Swimming Races

I was looking at fun somewhat short runs to go on, and I found that they also have swimming races out here. Anyone ever done one of those? Most in this area seem to be 1/2 mile on the beach. So I calculated out how many laps that would be in our home pool. Turns out it is 134 laps. So I'm thinking it sounds possible. I tried to swim that much, but I only got to 34 laps. And in the ocean you've got waves fighting you too. So much for that! But maybe better swimmers than me wouldn't have a problem with it. Some of those beach races looked fun. A few involved swimming 1/2 mile and then running 3 miles. Sounded pretty awesome. Too bad I'm so out of shape!

my sister used to swim competatively, but only in pools, no ocean around Central Texas....

I totally forgot about those types of swimming races. I can tell you right now I'd never be able to do those. My swimming isn't fast enough and my form is horrible. With running I'm trying my hardest to make sure I don't develop any bad habits. But in swimming I guess I've already got the bad habits too ingrained.

I'm actually worst at free style. I can do some of the other styles somewhat well. But probably nothing well enough to swim competitively.

Her own strokes left something to be desired, but she still won races. She had a terrible kick in the Butterfly, but would win anyway

It sounds like you are working toward getting into shape, though. I think I would not last for the swimming it is so exhausting. Swimming in "wild" water, like lakes and oceans has more fitness benefits because of the waves and the wind. I can see where doing some of both would be the perfect balance of upper and lower body work.

Yes, I am definitely working hard to eventually be in shape. I think I'm too afraid to swim in "wild" water after parasitology class. But maybe someday I'll swim in the ocean again. I get exhausted swimming too. I can walk or hike forever, but running and swimming are killing me! But I guess that at least I'm burning way more calories than I would be just hiking.
