongues for G-d to hear him. I have never spoken in tongues. Are you prepared to claim G-d has not heard me? Again, I am not criticizing speaking in tongues. I've heard stories about people who think they might have done so. What I question is the "Cultural American" view of tongues, that is found no where in the Bible.

Nope, never spoke in tongues. Although I have been to a church where most of the congregation did. I must admit that until then I had never heard of it. My own church never had anything like that, so it was a total surprise when I was visiting this church, and until then I didn't understand the concept of what was going on. Different churches have different ways. In our church prayer was always a quiet time, and either the minister led the prayer, or they did the 'moment of silence' for personal prayer. Never thought about it before, but I guess in a way it IS like a different language.

Be careful now. This subject of speaking in tongues is totally misunderstood by so many ignorant Christians. It is not relevant for today, as it was during the days of the Apostles. This practice was for the benefit of unbelievers, not for believers. It was also not the googaly-garb nonsense which you refer to as tongues. You must study the Biblical scriptures; eg. the book of Acts in the Bible and you will realize what it is all about. ( and then you will not try this again) This was practiced by believers of old. The Biblical tongues are foreign languages; Which were spoken in the spirit, when praying, in the spirit. like Greek, Aramaic, or any of the ancient languages that they were speaking at the time, not this babble you refer to; which no one understands; it's a lot of nonsense. Unbelievers of that era used this practice you refer to as tongues, which are not from God's holy spirit, but from the enemy (you know who the Enemy is?)-- the devil. The other foreign languages were for foreigners, or alien citizens, who were present in the Church, and did not understand the language in which the Church were preaching and praying. So, that is a real language; like to-day's German, English, Spanish or French languages.

I know some churches do it, mainly the pentecostal church, but I have never done, nor do I know anyone that does. It is one of the gifts talked about in the bible I know. I always wanted to experience the holy spirit in such a way but it never happened for me. However I do speak two languages in everyday life, english and french, and I was learning a bit of hebrew.

I have never spoke in tongues before. I have been to a church before that had some people in there that spoke like that though. I was not able to understand it and it kind of made me feel out of place. I didn't know what was going on as I had never heard it in my own church before. Soemone that I went with, had to explain it to me.

I never have and I don't believe that God would have someone speaking in a language that no one but a chosen few would understand. I think if He had something to tell ppl that he would make it clear in a way that everyone would understand. A long time ago I went to church with a guy I was dating at the time and his mom. Halfway through the sermon his mom collapsed on the floor, started rolling around and gibbering. I freaked out...I thought she was having some kind of seizure. It turned out that she was speaking in tongues. I never went back to the church and I was really uncomfortable around her after that. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Like most here I thought it was all just emotions and I was raised just like most to believe it was not for today. The reality is that its as much as a a part of worship today as it was back than. After I got saved I thought that was the end for me but one day a woman was speaking in tongues and I understood everything she had said and I knew in my soul that I had to take the next step. It wasn't an easy thing and it was a bit like dying. Since that time my understanding has grown a thousand fold. I would suggest anyone that has questions read the book of acts. god is still the same God as yesterday and he still has the same things to offer us today as he did the disciples back than.

as a believer , we speak in tounge with the help of the holy spirit, it is how your spirit commune with God. So you can speak in tounge as long as the holy spirit leads you. In the day of the pentecost, the spirit of the Lord fill up the place and they utter in different language. We speak in tounge to edify the church. In the church, if anybody speak in tounge let somebody interpret it, according to the bible there should be an interpretation when somebody speak in tounge for the sake of the unbeliever who are present in the church. Thats why you know its the real deal when there is an interpretation of it. And there can only be up to 3 tounge and its done in order because God is God of order.
