Hand washing clothes.... tips?

Yep I know this is an absolute PITA as we are all used to the luxury of our wash machines. However we just got 6in of rain in the past two days and I don't expect the "pond" in my basement to go down for a few days. However, I'd like to be cheap and do it by hand. I was by my MIL's last week and it didn't dawn on me to get her old fashioned scrub board from her. I"ll see them tomorrow but I'd like to get some of it done today if possible. So is there a good method to the madness of washing clothes by hand? Any good tips? It's supposed to be in the 80's so drying isn't an issue. I'm just too cheap + to haul 3 kids + a van full of wash and sit for hours on end in a landrymat listening to them fight, bicker, complain and waste $2/load on a washer 1/3 of the size of mine. *sigh*

I wash clothes by hand sometimes just because I can... if you have grungy clothes to wash, put them in detergent and hot water (I use the bathtub) and let them soak for at least an hour. Then scrub each piece by hand, or, if you're lucky enough to have a clean plunger, use that to agitate them for 10 or 15 minutes. Wring them out and pile them in a basket or something, drain the tub and rinse the soap out of it, then return the clothes and agitate again (I've heard some people say they do this by stomping on them - in their bare feet, of course.) You should rinse them twice for best results. I always rinse in cold water, but I read that when people used to wash clothes by hand they rinsed in hot water to help get rid of soap and to soften the clothes. The hardest part for me is wringing them out, so unless I'm in a hurry, I will wring out what I can, then put them in the tub to sort of drip drain for awhile.

Sounds easy enough via your method. I don't care if they drip dry on the line, it's 90+ out today *LOL*

The only thing about letting them drip dry on the line is that a basket of really we clothes is very heavy!:) Thanks for "best response."

hello there! i always wash our clothes by hand its because i don't have a machine yet and i don't feel it necessary to have one now. its just me and my husband so we only have few dirty clothes... and this is what i do when i wash our clothes by hand... 1. i separate white clothes from colored one 2. wash it with water only to get rid of some dirt 3. soak it in a basin with water and powdered soap and leave it for about 30 mins to so that it will be easier to wash it by hand. 4. then after 30 mins i just scrub it a little, i do not scrub it that much since it is already cleaned during those time that it is soaked in water& powdered soap. and that's it. after that i do the final wash... it don't really takes too much time on me since the 30 mins soak really helps and during that 30 mins i can do other things that need to be done...

Oh washing clothes by hand is one chore I completely detest but you made it sound so funny Anyway if ever I am hand washing, I always soak the clothes in hot water and soap for quite a few hours (overnight, if possible)...the dirt comes out quite easy (I mean you do have to scrub)...and the clothes look quite clean.

With as much as I have to wash I'd have to spend my pay check there to get things caught up.

I used to run water in the bathtub, add a bit of detergent and stomp my clothing clean. I know that sounds crazy but it got the water and soap circulated through all the clothes and I rarely had to scrub anything, they all came out nice and clean! I don't blame you for not wanting to take the family to the laundromat. There's not much worse for a child than having to spend 1-2 hours in a boring place like that and not much worse for a mom than to have to supervise active children in such a place!

Exactly, don't forget you can't really just "leave" to put your clothes in/out of the vehicle you take them with with the way people are today. Even if you are gone for a minute or two you just never know. Plus they usually aren't air conditioned either so that really doesn't help things.

The best way to hand wash your clothes is to soak the cloth in a bucket containing water for 30 Minutes. All the sweat and bad odour in the colthes will go off and then soak it in a detergent mixed water container for 15 to 20 minutes. After this process, brush the clothes and wash it in a pure water and then dry it. I always hand wash my clothes. Handwash is the best. My clothes are always good if it is hand washed.

yeah there's no real easy way around it, though things are improving faster than expected but it still takes forever to do a load so I may as well do by hand.

if you can find an empty laudramat, it can actually take less time to do it than at home, of course, it'll still take at least an hour and a bit, but if you can do all the loads at once... still costs $$, but washing by hand, well, you don't have to have a scrub board, you do have to get into the clothes and I would wait for a machine for heavy things like jeans or large things like sheets.

I wasn't planning on doing any of the heavy stuff by hand. Mainly the kids things as I think we are ok with clothes, but you know how kids slop things up so fast.

i used to get out the scrub board and wash them in the bathtub when i was broke. the only thing i can really suggest is liquid soap for hand wash-the machine type. the powdered stuff never mixes properly for hand use,and you end up with spots.

Other than an occasional addition of borax I don't use powder soap so that shouldn't be a problem.

Back when we first got married and lived in an apartment, I did as much of our laundry by hand as I could. Of course some things end up wrinkly like my husband's work shirt so it was more difficult to do them by hand, there were times though that I would just clean the neck are and the armpit area with out trying to wet the rest of the shirt. You could only do this once per shirt though before you had to wash it in a machine. Washing things like underwear, and bras were pretty perfect for handwashing, and panty hose are actually better hand washed. Jeans are a little difficult and drip like mad, but they can certainly be done. When there are stains you just put a little extra soap on them and rub the stain with another portion of the item of clothing gently. If it didn't come out I would use an old toothbrush with some dish soap on it and brush the stain off as best as I could.
