African Violets are an ideal houseplant. They like the same temperatures as most people are comfortable with, around 20-22 degrees C. They need a lot of shade and no direct sunlight. In fact direct sunlight tends to discolor and shrivel the leaves .. It is very easy to grow and maintain African violets inside one's home. They grow well on shaded window sills and any shaded part of one's garden. I got 2 small plant in a deep pink and the namesake Deep Blusih Violet/purple color.Initially I did all the wrong things like keeping them out where there was sunlight and wet soil.I started noticing that the plants were not doing well and that there were hardly any flowers even after a month .Later, I moved both the plants on to a stand in my balcony and repotted what was left of the plants. This time I used a mix of Sand and mulch mainly consisting of powdered dry leaves and wood chippings and bark and very little potting soil and watered the plants speringly...Within a month of this the plants started growing extremely well and began multiplying and flowering. The flowers were large and plentiful. It was such a heartening and happy feeling .. Friends do you like this lovely flower? please add more information about African Violets ..

Hi Kiran! I have not heard about this plant. Does it have any Indian name (common name). Your description tells that it is good indoor plant. I love plants and flower and I have a small terrace garden and I plant indoor plants in every nook and corner of my home to get some oxygen and look of green colour. Green colour looks very soothing to me. Now a days weather is extremely hot and it requires lots and lots of efforts to look after the plants, which get direct sun light.

hi depak, it is called African violet even in India. It is available in most nurseries and it is very easy to multiply it through little plants that grow on the sides or through a single leaf, the flowers are very colorful and beautiful. they are very good indoor plants, you really must try growing them since you are interested in plants...I have written a review about it on hubpages where I have given all the details...

Hi Kiran you are such a loving gardener and the flowers and plants would adore you.I too wish to have some indoor plants at home , at least on my window sill but I just don't know where to go and buy them in this place. There is one big nursery like place right on the side of the road where a huge collection of pots and flowers and crotons are sold. But I heard that they were not good. Plants need to be bought in a proper nursery and earlier I had bought them and planted them in my house at Trichy. In fact, I planted a hybrid guava tree also there that yielded amazing fruit within 3 years. I have written an article too in AC on that 'My garden and guava trees.'. I don't know if you have read it. But there there is no scope for thAT. however, we live in a compound that has trees and that is a big boon. I marked a positive for your photograph. Keep up the good work and do not give your precious plants to undeserving neighbours.. I donot know anything about African violets and have gone on to other stories.

Hi kala, Thank you so much for that lovely post and warm words Kala, it is very easy to find African violets in a nursery and a window sill is ideal for it to grow. You just have to see that there is no direct sunlight falling on it.It is nice to hear about the Guava tree, that's one of my favorite fruits. In mangalore we have 2 trees , one a hybrid variety and the other one is a local variety with lots of seeds but very tasty...I will look up your article in AC,,,Have a great day

Hi Kiran, I really appreciate your hobby of gardening. I also enjoyed gardening much when I was in my native place. I had spent much time for gardening and I loved to do it. But after relocating to Delhi it is not possible to spend time for gardening especially we are living in a rented home. Earlier our house was good for gardening and we had some plants too. Now the present house is not good for plants. We can keep the same in balcony but it is too small and in day time nobody is there and anybody can take away the pots (we already lost pots, we are in ground floor). So now I decided to think about plants after owing a house only. I have seen the plants, really beatiful.

Hi Sreekala, thanks a lot for your response . Yes I agree ! to have a proper garden you need to have some space that you can call your own and some privacy. I hope you wish gets fulfilled and you are able to have a nice little garden of your own - all the best
