I used to have a great job, customer support manager for a telecommunications company, until they just decided to get rid of me. That was 18 months ago, I was advised to take them to court for unfair dismissal and the case came to court last September (2008). I won, but my ex employer refused to pay the compensation, so I had to appeal. Im still waiting for the court case and have had no income for 16 months. My only way to survive right now is to get free handouts from the "desperate people centre" which is only rice, pasta and dried milk. So now I pick oranges for 12 hours a day, get lacerated by the trees (I have scars all over my arms,) filthy from the dew, sprays and dust and get paid $24 a day. Would you get cut up to stay alive?

I would if it was the only job that I could find. It is important to have employment and with the economy the way it is, I would take whatever job I could find. I think that it is neccessary to work and make a living for yourself. I think that we should do anything that we can to make money for ourselves. We have to help ourselves!

yup...probably would if it meant paying my rent...putting food on the table. Still, I'd be looking all the while for a job that I liked better. Good luck Ritz. Hope you find something more to your liking really soon!

Oh Ritz, Im glad to know that you won but Im hoping and praying that you do get that compensation you are asking for. Get cut up because of working too hard just to survive, sure I would do that. Survival in this world is everything after all. We just have to do what we got to do. Do take care always.

[b]Well, yes. I know because I've been in situations where I had to take even worse jobs just to scrape by 'til I could find better. I sympathize with you, but it's honest work, though hard. I've done many rough jobs, & survived. Look at it this way: When you get back up again to where you're more comfortable, this will make an interesting chapter to tell your kids, when they whine about doing chores.... Hi Ritz, So sorry to hear that, can you not get benefits of some sort like jobseekers' allowence like they have here in the uk? I can't believe you don't get some sort of money to live on? what sort of country is that, one day when you have enough money just get out of that country and come home. I wish you all the best, no one should have to do what you are doing for just $24 a day and getting cuts as well, I hope the money come through for you soon. Tamara

I'm sorry that you have to go through so much for such a wage. I live in south central Florida and I see the people picking oranges in the groves around here. It's hard work and I do feel for you. I hope you get the money you deserve soon and that a better job comes along.

Oh Dear, but you still be thankful that you have something to eat and live. Your ex-employer owes you alot now. S/He should pay you. Well im little bit lucky that my hubby still got a work even he got 10% cut off. But atleast we have something to eat and roof over our heads. We can hardly pay bills. Oneday if we work hard we will have a good life.Just stay possitive.
