What do you think of vegetarians?

I am a vegetarian and I always try to respect the feelings and eating habits of people who do eat meat. Yet as a vegetarian I do find that people sometimes like to challenge me about why I do not eat meat and sometimes they get quite verbally aggressive. I just do not understand why....?

I am also a vegetarian UK_Shree. I agree with what you said about some people not respecting our choice and tend to question why we do not eat meat. Personally, I think it is because they are usually the same people who question everybody who is different from the norm or themselves. Some people might feel it is more difficult for them if they have to cook for us, etc. I was a vegetarian for a few years way back when I was in college but I stopped mainly because back then it was much more difficult to find food in restaurants that accommodated my eating style. There wasn't as many choices like there are today. I just started not eating meat again this past January and am happy that I did because I have never liked eating animals. If humans can survive and live without difficulty by not eating other animals than I do not see why we should. I find it barbaric in a way. Jill

Thanks for your response Jill. I am pleased to hear that you have been able to go back to a diet that you feel more comfortable with. And I think you are right about people questioning us because we may be doing something a little differently to them.

People like to make others feel bad because they are different. I eat meet but I don't look at vegetarians any differently than I look at other people. Some people will challenge you and some people will not. Just try your best to ignore it.

Thanks for the advice. You are probably right as ignoring is probably the best solution. Also, welcome to myLot, as I see you are a new member!

i don't have any prejudice towards vegetarians and i respect their decisions as well... i never try to question them why they are vegetarians and so on because i think it is a bit rude to do that... they never asked me why i eat meat so i don't have the right to ask them why they eat veggies only... it is individuals decisions and i believe there are reasons behind that... take care and have a nice day...

I admire vegetarians. I used to think they were loopy but with more and more evidence showing that eating all the meat we do is so detrimental to our health, I now think they are the smart ones. I have considered not eating meat because I don't like the inhumane ways they treat the animals. My Grandpa raised Hereford cows and he would butcher a steer for the family every fall but his cattle had lots of space to graze and when they were in the barn it was clean and roomy. He had happy livestock. Today, animals live in factory-type housing and aren't allowed to live natural lives, injected with hormones and other poisons to make them more profitable. Geez, I'm making myself sick just writing about this! I eat more vegetables and legumes now and not much meat. I'm not a vegetarian but I'm leaning that way. Are you vegetarian because of animal rights, health reasons or both?

people just love their meet and cant understand why vegetarians do what they do. It seems to me that its basically a difference of belief system in some cases that cause the problem. I went on a vegan diet one time to help lose weight and i had so many people tell me that i was wrong, that im going to make myself sick and such....i had a few people pull the bible card on me as well. and i had to tell them that i was doing it to lose weight...not for some philosophical reason. so i understand some of what your saying

To me it seems like self-deprivation.... to not eat meat that is. That is one of the biggest reasons why I don't understand it. Of course I don't deprive myself in other ways either regularly because if I did, I'd be in a piss poor mood all the time and all of my friends would decide they wanted nothing to do with me any more. I don't support self deprivation as a good pathway to losing your friends, btw, although as you see it would certainly work well!

Hi Palmerhusky, I know what you mean. And anyway what actually gives one person thr right to tell another person what they should eat?

I wonder if it isn't because they might feel guilty themselves for not eating better themselves. I love vegetables an all but I do feel that vegetarians do not get all the nurtrients that they actually need. It is a good diet but they need other things in it for it to really be good for them. I certainly wouldn't get verbally aggressive with someone over it though.

I do agree that as a vegetarian I do need to make sure I get all my essentials. But it is possible without eating meat. Nice to know you wouldn't try to enforce your views on anyone.

I have some vegeian friends and it's fine with me. One night we all went out to eat and the girl that was a vegearian ended up sitting beside a steak and a lamb chop. She was only joking about it, but we did move the seats around a bit and she was happier.

I do not feel that great when I am sitting right next to meat either, but then again I do not mind sitting down to a meal with someone who is consuming it. I think the main thing here is not shove it in anyone's face and just to be respectful of everyone's choices.

i think to each his own. if that is what you want to do then that is your business and i would never challenge you on it. as i would not want someone to challenge me on what i eat or do not eat. i think being a vegetarian is a good thing but it is not something i can do as i like meat and need my protein. i did try to be a vegetarian for about 2 weeks but i just could not stick to it.

