Why Is Yahoo Geocities Closing?

Canada

My husband has had a website on Yahoo Geocities for years, and now he is going to need to re-located it somewhere else. He's worked very hard on that website, and everyone who knows him knows his site. He is good at what he does, and it won't be as much work for him as it could be for others, but it's still going to be inconvenient just the same. Anyone else having a problem with Geocoties closing? Anyone else know why they are getting rid of that particular service?

I think I've heard about that awhile back but am not sure why they are closing. I guess it's like hometown with aol, they closed down. I didn't even know about that until I was looking for crochet patterns, they'd been closed for maybe a year before I even knew. Well I hope the transition is swift and easy. Maybe he should back it up somehow, start putting the codes in documents so as to be able to swiftly get the site up and running again. Sorry he's gotta do that though.

I never heard of Geocities closing. I can still get on my site and it is the first one that I have used. So I did check and find out that it indeed is closing. I do have a blog and a couple of other sites, so I will have to change the information on to the other sites. It will be hard though because Geocities was a general and the others were specialized. The trouble is the time.

Not really sure why either, but when i got my new laptop a few months back I went to try and make a website and for some reason it don't work with Vista.. All it did was give me errors.. Could be a reason why I am not exactly sure.. But the service i do was great gave us nice webpages we could build.. maybe they will come up with something a bit better, who knows yahoo seems to come up with many other things...

Wow, I didn't even realize it was closing. I have a Geocities website too. But I don't really care too much about mine, I haven't really kept it maintained lately since I was too busy with school. I guess there are too many website services out there already and Yahoo doesn't see a benefit to themselves for having one.

they probably just want to move into something else. i'm sure all the free sites take up quite a bit of server space for them. i know a few people having to convert their sites elsewhere,it's damn inconvieniant for them.

I know that Yahoo is cutting a bunch of jobs so those who are in charge of maintaining Geocities might be part of the group that's getting ousted.

Until a few months ago I wasn't even aware that Geocities still in business! (and so is Friendster, though I don't know anyone who still uses it). I think Yahoo is trying to consolidate and get rid of businesses they consider marginal or unprofitable. Geocities was one of the first build-your-own-Website platforms that I remember hearing about... but that was more than 10 years ago. Since then, there have been many other Web site options and platforms that have come along, as well as tools that make it easier for people to build their own Websites from scratch without any programming experience. And then along came the whole blogging phenomenon, which made it even easier for people to share content online. I hope your husband is able to move his Web site to another provider without too much trouble... sounds like he's really put a lot of work and time into it.

I have heard of Geocities but have not done much with them at all. I am not sure why they are closing down either. I hope your husband can prosper some place else though. Good luck to him.

That's a bad news. I remember Geocities provided the free space long time ago. Perhaps I also applied one for myself. But later I preferred to spend money to set up my own homepage. Perhaps the bad economy has an effect on Yahoo. So it has to cut down the budget and cancel this service. I love China