That's fair enough and I can understand your opinion on this. The main thing is to respect other people's decisions.

I don't think that is anybody's buisness but yours. It's a choire u made for your vety own reasons & people should respect that. Tell them to mind their own buisnes.

I don't understand the issue some people seem to have with vegetarians either. I'm not really 'officially' one myself (though I have noticed I have moved in that direction a lot in recent times). I do respect the eating habits of everyone whether they are just vegetarians or they eat meat as well. I wish certain people would respect that too.

I know what you mean. With some people it's almost like they have something against me upon realising that I do not eat mean. Sometimes I am even mocked for it. It's just so disrespectful.

I totally agree. Not only can vegetarians help stop the animal suffering, but they help the environment too. Meat is almost equal to mass consumption. Think of all the food these animals (have to) consume... I get sick just thinking about it.

Like you i do not understand why people do that to you. We eat a lot of different vegetables, but on occasion we do it meat. but it is not a everyday thing. My sister in law and her husband come over for dinner sometimes, and he is a meat and potato type and he just cant believe that you can make a meal with out having meat in it. and i can say that i have surprised him more than once having a meal with out meat in it.

I am a vegetarian, and have been for many years. I was brought up next to a farm and made friends with the animals. When I was old enough to understand that they were being grown to be eaten I just coudn't bear the thought of it! I've met with a lot of animosity from people about being vegetarian. Some seem to think that I'm trying to convert them, which I would never think of doing, and others just get offended. It is definitely more acceptable than it used to be as people are realising the health benefits. I do find it difficult to understand the agressive attitude that some people have, but put it down to either ignorance, stupidity or even - dare I say it - guilt!

I think you're right and it's probably a combination of all of those things. It's a personal choice, and as long as you never try to force your views or habits on anyone else then why should it bother them.

To be honest, how one can go by without eating meat is beyond me but I will never criticize anybody who chooses to be a vegetarian. So they are some people whose primary purpose in life is to criticize and judge others. Ignore such people and don't pay attention to them.. I tried being a vegetarian. I took the 30 day no meat challenge.. I never made past day 2!..

i have a great respect for vegetarians for the mastery of eating healthy and for the discipline that comes with the eating habit. especially after watching a video about colon cleansing and colon cancer, i found out how nice vegetarians' colon look like. i'm also trying to eat healthy by having more vegies and less on meat. but i still have to work on the discipline and determination thing. hehe for other people who can't understand your eating lifestyle, just ignore and don't mind them. perhaps too much carbs and sugars make them more verbally aggressive.

Lol, yes I wonder if that's what it might be that causes them to behave that way! I didn't actually know about the colon thing, but it's very interesting so thanks for sharing!

I am not a vegetarian, but I really respect to the vegetarians. Because I think they are very kind and avoid eating animals. It's not easy to do in my opinion. As the meats are attractive for me. Although I eat more vegetables than meats in usual, but I will feel bored if I eat vegetables only. I love China

I am respectful of the lifestyle. I have even attempted some veggie meals. I don't know why some people are challenged by vegetarians. Unfortunately, I think it may be part of some human nature to attack what is viewed as different. A real shame when you think about it.

I don't get it either. I never understood why "to eat meat or not eat meat" because such a hot ticket like capital punishment or something. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't like beef or fish. Chicken and turkey are the meats I use, but I have no problem eating a salad with olives and a side of beets. I can only assume that people just need to pick. It has to be in their disposition or something. Like if they make fun of a person or argue with them they are coming out on top. What I don't know, but it must do something for them.

Same with you,i also respect all people's eating habit.I think it is not a problem to be a vegetarian and it is also a good habit. We can always health from meat that sometimes have more problem to human body.We can take vitamin or other nutrien medicine if we not eat meat.Maybe the people who like to chalengge you are the type hard to understand.Don't care about them.I believe they will awake from their bad attitude.Have a nice day.
